It used to work, but then...

Visual Studio 2005 was hummin' and I had a number of BI projects in both Report Services and Analysis Services. I wanted to add source control and decided to install the Team Suite and I did something wrong. I just don't know what it was.

In the end, I deinstalled every Visual Studio 2005 (including, of course, the Team stuff)and SQL Server 2005 application, and reinstalled old faithful Visual Studio 2005, but nothing has worked. I'm missing the Business Intelligence project templates completely and I'm guessing that if I had them, I wouldn't get either of the following 2 messages when I try to open existing projects:

"The project application for 'c:\...\SOS.dwproj' is not installed. Make sure the application for the project type (dwproj) is installed."

"The project application for 'c:\...\SOS.rptproj' is not installed. Make sure the application for the project type (rptproj) is installed."

Anyone got any ideas

Hi Peter,

In your listed instructions, I didn't see that you reinstalled SQL. If you don't want the server, just install the client tools. I think that will get your project types back.

Thanks,

Brad

Peter,

Have you resolved your issue I am having the same problem. I had upgraded to SQL 2005. I am still using Visual Studio 2003 for the CRM reporting Services. Once I installed SQL 2005 that's when everything went haywire. I saw a response to reinstall the client tools but not sure if they were referring to SQL 2005 Client tool s or what not. I have tried both reinstalling VS 2003 and SQL 2005. Still having the same issues.

Anyone else got any ideas Thanks.

Yes, I did, Allen, but you won't like the way I did it: complete rebuild of my PC. I wish I could offer you something more, but I had to give up.

Can anyone shed some more light on this problem please

The issues with the installation types of SQL Server & Client tools are beyond a joke. It leads me to think that the testing of this was so inadequate that MS needs to investigate just how it could be released with these types of problems.

SQLServer 2005 and the client tools work beutifully, Analysis Server is brilliant, but it really doesnt help that the installation procedure is so bad, that you are holding your breath everytime you go to put it on a dev machine.

Telling people to reinstall their box, or unistall/reinstall VS is not an appropriate solution as most people just dont have a day to waste.

What is the MSI that needs to run in order to get this solution type MS

Cheers

After dealing with numerous installation issues like management studio not beign installed and then trying to install Client tools and getting rediculous errors, I found the MSI that sorted it all out for me.

In Enterprise edition, go to your DVD directory and find the following:

\ENGLISH\SQL2005\ENTERPRISE\32BIT\Tools\Setup\SqlRun_Tools.msi

When you run this, you will be able to force the installation of all the client tools which will put Management Studio in, as well as add the project types for Visual Studio.

I hope this helps someone....

You can simply open up the .rptproj file using VS 2005. You then have to convert each .rdl file and you should be all set. The problem lies with trying to open a VS 2003 solution file (.sln) that contains .rptproj files.

Trying to open a VS2003 solution was not the case with the error I got as none of the projects we have created have ever been written in anything but 2005...

I have had no problems since employing the solution that I gave in the previous posts..

I am getting this error message in Visual Studio 2003 when I try to open my Reporting Services projects there.

I have Visual Studio 2005 installed, and I had the install of SQL 2005 [express ] that came with it. I tried removing SQL 2005 entirely and that has not helped.

My thinking was that I would be able to work on RS 2000 projects in VS 2003 and RS 2005 projects in VS 2005. Is it possilbe that what I need to do is install all options for BOTH versions of VS and SQL on my development PC

This is nuts. This forum discussion is one of the very few posts I have found on the issue. If anyone knows a knowledge base article or some other resource, I would very much appreciate it.

As luck would have it, I spoke to a colleague of mine who has a similar collection of tools installed on his PC and he suggested a simple approach to troubleshooting: look up .rptproj in the registry and see whether or not it is properly associated.

In my registry, in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT I found a key for .rptproj with one value (default) associated with it that had the following REG_SZ data:

SQLServer.ReportingServices.Designer.ProjectFile.

I then searched for this data, which also has its own key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. If found it and discovered that it has several subkeys, but the important one is shell\Open\Command.

On my pc, the default value for the Command key had the following data:

"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\Common7\IDE\DevEnv.exe" "%1"

On my colleague's PC (where he had no problem opening .rptproj files), the data was only:

"DevEnv.exe" "%1"

This seemed odd because the DevEnv.exe is not included in the PATH on either of our PCs.

I don't know how I got a fully qualified pathname instead of just the executable name. I have VS 2005, MSDN Library for August 2006 and JetBrains ReSharper on my PC as well. Maybe it was SQL 2005, maybe it wasn't. (My friend does not have ReSharper, and I have previously had trouble with ReSharper and Reporting Services, so that's one possibility. But I'll have to follow up with JetBrains to be sure.)

In any case, changing the data to just use the exe name rather than the fully qualified name immediately fixed the problem for me, and it was much easier than re-installing everything (which I had tried prior to this bit of dumb luck).

If anyone has a clue as to why this might work, I would like to hear the explanation.

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of trying to repair the installation of VS 2005 that I hosed when trying to troubleshoot this problem. And I am now back where I started.

I have completely removed VS 2005 and SQL 2005, completely re-installed RS, including SP 2 and I am still dead in the water.

Is there anything short of rebuilding my entire PC that will work Someone at Microsoft surely must understand what registry keys need to be repaired. Any chance of a posting a fix here

OK, I have tried re-installing the SQL Client Tools, I have tried Re-installing RS and then RS-SP2, I have chekced my registry entry and it is "DevEnv.exe %1"

None have worked.

I originally have VS2003 installed , it shows the SQL Server Report Designer as an installed product and I am able to open the report projects fine.

I then installed VS2005, it does NOT show the SQL Server Report Designer, If I try to open a report project it prompts for the convert, Which does complete sucessfully, only there are no files in the solution. When I try to open the Project file I get the error.

Re-installing the entire machine is NOT an option (Thats a very poor solution to boot).

Anyone else

I have found a couple of other workarounds that seemed to work as well.

In the registry, under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.rptproj I set the data for the default value to the path of the devenv.exe and was able to open .rptproj files just by clicking them.

Because associating the file extension with the exe seemed to work, it made me think the issue was something internal with VS 2003.

So I ran the repair / reinstall for VS 2003 (takes forever) and still seemed to have the same problem, but the data for the default value of the command key I mentioned above had been changed back to the fully qualified path. I tried changing it back to DevEnv.exe without the path and I had the problem again, so I changed it back. After that I was at least able to create a new blank solution and add a reporting services project to it.

At this point, I'm going to stop messing with it. Obviously something is not right, but I am able to work with existing files and create new ones. I just don't have VS 2005 on my PC for the moment, and I'm not sure if / when I'll try to put it back.

Hi everyone,

I faced the same exact message and problem as described above. The only change that I had since last using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 was that uninstalling the .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package. I reinstalled that and everything returned back to normal.

I suggest to anyone facing the same problem having a look at this approach as well.

Regards,

Panos

I have just installed SQL 2000 Reporting Services Developer Edition but can't open rptproj files and also get the error "Strong Name validation failed for assembly 'Microsoft.ReportingServices.Designer.dll'" when I try to create a new project.
I have VS 2003 and 2005 installed, and SQL Server 2000.
I have tried editing the path name for the "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\Common7\IDE\DevEnv.exe" "%1" in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT for the key .rptproj, but this doesn't make any difference.
Also there is no key for rptproj in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.rptproj.

Could anyone suggest how I can fix this

Thank you in advance
