I need to setup a project team with an architect and 4 developers.

We plan to use Microsoft .NET 2005 Team System. The following is the things I am going buy:

1 copy of Team Foundation Server

1 copy of Team edition for Architect with Premium MSDN subscription

3 copies of Team edition for developers with Premium MSDN subscriptions.

I found that Team edtions are not available without Premium MSDN subscriptions. Why is it so

What should I actually buy Please advice.

Microsoft, please answer my question.

THanks

Yes you are right about what you need to buy - which is the following :

1 copy of Team Foundation Server.

1 copy of Team edition for Architect

3 copies of Team edition for Developers

At retail all Team System products come with MSDN Premium subscriptions only.

Yes - All Team Editions come bundled with MSDN Premium exclusively. Why Because that's the way MS marketing decided to structure their product line. Seriously though, in the VS 2003 era, nearly everyone bought MSDN Enterprise edition because it was nearly the same price as VS 2003 Enterprise, but included all the other MSDN stuff in addition to VS. They just institutionalized what the market wa already doing by only offering the top-tier versions of VS bundled with MSDN.

Your list looks fine, except that for only 5 users you don't actually need to buy a copy of Team Foundation Server - the Workgroup Edition of TFS, which is included with every Team Edition of Visual Studio, will meet your needs (it supports up to 5 users).

One other thing - make sure that the Architect Edition really meets your needs. It's by far the most narrowly focused of the Team Edition versions and unless you're architecting a distributed enterprise application, it may well not be the best choice.

I'm in a similar situation where I have 5 - 10 developers, so i understand that i need Team Foundation Server, as well as Visual Studio for each developer.

Correct me if i'm wrong but would my shopping list be:
- 1 x Team Foundation Server (~2800 USD)
- 5-10x Visual Studio Team Edition for Software Developers w/MSDN premium (~2800)

--------------------------------------
total: 16,800 - 30,800

Correct

Also, correct me if i'm wrong but in a previous position we only had 1 MSDN subscription that we all used, so we had up to 10 developers using the same install of VS.NET 2003. Were we legal in using it this way Do the Team Server CALs prevent this type of use now

thank you,
KF

Your shopping list looks to be correct.

Your previous usage of a single MSDN copy for 10 developers was probably not permitted. MSDN is licensed to individuals. I have heard of such a thing as a license-only MSDN subscription, wherein a single set of media was used by multiple subscribers, but you still need to have one subscription per developer.
