Whether you use sharepoint or vesion control largely depends on your users. If the users are more comfortable with dealing with office docs (Word, Excel, etc.) from a web interface, sharepoint is the way to go. If you are dealing with devs writing code who are used to working in VS, version control is definitely the way to go.
Sharepoint and version control both use SQL server databases, but they don't use the same database (in other words, they don't share schemas, etc.).
