PostPosted: Team Foundation Server - General, Backup Utility not working after TFS installed on Windows Server 2003 Std Edition SP1 Top

I have installed Team Foundation Server (single-server deployment) and Team Foundation client, on a Windows Server 2003 Std Edition with SP1 with all windows updates. Installation was successful, I can create projects etc no problem.

This was a clean install on a DELL Poweredge 800 with RAID 1 SATA HDD.

Prior to installing Team Foundation Server and Client I was able to use the Windows backup utility to successfully create an ASR backup and full backup of the server.

After installinf TFS I find the backup utility fails with the following error:

Error returned while the creating volume shadow copy: 80042301

After looking further into this, it appears that the volume shadow copy service was not started, nor could it be manually started. All other means to start the service failed. It seems to be stopping the backup utility from working.

Is this a bug with TFS   If so can you point to a link that explains in detail the steps needed to manually backup a TFS.

I am guessing that this problem has something to do with SQL 2005 (because the rest of Team Foundation has nothing to do with Volume shadow copy services).  I have asked a SQL person to look at this and reply.

There is a bug in SQL Server 2005 setup that causes incorrect value to be inserted in the following registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\VssAccessControl

The workaround to fixing this problem is to delete the VssAccessControl key.
Then you should be able to start the VSS service.

This issue has been fixed in the May CTP of SQL Server 2005 and this workaround would not be needed for new installations of SQL Server 2005 May CTP (or later) as they do not create this registry key.

Note: Once you have this problem, you'll have to manually delete the key. Upgrade to a newer version of SQL Server or uninstall/install would not remove this registry key automatically and the problem will persist.

Hope that helps.

Thanks

Thanks Vishal...

I deleted the Key you mentioned above and noted the Volume Shadow Copy service can now start. However, I am now getting the following error log when trying to backup:

Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "BackupASR-11-05-2005.bkf created 5/12/2005 at 2:53 PM"

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
"MSDEWriter" has reported an error 0x800423f4. This is part of System State. The backup cannot continue.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:800423f4
Aborting Backup.

The operation did not successfully complete.

What now

Can you please check the event log and see if you find any error messages there

There are a number of errors messages, can I email the event logs to you or drop them somewhere

Also, after I deleted the key, the BIS service failed - I then restored the key, BIS is now fine.

This is probably related: http://support.microsoft.com/ id=828481

------

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

? You back up data from a volume that contains a Microsoft SQL Server database.
? The recovery model of the SQL Server database is configured to use an option that is different from Simple.

Note This problem occurs even when you do not back up any SQL Server database information.

Actually I do have the latest CTP of SQL Server 2005 and I had the exact same problem.  Did a System State backup before rolling SQL 2K5 and tried one after and it bombed giving me a VSS error.  I looked for the VssAccessControl key entry and it wasn't there.

So the issue has not been fixed, the "resolution" to the previous problem had been fixed (removing the VssAccessControl key no longer exists).  The issue is still there that one cannot run NTBackup to do a state backup after SQL2K5 is installed.

So that didn't help, I wish it did.  :(

Please follow the following instructions to fix the key:
Check the following registry key: "HKLM\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\VssAccessControl".  If it exists, and if there exists a value named "(Default)" with type "REG_DWORD", please do one of the following: 1) If this is the only value, delete the key "HKLM\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\VssAccessControl"; or 2) If there are other values besides "(Default)", then right click on "(Default)" and choose "delete".  With the above workaround, VSS service should start fine.

This should make sure that deleting the key does not cause any problems to other writers.

If you still see any problems, please respond with error entries from the event log

Jeff,
This is not a known issue. Please respond with entries from event log to help investigate this further.

thanks

Hello! I have exactly the same problems and errors on a WindowsServer2003-SmallBusinessEdition (SBS premium) AFTER installing SP4 for SQL-Server2000. I have 3 instances of the sql-server: local, Sharepoint and SBS-Monitoring!

Dear Vishal!

I solved the problem as followed:
My machine is a w2k3-Server SmallBusinessEdition PREMIUM; dualXEON 3GHz, 4GB RAM, I was allready using SP1 for Windows, all Servicepacks for Exchange, Sharepoint etc. etc. I would say: the machine was completly up-to-date. Everything inlcuding the daily Backup with ntbackup was running perfect day by day.

Then I installed the SP4 for SQL-Server2000 for 2 of my 3 SQL-Server-instances.
Then NTBACKUP ended up with the Volumenshadowcopy-Error mentioned on top of this thread.

Then, I intalled the ServicePacks for Exchange, sharepoint etc. again but the error was still there.

Then I installed the ServicePack1 for Windows2003 AGAIN (SP1-for-w2k3-SBS in this case) AND: THE ERROR IS GONE AND THE BACKUP RUNS PERFECT AGAIN!!!!!

Maybe this helps a little bit!

Bastian

Though I recieved the same error message as you all I may have been dealing with a different problem. I had set up Active Directory after I installed SQL Server and I think there was a conflict with permissions as the SQL Service was still running using the local administrative account. I switched it to the localsytem account to see if that was the problem and my backup is now chugging away. Thought I'd just let everyone know.

Im on W2k3 SBS Std SP1 (with every other update going!) and I had changed my SQL Service (a custom install of an MSDE instance) to another account as well (so I could do some stuff in Enterprise Manager) and the backup started complaining - switched it back to local system account and its behaving again!
