Removing old versions

I have a need to remove old versions from version control. Now, I realize that _versions_ don't really exist in a physical sense. But, the following describes the problem;

  • In our case, TFS Version Control is being used to manage some large, binary files (ZIPs, PLC files, Ghost images). The goal is to consolidate all version control onto one platform, and TFS is being considered.
  • My understanding is that the size of these files (upwards of 3Gbs) will preclude them from going through reverse deltification. This means that each change is a full copy. However, disk space is not considered the primary problem.
  • Data retention policies require that the company retain these files for a specific period of time, e.g. 2 years of changes, no more and no less, and both time boundaries for legal reasons. So, ideally for this example, a setting that would allow revisions older than two years to be deleted/removed would do the trick.

We will obviously not be in a position to need this capability right away. It is a question being asked by the compliance department. I understand why this might not be a current feature. But, is there a way in which to do this manually

While we can't guarantee any particular feature in any given release, destroying files is very high on the list of features for future releases. There's no way to do it with v1.
