PostPosted: Team Foundation Server - Setup, 503 Service Unavailable Top

Guys,

I'm having some problems with our TFS install. It was working fine until a couple of days ago when the SQL DB started getting transaction log is full errors on workitemtracking db. Most things were still working but yesterday when I tried creating a new Team Project I got the same error and it also said TFS could not rollback. So the project did get created since I checked in the DB tables. Well the problem was found to be that SQL server did not have any disk space. So our server team gave a few more gigs and we were told to try again.

Now when I try to reconnect to the TFS server it works fine. I'm able to see projects with WorkItems nodes and all the work items inside it, Documents node and items inside it, Reports node and report items inside it show up alright.

  1. 'Team Builds' only shows All build types item not the build items I had before the diskspace problems.
  2. "Source control" shows but when I try to retrieve source code I get errors [Team foundation Server "servername" does nto exist or is not accessible at this time] Technical information (for adminestrator) "HTTP code 503: Service Unavailable"
  3. Even "New Build" action returns the same error. Although, all other nodes work fine. I can create new work items etc.

Please someone give me a clue what is going on. The event logs on TFS server report same error i.e. 503 service....

SQL server reports a number of Login failed for user 'DEVELOPMENT\TFSSERVICE'. [CLIENT: client IP "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"] errors

The TFSService account also features on the security logs with a number of failures.

Cheers

Yogesh

Has the password change for the TFSService account recently   Have you tried to connect to SQL Server by logging in as TFSService and running Management Studio   Are there any other errors or warnings on the TFS Server besides the 503 errors

TFSService is a service account and we generally don't expire these passwords. So I don't think the password was changed recently.

I can't connect to SQL server using the TFSService account since I don't have the password. Only server team has it, though I've asked them for the password.

Have you resolved the transaction log full issue If a database's transaction log becomes full, it will be read-only until the transaction log is cleared. You can clear out the transaction log by executing a transaction log backup and selecting the "Truncate the transaction log" option in the "Back Up Database" dialog from SQL Server Management Studio. You should immediately do a full backup on the database after completing the backup.

I will try that and return with the results. Thanks for your suggestions.

I had this problem and it turned out the 503 response was coming from our proxy server. I removed the proxy settings and the 503 errors went away.

Proxy settings where on the tfs server

I'm still getting the same error log messages, although I am now able to see the rest of the folders like Builds, documents and reports.

When browsing to http://tfsserver:8080/Warehouse/v1.0/WarehouseController.asmx
I don't see a thing in the browser window.

Proxy settings are on the client under IE --> Tools --> Internet Options... --> Connections --> Lan Settings.

Many times if you are on intranet, you will want to bypass the proxy (but that isn't always the case).

You should have seen something when browsing that webpage.

if you are unable to browse and see anything, make sure you can see it on the AT (log onto AT, and type http://localhost/services/v1.0/registration.asmx). You may want to try other web pages (open inetmgr and browse a few ASMX pages from the Team Foundation site). If those do not work, they should give you a better error than the standard 503.

If you can see them, try to type in the machine name instead of localhost while you are still on the AT. That should also work. If that isn't, it could be a number of issues, but should give you some sort of error.

If that works, try making sure that the firewall/ports settings are open on the app tier.

Thanks for the clarification. That was not the case though. I had IE proxy settings removed before this issue hit me.

The problem was related to SQL Server service account not having logon rights to the server. Once I gave these rights the error dissappeared. Warehouse started working too.

Has the password change for the TFSService account recently

Could you please elaborate on what effect changing the password has I was forced to change the password of the tfsservice account, and was able to do so "live" with no problems. However, I applied the july security patches, rebooted, and how I am getting the "service unavailable" errors.

I updated the 4 services that logon using the service account, but that has not helped yet.

I figured it out, unless someone can point out a better way to handle this scenario. I had to manually update the credentials for the following services:

TFSServerScheduler, Sharepoint Timer Service, TeamBuild Service and Code Coverage Analysis Service

Then I also needed to update the credentials used by the following IIS applications:

TFS AppPool, TFSWSS and TFSWSSADMIN

Making those changes seems to have brought my system back to life. Is there an easier way to handle a password change for the TFS Service account

You can use the TFSAdminUtil ChangePassword feature described here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms252453.aspx
