Exchange Servers Admin >> Exchange 5.5 on NT4 PDC to Win2000 member server

Hello,

I have a tricky thing:

I have 1 domain with 1 NT PDC and 1 Win2000 member server. The (old)
NT4 machine is running exchange 5.5 and is doing logon/account
validation.

I have to install exchange 5.5 also on the w2000 member server and
"copy" the configuration and mailbox data from the NT4 machine. The
w2000 server must also become a Domain Controller because the NT4
server is going away/put off (its harware specs are to low to upgrade
to win2000).

So what can i do ?

* Install exchange on the w2000 member server as a second server in
the existing site, than move the mailboxes, remove the first server in
the site(the nt server) and upgrade to a domain controller ?

or

* is it possible to, or do i have to promote the w2000 member server
first as a DC and then installing exchange (is that possible with the
NT4 PDC in the same domain?) ?

Really don't know how to go further with this, any help would be
appreciated because...my boss is looking for his gun...

Thanks a lot, Peter...

Exchange Servers Admin >> Exchange 5.5 on NT4 PDC to Win2000 member server Peter,
Probably the most 'seamless' way to accomplish your upgrade woud be to
install Exchange 5.5 on the Win2k box, as a second server in the same site,
then move mailboxes and rehome public folders to the new Exch server
before decommissioning the old one.

As far as the upgrade to Active Directory, you will need to either add an
NT4.0 BDC, make it the PDC, then upgrade it to Win2k, OR perform an
in-place upgrade of your current PDC, then run DCPromo on the Win2k member
server to bring it up to the domain controller role in Active Directory.

Keep in mind, however, that there are issues associated with running
Exchange 5.5 on a Windows 2000 Domain controller. See 275127 XADM: How to
Configure Exchange Server 5.5 to Run on a Domain Controller
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=275127

Hope this helps!
