Hi,
I'm really stuck on my project to install various .NET / framework 3.0 / Vista development learning resources installed on my Windows XP SP2 system...
My system is pretty well equipted, HP laptop with AMD Athlon 64 etc...I've installed the framework 2.0 & express editions of VS, as far as I know without any problems...I installed the Windows PSDK (the latest, with the .NET 3.0 samples and updated win32 and VistaBridge stuff, and that seemed to go OK also, and used the utility to 'update' my express vs editions, (well i think it really only affects C++), and it changed the exe, include, lib paths properly and C++ is able to compile sample programs properly (at least those that do not require Vista). C# Express is willing to open some (but not all) WPF apps, and XAML based apps (and can deal with the 3.0 references they have...) .
I also installled the .NET 3.0 framework, and it finished without complaint, indicated that it succeeded...
However, when I try to install 'Orcas', its setup program says I do not have the 3.0 Net framework installed, and halts...Also the PSDK sample preview program will not successfully compile, and the hands on learning labs seem to require orcas, so I can go no further...
Am I mistaken in assuming that Orcas can even be installed under XP Does it require Vista I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the 3.0 Net framework, no change in Orcas install, still complains of no dotNet 3.0 runtime installation...
Any ideas Help really appreciated, (I've spend a couple weeks getting this far, reinstalling and testing Vista versions a couple times, going back and forth between XP and Vista to find a system that seems to have the best performance characteristics for my hardware, etc...but at this point I'm pretty frustrated because really the goal of it all was to be able to work with the samples and labs...My impression is that much of the functionality I would like to have depends on getting Orcas to work...anyway, thanks much for any thoughts here...

Have you had a look at Tom Archers matrix over SDK's and orcas that work together http://blogs.msdn.com/tomarcher/archive/2006/07/17/668572.aspx
I never followed it and I got trouble so I hope that if I actually followed it I would be able to get it to work, including the designer.
.NET 3.0 (beta) should be in the windows SDK.

Not that it helps, but I've got the exact same problem and feel your frustration.
According to the GAC, I'm running version 3.0.0.0 of PresentationFramework (Public key token: 31bf3856ad364e35).
I'm surprised that .NET 3.0 doesn't follow the previous pattern of including other build numbers in the path, such as
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727
I've just got
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0
Anyway, the Orcas installer doesn't believe .NET 3 is on my machine even though I can use XamlPad from the SDK just fine.

Hi Aaron,
Once again, you come through for us!
What's interesting is that it turns out that the Orcas bits (or parts) got installed on my system at some point. Running the Orcas setup again gave the error that .NET 3. wasn't installed instead of prompting for a repair or removal. Also, uninstalling Orcas instructed all of the Express SKUs to demand registration info - even though they had all been registered.
Anyway, I re-downloaded the software from the links you kindly provided. I installed .NET 3 and then Orcas. It seems to have worked.
(BTW, the WPF designer in Orcas works/acts like a pre-alpha, but that's another story for another forum. )
Thanks again,
Ken

Pardon my very tardy reply, if you ever get it! I had done some follow up checking on my post for several days after posting it, but didn't see any quick or mid term responses....Sometimes, 'descretion is the better part...' and decided that i had reached a dead end in my attempt to install Orcas...It was kind of a novel experience (he says smugly), in that usually when I want to get sometime to work as badly as I wanted to get the whole Vista development system up and running, I can find a way ... somehow ... but this particular avenue was becoming a significant sink -hole of my time, and I decided to take the easy way out -- I bought a bigger, badder, meaner computer system that would be fully capable of running the full blown 64 bit version of the Vista Beta, with a view to leave my XP sorrows behind me for good. That worked. (And hey, man, these dual core pc's are really definitely a riot!) Things install, things compile.. Horray for the easy way out!
where's the MFC though! (Image the little old lady at the hamburger joint 'where's the beef!!)Never really liked MFC but have sentimental attachment to some stuff I wrote that depends on the presense of the library...[strings and things ] ...I now face the daunting prospect of installing Visual studio 2003 AFTER installing all the new stuff.., to compile my old programs...I used to like installing Visual Studio 2003, but somehow, the dew is off the grass on that, and shovelling in one CD after another, day and night, night and day, its grueling, i tell you...I think that, in reading over the various notes related to all this, that, having the question in the back of my mind 'i wonder if it will be possible to install vs 2003 after installing the new platform', that I didn't see anything prohibitive on that...but I seem to recall reading that uninstalling vs 2003 is catastrophic. I become easily confused on these kinds of things, however...if anyone reading this thinks I have it wrong, a note to the wise would be appreciated...
