Visual Basic >> ClickOnce

Hello,

1) Can the ClickOnce deployment program be used for VB6 projects?
2) I have VS2005 pro. Where is this program? How can I obtain it?

Almost everybody in this newsgroup is using VB6 or lower (this is the case
for all newsgroups with ".vb." in the name). While you may get a stray
answer to VB.NET (including VB2003, VB2005 and VB Express which have dropped
.NET from their names) questions here, you should ask them in newsgroups
devoted exclusively to .NET programming (the languages are different enough
to warrant separate newsgroup support). Look for newsgroups with either the
word "dotnet" or "vsnet" in their name.

For the microsoft news server (msnews.microsoft.com), try these newsgroups
for Visual Basic .NET related questions...

microsoft.public.dotnet.languages.vb
microsoft.public.dotnet.languages.vb.upgrade
microsoft.public.dotnet.languages.vb.controls
microsoft.public.dotnet.languages.vb.data

And these for more general .NET questions

microsoft.public.dotnet.general
microsoft.public.vsnet.general

Note: There are many other .NET newgroups (use the first three "fields" from
the last two as templates when searching for them), but the above ones
should get you started.

Visual Basic >> ClickOnce Hello rick,

I am asking a question on whether I can use ClickOnce for VB6
deployment. Therefore if I post it to .NET usergroups wouldn't they say post
it to VB6 groups?

I am looking someting for better VB6 deployment tool other than the what
comes with VB6. It is not clear from
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vbasic/ms789088.aspx that ClickOnce does
it.

Do you have any suggestion? What deployment tool do you use for VB6?

Sorry, I misunderstood your original question. As for using ClickOnce for
VB6... the article at this link

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vbrun/aa730841(vs.80).aspx

seems to say yes; but not having worked with anything related to the .NET
world, I can't offer anything additional about it.

"ClickOnce" is more of a Marketing sound bite, that an actual technology.
For any application of any consequence it often takes a lot of planning to
produce that one click. <g>

AFAIK, ClickOnce is available only on one of the property pages of a VB.Net
project. I don't think you can use it for anything else.

It is basically the same idea as writing a stub program that checks things first
before launching your main executable. Of course it uses manifests in xml, not a
simple file list, and is insanely finicky about checksums and such. But the idea
is that it checks the list on a server, using http, against what is installed
locally, and updates as needed, before launching the app. In fact the first time
you run it, it does the same thing, discovering of course that you need
everything.
