Re:responsibilities for $35,000/year?

Personally, I wouldn't get out of bed for that sort of

money (currently earning roughly $60k). I would imagine

that is about entry level for a desktop support

technician.

"Would" implies a situation that is currently non-existant. Please change

"would" to "am", and re-conjugate any verbs that may need it. Thank you.

Re:responsibilities for $35,000/year?

Ugh! I can't ignore this post any more...

Kwyjibo... if I were you, I would accept that pay... do your job the way you

were hired... you can ask your employer for a raise if you feel you deserve

it but don't be surprised if he says no. If you make too much noise and get

fired or you quit, you will be out of a job for a while because the market

sucks... then you will hunt for a job and may end up getting only

$25,000/yr... if you have a job that is paying you that much, you can look

around for higher pay but I would keep my mouth shut while looking... do

your job... get a good reference... gain experience... EARN a pay raise...

the economy is filled with people who are earning a lot less than you and

deserve more and are just waiting for someone like you to step out of that

job so they can earn more money... it is respectable pay... perhaps not as

much as you want but the economy does not allow for greed in the IT field

right now. Employers know that if they have a disgruntled employee, there

are 1000's out there willing to work for your pay and less... so I would be

careful what you wish for... using words like underpaid is not safe... some

may look at that $35000 and wonder what the hell you are thinking... convert

it to CDN funds so I can relate directly... and it works out to about

$47,324/yr... that is more than I make annually and I have a lot of

experience/training/certifications. The market just does not have the room

for greed... you CAN be replace with someone who is willing to take whatever

they can get to supply food for their family.

I believe that location is a factor as well. If you live in NY or TO or

LA you will make more. And pay way more to live there. If you are making

enough to live comforatbly (you eat, you don't get rained on at night and

you aren't barefoot), quitcherbichin' or some schmo will be happy to oust

ya!

I find it quite amusing. The whole "contract renegotiation" thing. Happens a

bit in pro sports, and I laugh every time. If the pay was unacceptable to

you, why on earth did you sign the contract? Be thankful that they didn't

laugh in yuor face when you told them the pay wasn't enough. At least

they're hearing you out and not mocking you. And, if you signed a contract

as "Network Admin", you should be doing network administration. Not

"different" work. You contract is for network administration. Period. Not

mopping the floor or answering phones. Tell them to give you network

administration work.

Re:responsibilities for $35,000/year?

Unbelievable!

How can anyone (that isn't single) live on 35k a year?

I live in Louisiana, ranked 49th in poverty, no property

taxes on anything under 80k. and I make 75K and my wife

(a school teacher) makes 22K and I still have trouble paying

the bills.

Now LA schools suck so my two kids are in private

school, plus I have some credit card bills, a mortgage,

cable, car note, etc. but I would have to declare bankruptcy

to go on 35K.

And that's what the industry has to offer?

What is wrong with you people? I guess the start at entry

level and work your way up thing is fine, especially for the

younger crowd just starting out, but I thought the days of

staying with a company long term were over. Companies have no

loyalty to tenured employees anymore; jut lay them off when

profits take a dip.

Screw big companies, they scare me. Now, a government job

that's what you want. Can't get fired, excellent benefits,

great retirement. Eh, Consultant?

Uh... as a "government" worker, I beg to differ. High end, HIGHEST

possible rate here is $29 an hour, canadian tire money. I'm making $25

now. Hence the medical school consideration. My BF works for a hospital,

also Government, makes $30 as well. He sin't likely to get a raise

either, despite his experience (years) certs, or the fact that he has 4

hospitals fighting over him. I still can't believe some of the stories

On a side note, I have had 4 users tell me their passwords today. No

in my military days I started out at only $18,000 CDN (back in 90)... I was

19 and that was a lot of money for me... worked my way thru the ranks... had

a couple of kids... got divorced... raised the kids as a single mom making

$42,000 at time of release... work that out in American and that is only

$31, 000 USD... still had enough to live well... had a car... ok home...

(well as ok as military housing gets)... wasnt swamped in debt... I made an

My mom, divorced and 42, makes 8.50 and hour (Canadian). She pays 1000

getting free food :) Gotta love you parents.
