I written a win2k plug n play driver for pcmcia 16 bit PC card.From my
application I want to open a handle for our device. In my Application I
used SetupDi* functions to get the Device name. Later I called the
CreateFIle() function.
After calling SetupDi* functions finally I got Device interface
name in string variable
deviceInterfaceDetailData->DevicePath.
I called the above string variable as first parameter in CreateFile()
function.
My Device Interface name string is

If I call the above function Iam getting the return value as
INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE, With GetLastError() function Iam getting the
error code 50.which is nothing but,
"The Network Request is not supported".
What could be the reason? Any mistake is there in the above procedure
please correct it.
Or if any other methods are there to get a handle of a device please
guide me.=20

WASHINGTON (AP) - It's the newest computer security
problem to attract the attention of Congress: spyware, or
software designed to collect computer users' personal data
without their knowledge.
Secretly piggybacking on downloaded Internet software,
spyware transmits information about computer usage and
generates pop-up advertisements and other annoyances. It
often is difficult to uninstall.
Little known a few years ago, spyware is now so common
that many consider it the biggest problem for Internet
users since spam.
Microsoft estimates spyware is responsible for half of all
PC crashes and warns that it has become a multimillion-
dollar support issue for computer makers, Internet service
providers and technicians.
In some cases, it makes a computer unusable.
A research lab in Washington state found one of its
computers "hijacked" by pop-up ads, to the point where "we
couldn't do anything," said Patrick Clapshaw, the lab's
director.
After a week of frustration and several visits by
technicians, the problem was eventually solved, but not
before causing at least $500 worth of lost data and
downtime.
Clapshaw, of Kirkland, Wash., calls spyware worse than
spam.
"To me, this is an aggressive computer takeover," he
said. "It's the difference between someone dropping fliers
on your front porch, or walking around your house
following you and annoying you."
Members of Congress are taking the threat seriously. At
least three bills have been introduced to address the
problem, with more likely to follow.
"There is no more pernicious, intrusive activity going on
in the Internet today" than spyware, said Rep. Joe Barton,
R-Texas, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce
Committee.
At a hearing Thursday before the panel's subcommittee on
commerce, trade and consumer protection, computer makers
and user groups urged Congress to address deceptive
behavior, rather than ban categories of software. Citing a
new Utah law, the groups said broad legislation could end
up prohibiting legitimate practices and stifle innovation.
Members of the Federal Trade Commission also urged caution
as officials learn more about the problem and the best way
to combat it.
"I do not believe legislation is the answer at this time,"
said commission member Mozelle Thompson. "Instead, we
should give industry the time to respond. Self-regulation
combined with enforcement of existing laws might be the
best way to go."
The go-slow approach infuriated Barton, who said he
intends to push a spyware bill through his committee - and
the full House - this year.
"You like this stuff? You're the only person in this
country that wants spyware on their computer," he told
Howard Beales, the FTC's consumer protection chief.
Barton urged FTC officials to work with the committee to
draft a new law "instead of trying to defend something
that's indefensible."
Beales said the FTC considers spyware a problem, but wants
to make sure that legislation targets deceptive behavior
while allowing legitimate uses. Some proposed solutions,
such as requiring permission every time a user downloads a
new program, "would make the process of installing new
software extremely tedious," Beales said.
Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., whose district includes
Kirkland, called it "absolutely astounding" that the FTC
does not see a need for a new law "when we have hundreds
of thousands of violations every day." Inslee introduced a
bill Thursday that would outlaw spyware programs designed
to record Web browsing habits and collect personal data
without notice and consent of the user.
Rep. Mary Bono, R-Calif., has introduced a similar bill
requiring that consumers receive a clear and conspicuous
notice before downloading software. The bill would also
require that third parties disclose their identity to the
consumer, along with a valid e-mail address.
Sens. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and
Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., have introduced a bill
prohibiting installation of software on someone else's
computer without notice and consent. The bill also would
require reasonable "uninstall" procedures for new software.

- WindowsServices >> Looking for a modified Links List Web PartI'm setting up a WSS site for my company. We are using a links list web
part and the list of links has grown longer than fit on one screen.
Someone has suggested a list with the letters A through Z at the top,
so when a user clicks on "N" for example, the list is displayed
starting with the N descriptions.
I'd like to do this as simply as possible. Use what comes out of the
box from Microsoft. Use a web part someone else has written. Buy a web
part. If needed, create one.
This is all fairly new to me, so I'm also looking for pointers on where
to find this kind of information, so when the next question comes
along, I'll have a better idea of where to start looking.

using RDP but NOT giving them full Admin permissions ?
I have a bit of software which a member of staff needs to use which is
server based which cannot be run on an end client. It has to be run on the
server.
I really don't want this person playing around [ for obvious reasons ] as I
know they will. I want to restrict access to the program and that only.
I would appreciate any advice on this.

- win2000 >> Safely Removing HardwareHave a couple Buslink USB external harddrives connected to
a server running Windows 2000 Server. Recently, whenever
one of those drives is connected, there is no "Safely
Remove Hardware" icon located in the system taskbar. If I
go into "Control Panel"->"Add/Remove Hardware" and then
use the wizard to "Uninstall/Unplug a device"-
>"Unplug/Eject a device", the device does not show up in
the window. However, if I go ahead and unplug the device
I get the usual warning stating "Unsafe Removal of Device"
and it lists the device name in the window. Why isn't the
device being recognized in the "Safely Remove Hardware"
window and how do I get it to recognize? I should
mention, when the drives are connected, they show up in
Windows Explorer like normal and they can be used normally.

I have created a site in which I am using survey as a Quiz. I have
given site permission as contributer in Anonymous Access for the site.
As while I was giving 'Anonymous Access as reader' then Domain user was
not able to participate in Quiz (Survey).
While now by giving 'Anonymous Access contributer' the domain users are
able to participate in Quiz(Survey) but they are also able to change
Web Part Setting and also able to design(Modify) the page. But I don't
want user to do all these things.
I just want them to participate in survey.
We can't give option to view all responses as that is Quiz not a
survey.
Also In 'Change Permission of the Survey' In the left panal 'Change
anonymous access' all the check boxes for (Add, Edit And View Items)
are disabled so we are not able to set permission for anonymous users.
Please consider as urgent request.
Please suggest.

opening an office overseas and need to have a local DC out there yet
we need to have them in our Exchange system and be able to share
files...I was wondering if anyone out there has done a DCPromo over a
VPN connection (Hardware VPN, and figure T1 speeds)
Or is it more feasable to create a completely separate domain/forest
out there and just setup a trust? (Can I setup a trust for 2 domains
that are not in the same forest?,,,would Exchange be a problem between
the domains?)

I have windows ME
First issue- How can I remove files from my restore files,
I have some that contain known trojans/worms/viruses in
there, but it says that they cannot be removed as they are
being accessed or something. It just said unremovable
with the program I used.
second issue- My computer is lagging in minute intervals,
not on the minute, but exactly a minute inbetween each
one. It is not my internet connection, as it does it when
I am not on the internet using any program, and when I am
on the internet. It lags from anywhere between 3-5
seconds, this never stops or starts up again, it is
constant, and might I add, annoying.
third issue- I have a few anti-adware/spyware programs. A
few work still, but all of a sudden 2 of them will now
close automatically after being opened for about 15
seconds, they just close up. And to make matters worse,
my registry now will do the same thing if I run a search.
A related thing, when my computer shuts down improperly,
the auto disk check NEVER ends now, It continously starts
over.
Well, thats all for now, I have been very good at solving
most problems myself, but these have me baffled and
frustrated, so If you can help, I thank you very much.

one box and the second server will run Server 2003 and Exchange 2003.
What is the best route leave the exchange server a member server or since
there is only going to be two servers make them both DC's?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. 25 users I forgot to mention that.
Each server has 1GB of RAM and 1, 2.8 zeon, capable of 2. QTY 4 73 GB HDD in
2 mirrored arrays.

I found a KB article with the same error for XP Home but not Server
2003. How do I solve this problem?

First of all, I'd like to ask you to believe that my phone line in my
apartment is bugged, and has been for many months. I have moved a couple
of times this year, but "they" have faithfully been on my trail.
Anyway, let's suppose my phone line is bugged. Now, when I talk to my
internet service provider, it's over a SLIP (now PPP) connection. So if
you wanted to bug what was said, either you'd listen in over the line and
have to decode the transmission, or you could go to the service provider
(more difficult) and ask them to decode a particular user's connection.
OK, so now they're listening to everything I do over my SLIP/PPP
connection. A couple of months ago I was messing around with faking
articles through nntp servers and through anonymous remailers. I chose a
nice inconspicuous newsgroup for my little tests, something no-one would
ever notice. Guess which newsgroup I chose??? Yes, _FISH_!!! or
rec.aquaria to be precise
And guess what articles I tried to post? Goldfish, Koi carp and, you'll
never guess... PIRANHA!!! The goldfish article and the Koi went through,
but the piranha didn';t appear.
by now you probably think this is too silly for words. But if you look in
the papers a few eeks ago you will find John Major, Tonny Blair and Paddy
Ashdown sharing a "private joke" about Major's sunburnt goldfish. We
haven't had anything about Koi yet (they must be too dull ). Now, sent by
someone who clearly knew what they were doing (they chose an Italian
backbone site for their launch point) we have many thousands of messages
to people all over the globe. All about piranha, and with the punchline
"that gives you something to think about, doesn't it?"
The way it works is that they're trying to kill two birds with one stone
again. I don't knoiw why they should be against these national alliance
people, but my interpretation is that they simultaneously try to
discredit them, and stem the flow of Corley articles.

I'll just enumerate one or two things that I can still remember. Sometime
around August/Sept 1992 I was living in a house in Oxford, and coming out
of the house was physically attacked by someone - not punched, just grabbed
by the coat, with some verbals thrown in for good measure. That was something
the people at work shouldn't have known about... but soon after a couple of
people were talking right in front of me about, "yeah, I heard he was
attacked".
Again, one I went for a walk in some woods outside Oxford. The next day,
at work, someone said "you know he went to the forest yesterday".
I don't want to put details on usenet of what happened because to do so
would be to risk it happening again. If you put ideas in peoples' heads
then you can find them reflecting back at you, and I don't want that.
Also I can't remember that much from three years ago. From november 1992
I started taking "major tranquilizers" and just blotted the whole thing
from my mind.

They pretend they "have" to get at me. After the first few weeks they had
to find a reason to spy and abuse. You can't abuse someone unless they're
in the wrong in some way. What I did "wrong" was to be ill. So it became
"nutter" and "monster" and "he's going to attack us" coupled with
"ha ha ha, he can't do anything to defend himself, it was so funny". That
obvious contradiction within their propaganda is something they
blithely ignore.

A single source is indicated because of the range of harassment.
BBC + Capital + manipulated_public_at_large + set_up_situations,
what does that add up to? Add in the technology to carry out the
covert spying and the manpower and knowhow to follow you around for
five years without being spotted. It smells very much of the security
services, because there is no other organization (to my knowledge)
which does the things I've seen these people do.
Remember, they have deliberately chosen the softest of soft targets
to victimize. They purposely chose a mentally ill person who they thought
would be likely to kill himself anyway, so that they could get away with
murder.
And in all likelihood it will have started as a personal vendetta by someone.
Who could that be? I don't know, but I can give you some clues.
The first possibility (deep breath) is that someone from my college set me
up. Six years ago I graduated from university in the UK, during the last
year there I was steadily getting more and more ill. I know that I was
talking in my sleep; although I don't know what I was saying, it got
me a reputation, and if someone from my college talked afterwards to
the "wrong" people then that could be the reason for all that has followed.
I think that's the strongest contender for source. Directly beneath my
room lived another bloke who frequently had his friends round late at
night, after the time that I went to sleep. So they could have heard what
I was saying in my sleep, and that could have got me the reputation for
"talking to myself".
What I don't know is why that should have rebounded a year after I left.
You'd think it would have happened sooner; it's a bit odd to wait for a
year and then start abuse. That leads me to question what in particular
happened around May/June 1990 for them to start then.

Yes. I am currently considering the possibility that some people around me
know only what is being posted on Usenet, and have not been "contacted"
by "them". But I _know_ that others have been contacted.

In England the all-time No. 1 is "nutter". Easter this year, returning home
from Clapham police station to report five years of harassment ("we're not

"not happening" incident of harassment when a cowardly little slut did her
country proud by yelling "nutter, nutter, nutter" in the face of the
hated enemy.
What can you do about that? You can't yell abuse back in their face, because
they know they're supported by their peers, by the media, by the murderers in
the security forces. You can't put them down when the fascist establishment
is on their side. You can't hit them, because they would deny their abuse,
they would deny knowing anything, and bring charges against the "nutter"
who attacked them "at random".

I think I've said already what the words are. Thing is, at any given time
the language is consistent. In January everyone's calling you X, then a
few weeks later people stop calling you X and start calling you Y.
You can tell it's aimed at me, because when people repeatedly say the same
words are you walk past, then laugh, you would have to be hard of
understanding not to recognize it.

I still don't really know if the meaning was intended when that headline was
written, or if it was simply "found" after the fact. The reason I think it
might be the former is that I got quite a lot of abuse along the lines of
"sound-alike" or "double-entendre" at work, in particularly from Steve.
So "double" inevitably came to mean split-personality, "two people in one";
"back" inevitably came to mean "backside", "come" inevitably meant you-know-
what, "split" (well, we'd better split now) again you can guess, "bent" (of
a similar bent), the list goes on forever. These aren't "nice" double-
entendres intended for comedy, they're nasty words to humiliate and cause
pain. If I could turn the clock back three years then I would sue my
former employers for harassment and I would almost certainly win. I had to
take pills after a year of Oxford, so they wouldn't be able to lie their
way out of it. Actually, I could still take them to court - the main
obstacle being that three years after the fact is a bit late and much
of what happened, the details that would be necessary for a case to go
to court, has just been obliterated by time.

behind the infrared receiver lens of the remote control system (just
beside the IR sensor itself) the camera clocked out the data in 256 lines
of 256 pixels from a Fairchild chip and fed it out, a line at a time,
into the VBI within the TV set itself. The signal could be picked up
remotely from a standard license detector van from where it was stripped
out of the surrounding RF signal and relayed back to the TV station where
it was displayed as a slowscan monochrome image in a corner of the news
readers monitor.

- Security >> MS Update ScheduleDoes anyone know what Microsoft's schedule is for releasing updates? I know
that the security updates are released once a month at 10 AM PST. Do they
hold all security updates until the release day (and time) or are there times
when they are released outside of the schedule?
What about critical updates? I'm assuming that they are released as soon as
possible but I wanted to make sure.

GPIOs that can be configured as IRQ) direct from his application
written in C#.
I am not a expert in .NET CF, so I hope that someone could give me
some advice to emulate the normal way to do so (CreateEvent,
InterruptInitialize, CreateThread and so on) but under C#. I think P/
invoking all these C functions won't be very elegant...

There are a number of things that they want to do that cannot be done
(AFAIK) in the standard product. I would like to know if there are third
party web parts that provide this functionality.
Essentialy the key areas of functionality are:
1. Auto email based on user created date categories (e.g. a Review Date
category will be added to a document library and emails should be auto
generated as this date approaches).
2. Automatically place/update a 'task' in a calendar list based on the
Review Date assigned to a document.
3. [Desirable] automatically insert review tasks for documents into MS
Project.
4. Create printed reports of all documents returned by a given filter
(instead of using 'Edit In Datasheet' and printing that).
5. Key word (not content) search. i.e. have a free text field for each
document into which multiple key words could be entered and provide the
facility to filter by any one keyword (standard filter does not seem to
support this).
6. Filter documents where the review date falls within a date range
(standard filter does not seem to support this).
Can anyone recommend web parts capable of doing any/some/all of the above.
I am a competent VB and SQL Server developer. I have not had a chance to
look at the database structure in WSS, but one possibility would be to try
to develop a VB app that would implement some of the above. If anyone has
experience of working with WSS this way, how difficult would you say this
would be?

default the left menu has some prefix and sufix entries you can enter in HTML
code. But I dont see anything that doesthis for the main top level menu. I am
wanting to place graphics along with the links.... so (home graphic) Home ..
(document graphic) Documents & Lists .. (site graphic) Settings link.
Is this described in any MS documentation and I have just missed it.

- Drivers >> Errors in the Printer Driver when buildingHi Guys!
Good day! I am currently developing a printer driver based on the samples
provided in the WDK. I was able to build and integrate a TIFF library so that
my output will be in TIFF rather than in Bitmap. My problem now is that I am
trying to put a custom property sheet in the printer driver but i am getting
these errors (see error snippet). I have already included the required
headers for the property sheet (see header snippet) but I am still getting
these errors.
I am building the code using the Windows XP checked Build Environment
provided in the WDK.
Any ideas?

Can anyone tell me how I can download the Help and Support
Update for Windows ME.
I am unable to use Windows Update as I cannot access any
Microsoft Web Sites with IE. I can using FireFox.
The MS KnowledgeBase says that it is available via the
Downloads section but I cannot find it anywhere.
If anyone knows why I cannot access MS sites with IE,
please help here as well. My PC just hangs when I try. I
can go to most other sites.
I am using Windows ME, IE 6.0 with SP1.

- Drivers >> VFW developmenthello,
So I did some research and figured out that one way to share my screen
trough flash is with a vfw driver. Before I think about buying one I
want to try develop one of my own.
The situation is that I have a web based application for e-learning
designed in Flash. I want to be able to send a clients desktop screen to
the application. No screenshots but stream. So, the source must be
available in the camera properties of flash. (right click flash movie,
properties, camera tab, dropdown menu).
I also saw that there is a possibility to do this with a mirror driver.
I installed the VNC mirror driver but it don't appear in the flash
properties.
Since I have no experience in writing a vfw driver I wonder if someone
could point me into some direction I should start looking or even give
me some advise about how to do it.
