SBS >> ODBC I need to create an ODBC connection from XP Pro client to our SQL Server (on
the network). We are running SBS2003 Premier.

Can I:

1. Remote control to these machines (like VNC) and do this without having
to visit
the machines in turn...or...
2. Upload some kind of install so that it updates the ODBC DSN?

I need some help. I have around 30 machines to do, and I would rather spend
30 minutes doing this than a whole day!

Please help.

SBS >> ODBC Hi SKC,

Thanks for posting here.

For your description, I understand that you want to know whether you can
create ODBC connection for remote client PCs and can update the ODBC DSN.
If I am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

To answer your question, you can use RDP or VNC to logon remote client PCs
to create ODBC connection. You can refer to the steps:
1. Click Start, click Command Prompt, and then type "tsmmc.msc" (no
quotation marks) in command line. Press Enter to open the remote desktops
console.

2. Right-click Remote Desktops in the left root node and click Add new
connection to add PCs you want to control.

And you can also manage the client PCs in Server Management Console.
1. Click client Computers node in Server Management Console and all domain
client PCs are listed in right panel.
2. Click any PC you want to manage and click Connect to Computer via
Terminal services in left side of link. You can logon to the pc.

Prerequisite:

1. Configure the internal Windows XP machine as the SecureNAT client. It
means that the Default Gateway of the internal machine must be the internal
IP of the SBS.

2. If you have ISA Server 2000 installed on the SBS 2003, we may perform
the following steps:

1) Create a Client Address Set, and then add the IP addresses of the
internal machines that need to use ODBC through SBS.
2) Create a Protocol Rule to allow all outgoing traffic, and then apply to
the newly created Client Address Set.
3) Create a Site and Content Rule to allow sites and contents, and then
apply to the newly created Client Address Set.
4) Restart the Firewall service.

After that, your internal machines should be able to connect ODBC through
SBS.

In addition, we would also like to give some reference about how to use
script to implement your needs. You can refer to the following KB articles:

How To Set Up ODBC Data Sources When Distributing Apps
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;123008

Hope above information helps! Please note script is not supported in the
newsgroups. If you have any further concern or question about the script of
the KB I suggest you post to our MSDN newsgroups. I have provided the link
below:
