- Windows XP >> Win XP Logon RecoveryHello... a few months back I made a password recovery
disk incase I ever needed it. However, I don't like the
idea of keeping it anymore. Is there anyway I can
disable the popup that asks me if I forgot my password if
I type it in incorrectly? Also will changing the
password resolve the problem? Thanks,

- Windows XP Support >> Winzip 10.0 QuestionI know how to zip up a group of individual files.
Is there an easy way to zip a set of files in a group of nested folders? In
other words, suppose we have top folder A which holds Subfolders B and C. B
and C each contain a set of files or other folders, etc..
Is there an easy way to have Winzip to roll up all the files continued in
all the nested folders, without having to go into each subfolder and
individually add all the files?

if it still has his settings on it so should I press the reset button to get
it back to factory settings before I connect to my system? It is a Netgear

I'll have to download the manual from Netgear's website.

Windows XP >> registry cleaner screwing up IE7
Hi,
I just installed Abexo Registry Cleaner Free, and cleaned up my registry.
My computer is faster (very faster), however, it just chewed up IE's a...
I'd better not say it.
I just reset my browser and it is so annoying. It thinks I'm with AAPT when
we are with a different ISP. It still connects to the internet (thank god),
but I want to make sure that it didn't mess about with my computer. Is there
anyone who had this before?
Thank's in advance.

"...that it didn't mess about with my computer."
But that is exactly the purpose of registry cleaners.
That is a potential problem with registry cleaners and why I suggest
they not be used.
If it is a decent registry cleaner, there is a way to restore the
deleted data.
Otherwise System Restore to Date/Time before this all started.
If you are going to use a registry cleaner, there are a few things you
should know:
1. Understand how the registry cleaner works and how it restore back
if you encounter problems.
If restoring back is not an option with your cleaner, do not use that
cleaner.
2. Know enough about the registry to recognize if what the cleaner
marks as bad truly is.
If you are unsure and can not make a positive determination, leave it
alone.

Registry cleaners can be unforgiving. Experts usually advise against the use
of these so-called 'cleaners'. I'd uninstall this application- it's not
needed!
If you have problems uninstalling use:
Revo Uninstaller
http://www.revouninstaller.com/
Then download:
ERUNT and NTREGOPT
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
use NTREGOPT to streamline you registry.
ERUNT can be very useful.
Sometimes registry items are left behind when uninstalling a program.
This application is pretty useful as well:
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
RegSeeker can find, delete and back-up these registry items.
But don't use the 'Clean the Registry" function.
Good luck :)

But, every PC has a different combination of Hardware/Software and
settings. While your setup may allow for "Damage Free" use, that does
not guarantee that someone else wouldn't end up with a damaged XP
using either program.
Again the problem is the subjective determination of what is and is not
safe to remove. Every Registry Cleaner has the potential to nick a key
or value that could break something. If the cleaner only goes after MRU
lists and other "Workspace" items that's relatively safe. If it drills into
the associations ( Unused extensions...) and starts removing things then
you're asking for trouble.
Believe me when I say I frequently fix PCs that the user listened to
Kim Komando's show and turned a Registry Cleaner loose on their PC.

Actually I did catch that. The point was that Registry Cleaners have
different levels of actions, like the cutting height of a mower. Some
just clip the tops - others cut down too far.

Not at all surprising. *NO* automated registry cleaner does anything
of value, and they all have the potential of damaging the OS.
Why did you think you needed a registry "cleaner?"
What specific *problems* are you actually experiencing (not some
snake oil program's bogus listing of imaginary problems) that you think
can be fixed by using a registry cleaner? If you do have a problem that
is rooted in the registry, it would be far better to simply edit (after
backing up, of course) only the specific key(s) and/or value(s) that are
causing the problem. After all, why use a chainsaw when a scalpel will
do the job? Additionally, the manually changing of one or two registry
entries is far less likely to have the dire consequences of allowing an
automated product to make multiple changes simultaneously.
The registry contains all of the operating system's "knowledge" of
the computer's hardware devices, installed software, the location of the
device drivers, and the computer's configuration. A misstep in the
registry can have severe consequences. One should not even turning
loose a poorly understood automated "cleaner," unless he is fully
confident that he knows *exactly* what is going to happen as a result of
each and every change. Having seen the results of inexperienced people
using automated registry "cleaners," I can only advise all but the most
experienced computer technicians (and/or hobbyists) to avoid them all.
Experience has shown me that such tools simply are not safe in the hands
of the inexperienced user.
The only thing needed to safely clean your registry is knowledge
and Regedit.exe. If you lack the knowledge and experience to maintain
your registry by yourself, then you also lack the knowledge and
experience to safely configure and use any automated registry cleaner,
no matter how safe they claim to be.
Further, no one has ever demonstrated, to my satisfaction, that the
use of an automated registry cleaner, particularly by an untrained,
inexperienced computer user, does any real good. There's certainly been
no empirical evidence offered to demonstrate that the use of such
products to "clean" WinXP's registry improves a computer's performance
or stability.
I always use Regedit.exe. I trust my own experience and judgment
far more than I would any automated registry cleaner. I strongly
encourage others to acquire the knowledge, as well.

Since you're running IE7, the solution is fairly simple. Uninstall IE7
and that snake oil registry cleaner, and then reinstall IE7. That
should remove the bogus branding.

Use the restore feature. Restore your registry. See if IE is fixed.
I ran Abexo the other day and it came up with a couple hundred
errors. I chose fix problems and it only fixed two and they were
MRU's. Those 2 or 4 hundred errors are marketing scams.

Windows XP >> registry cleaner screwing up IE7
Hey, I just found out about these registry cleaners - and now what they do.
Don't just say that I am useless (in case that is what you are thinking)
when it comes to registry cleaners.

Thank you!
I have considered uninstalling the program, because I think my file
extensions have gone wrong too. Don't worry!

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Transferring collections to a different Windows UserHow do I transfer or copy my collections to another Windows User on the
same computer?
I just started using Windows Movie Maker. After working with it for awhile,
I decided to set up a separate Windows User, to use Movie Maker in.
Now I would like to move all the collections I've been working on to this
new user, but I can't figure out how. I tried copying the MEDIATAB1.DAT
file to the corresponding directory for the new user, but then when I start
Movie Maker as that user, it doesn't use that file. In fact, it deletes
that file and replaces it with a new one, with no collections.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Windows XP RepairAfter I changed the mother board etc on my computer I did a repair set up of
XP which seemed to work OK except that at one stage (nothing particular
happening) the screen went blue due to a stop situation and then a message
appeared:
Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory to disc
Followed by a count down to about 100 and then the computer rebooted and
everything was OK.
An error message was sent to Microsoft which said something about a paging
error in a non paging area and suggested an updated graphics driver. As the
driver was the latest NVidia driver I am somewhat perplexed as to what
actually happened. Any suggestions please?

- Windows XP Setup >> Download.exe not respondingI take an online college class which requires a Shockwave player, however the Download.exe is not responding and I'm unable to download Shockwave. This is a new computer with XP. I've done other downloads on this computer and haven't had any problems. Is there a compatibility issue with XP and Shockwave, or could the problem be elsewhere? I sent the error report but so far nothing has happened.

- customize >> Windows explorer folder propertiesWhen I right click on a folder in windows explorer and
select the properties option, the size, numer of files
and subfolders displays 0. It used to display the size
and the contents of the folder. Can someone help me
figure out how to fix this option so that I can get
accurate values?
These are not system folders. It's occurring on all of
my folders. For example, in My Documents I have a folder
that I use to put various recipes into, that includes sub
folders for dishes, such as deserts, appetizers and the
like. I track the properties so that when the folder is
large enough I can burn it onto a cd.
Any ideas of why the properties will not display any
values?

- Windows XP Security >> Changing User AccountPosted this also in general
We have several computers in our office that were set up with Administrator
user accounts. I want to change the accounts to either a restricted user or
Power user. When I first tried changing to a restricted user I had a few
problems they were:
1. AutoCad would not open. Stated I needed to reinstall.
2. Could not open up a word document. Did not have rights to.. Just on one
machine, others were fine.
3. Half of the favorite links in Explorer did not work.
Changed user to a power user and it fixed problem 1. Have had to change user
back to administrator.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dwayne

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> ultimate "remove programs"When I go into the "add/remove programs" section it has
several programs in there that are "unresponsive." That
is, I click on "Fisher-Price Big Action Construction" and
it says, "Unable to locate the login file 'c:\apps\kids
0801\DeIsL1.isu'. Uninstallation will not continue."
It's most probable that I did a lousy "uninstall by hand"
a few years ago, and the system still thinks it is
there. However, when I search for "Fisher" anywhere on
my computer it doesn't come up.
Is there something that tracks down these "add/remove
program" identifier files and then lets me get rid of
them? Or is there a better plan? Thank you.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Problem Saving A Edited ClipTrying to learn video terminology.
I edit a clip properly. The trim line is at the proper spot.
I split or cut and save the new clip.
I know that split and cut are 2 different actions.
Tried both-No luck.
What I don't understand is: When I get out of MM2 and then go
back, why does the original full clip show up instead of the edited
clip?
Example: Play clip to remove commerical. Commerical cut or split.
New clip saved. Get out of program and later restart. The
commerical is still there.
1) What am I doing wrong?
2) What happens to the clip I saved?
Thanks in advance

I removed KB920213, KB922760, KB923980 and everything worked fine
again.
Any ideas?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Blue Screens....im desperateOS- Windows XP Pro Edition
Motherbaord - Soltek SL-75FRN2
Ram - DDR 400 512mb, one chip
Display card - Nv Geforce Fx5200
Im am having on my new custom made computer 3 weeks old.
It frequently crashes to blue screens sometimes in
reference to portcls.sys, nv4_mini.sys and some time
restarts. This is and i stress usually when i am playing
high spec games and or many applications are open. I have
been and had the mainboard and ram replaced to see if
that fixed it. I have also run a diagnostics test that
all passes except for one section called Stride6. All
windows files are fine and drivers are all up to date.
In device manager on thing is exclamation marked, the wdm
video capture (universal) could there be a problem with
the video card? Hardware temperatures are all normal.
would compatibility be an issue? I have no idea what to
do. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP Hardware >> JMicron Technology Corp - GIGABYTE GBB36X ControllerI downloaded a hardware update from the windows update website with the
result that my dvd-rw is no longer accessable (i.e. not visible in "my
computer"). I know for a fact that this occurs only when drivers are
installed on my machine that deal with raid configurations etc (my
motherboard doesn't support this (GA965-DS3)). I learnt this through trial
and error when installing the motherboard drivers that came on the driver cd
and had the same missing dvd-rw drive scenario occur. This is what happens
when companies cut corners and ship 1 driver cd for different model
motherboards i guess.
The solution to getting my dvd-rw back when I installed the motherboard cd
driver was simply to un-install it and everything worked fine. However I
can't seem to uninstall this infernal windows update hardware version of
Gigabyte's raid driver as upon reloading Windows it now detects my hardrive
as a new pieve of hardware and promptly re-installs the driver downloaded
through windows update. The other annoying thing is that now I have a icon in
the on my taskbar that represents a plug and play piece of hardware (my hard
drive) and when I go to eject it it of course says it can't...no duh!
So I ask 2 things:
1. How to I un-install this driver that exhibits alot of characteristics
akin to spyware.
2. Microsoft needs to be more careful which 3rd party companies it allows
into their update service.

When accessing some programs on my XP Pro system I am
getting a "you do not have admin rights to open this

Any ideas on how to get Admin rights on all files in one
