- Windows XP Security >> Windows XP SP2 FirewallAfter installing Win XP SP2 my XP machine could not
connect to my Linksys WRT55AG router. Other XP machines
minus SP2 still connected properly. None of the computers
are using wireless connectivity. I have turned the Windows
firewall on and off with no luck - even rebooted after
configuration changes. After uninstalling SP2 the machine
can now connect to the router. Anybody seeing anything
similar? Any ideas on a solution?
I'm in no hurry to re-install SP2 but would like to know
the configuration issues involved. What did I miss?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Basic >> The Windows\Repair filesHi all,
After some troubles getting my PC back alive I'd like to understand and
ask a few things regarding the windows\repair folder.
As I understand it contains copies of 5 important registry related files
(sam, security, software, default, system) that reside in
c:\windows\system32\config. These copies are created at the time of
the Setup of XP.
So, they are (in my case) quite unusable to get my system back alive in
case of a corrupted registry - as I found out the hard way. The reason
is that 1 year after installing XP, I made some drastic changes to my
hardware, such as installing a RAID adapter. The copies of my registry
in \windows\repair don't know about this.
Luckily I had a recent Norton Ghost image of my PC in which I also had
the 5 files and I used them to get the PC back alive.
Anyway, there is also a subfolder \windows\repair\regback in which there
are again copies of these 5 files (sam, security, software, default,
system) and those are more recent. But not "very" recent neither!
How and during which process are these copies made? And how can I force
this?
In Windows 2000 there was in the Backup-tool a "Recovery disk" option
and I know that it made copies of the registry files into that
\windows\repair\regback folder.
But how can I do this in XP?
I've tried to copy the files manually to a safe place... I can't because
they are "in use".
Can someone give me some clues?
TIA

- Windows XP Security >> SpywareMy computer is slow at login and has some spyware symptoms. I ran MS
Antispyware and it returned nothing. I ran Spybot Search and Destroy and it
returned two items WildTangent and AdRoarPlugin. It was able to fix
WildTangent, but couldn't do anyting with AdRoarPlugin. Why didn't MS
Antispyware identify AdRoarPlugin and what can I do to get rid of it? Please
advise. Thanks.

- Windows XP >> Open/Minimized Windows Don't Appear on TaskbarOk, here's a strange one:
My friend's family computer is running Windows XP (I can't recall whether it
is Home or Pro or what SP it is running, but I can get this information if
necessary). Whenever they launch any application, etc., it should normally
appear in the taskbar regardless of whether it is maximized, regular,
minimized, etc., but it is not appearing there at all. Therefore, if they
minimize the window, it just seems to disappear altogether and the only way
to bring it back is with ALT-TAB. I've tried the obvious (such as a toolbar
on the taskbar is taking up the entire taskbar, etc.), but none of the
obvious solutions seem to be correct or fix the problem. Any help is greatly
appreciated! Thanks.

- Windows XP >> Windows XP FaxI have a Sony TR2 laptop. This machine only has 2 x USB and no serial or
parallel ports. Is this why the category "Ports" does not appear in Device
Manager?
I have set up a dialup connection and the modem works fine that it connects
to the internet. But when I use Windows XP fax, there is no connection and
I cannot send fax.
When I check on the properties of "fax" in Control Panel, the "Ports" tab is
NOT there. Is this the reason why I cannot send fax?
Appreciate any help because I really need to have the fax function. Thank
you.

- Windows XP Support >> Uninstalling SQL Server 2005Hello,
I installed MS Accounting 2008 some time ago which I never used so I
uninstalled it. Now I also see something called MS SQL Server 2005, Native
Client and VSS Writer. I have the feeling they were installed alongside MS
Accounting 2008, but don't want to make a mistake if they have some kind of
other use on my PC. I also see "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable".
Could they have some other use? My PC has MS Office on it and we use email,
but not much more than that in terms of business type software.
Thanks.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Capturing video from Instant TVI am trying to capture video in movie maker from my ADS Tech Instant
TV. I can capture the video easily but there is no sound. I was
wondering if this is a problem with movie maker or the ADS device.
Instant TV comes with a ULead program that allows capture in various
formats, mainly to create dvd's. That program captures video and sound
and creates a dvd that plays in the computer or with the tv dvd
player.
The ulead program can capture as an avi file that imports to movie
maker but there is quality lost and other problems in the conversion.
The sound is missing in the movie maker capture both in the preview
box and in the resultant wmv file.
This appears to be a simple thing and the the instant tv box works
with other programs. movie maker recognizes the picture so why no
sound
Any suggestions

Windows XP >> keeping internet connection when in standby
Hi,
Windows XP silently disconnects any active connections before entering
standby. When the computer resumes from standby, you must manually
reconnect any remote access connections before you can use them.
This behavior is by design.
Thanks for using Microsoft News Group!

- Windows XP Support >> Data TravelerI recently purchased a new computer for my work. I finished installing
everything and used my 1GB (Kingston) data traveler to transfer files from my

Now that I have entered a password on my computer it seems that I can't used
my data traveler any more as it says that the administrator denies me access
to it. I'm the administrator of this computer, so why can't I access the data
on my data traveler? Help please.
