- Windows XP Security >> RE: System 32 "Shared Task Scheduler": know this task object or other?McAfee System Guard Protection asked me if I wanted to accept:
User_Feed_Synchronization-{30E3CCD7-52BB-4824-88BD-BB5076DAAD79}.job
which is apparently a "task object" (I think?) under C:WINDOWS\Tasks\ and
having to do with the process System 32\svchost.exe version 5.1.2600.2180,
"Shared Task Scheduler".
(1)What is this? I said no I don't accept, because I didn't do anything new,
didn't know what new task was needed, but is it needed? (2) Then I was
surprised the McAfee report/log noted my nonacceptance as a system guard
-change in future behavior... Can anyone clear this up? Thank you.

- Windows XP >> svchost questionAbout 2 weeks ago many of our Clients starting experiencing computer
slowdowns, lockups, Outlook freezing etc. When I look at the process
running on these problematic computers, svchost is always taking up at least
100MB of memory... The services it is controlling are
AudioSrv, BITS, CryptSvc, Dhcp, dmserver,
EventSystem, helpsvc, HidServ, lanmanserve
lanmanworkstation, Netman, Nla, RasMan,
Schedule, seclogon, SENS, ShellHWDetection
TapiSrv, Themes, TrkWks, W32Time, winmgmt,
wuauserv
The only thing new in our environment is WSUS and configuring a few users to
the newly revived Microsoft Update ...
Has anyone seen any issues surrounding these services that might explain
what is happening in our environments... this is an issue that is being seen
in numerous locations and more than one domain...
Thanks in advance

- Windows XP Hardware >> Sound help!Just recently my sound has stopped working. I will play a
sound in any program and it just sounds a little fuzzy as
if nothing is playing. I have checked in the advanced
section and all of my mute boxes are unchecked. I have
tried a bunch of other little things but nothing seems to
work. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

- Windows XP Hardware >> Sound TroubleshootingMy computer does not have sound at the moment. When I attempt to open the volume control, a message pops up saying "There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel" etc. However, my sound devices are installed and read as working properly. Any advice on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

- customize >> slipstreaming xp corporate files inquiryIs there a list kept somewhere that indicates what files are compatible with
svcpack.inf?
I slipstreamed all "critical" updates and hotfixes current as of today, but
I also combined the "recommended" updates as well.
Windows Media Player 9 doesn't seem too friendly as an error during XP
installation pops up saying system restore won't work if the "original"
windows media player (assuming its 8) isn't installed first, and that WMP9
should be installed separately.
Another error popped up defining the uses of switches which I was already
using: ie)
[SetupHotfixesToRun]
update.exe -q -n
Q330994.exe /Q:A /R:N
Q819696.exe /Q /O /N /Z
/Q - Quiet mode
/Q:A - Administrator Quiet mode, which does not display any dialog boxes to
the user
/R:A - Always restart
/R:N - Never restart
/R:S - Silent restart
Since I know what these switches mean already, then I need to know what
updates will work and which ones won't.
Having a list of which updates are and are not compatible would sure be nice
for my WinXP Pro SP1 package.

- Windows XP Setup >> XP SP2 Security Warning questionI have yet to find the option in the security settings to disable this

- Windows XP Network >> Network works, but can't "see" routerXP Pro
Though my network works fine, my desktop can't see my netgear router
(RP614).
I have a simple network: I have DSL service. My desktop, notebook, and
printer server are connected by wire to my Netgear router.
Everything works fine. Both computers get on the Internet, and both
computers can print. (And I can scan to both comptuers.
I can log on to my router from my notebook, but I can't log on from my
desktop. ("Page cannot be displayed")
I can't ping the router from my desktop either.
Although I'm not really affected by this, as I can do all I want from the
desktop, it bothers me.
I spent a lot of time with Netgear on the phone, and they say its an
operating system problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Setup >> CREATING NEW PARTITIONI understand that I cannot create a new partition with Windows XP without
destroying what I already have in place or without purchasing 3rd party
software. This is my scenario ... My system came with everything
preinstalled, one hd, and one basic/primary partition for everything. I'm
wanting to create a new partition (logical drive) to maintain system and file
backups. I have another operating system that will automatically and safely
- non-destructively - create a partition within my current configuration to
install itself on (Linux). Hypothetical situation ... do you think that I
could feasibly install that product without autoboot sequence in order to
create the new partition; uninstall it, leaving the partition in place; then
reformat that new partition with XP through the Computer Manager tools in
order to create my desired logical drive/partition? Any advice or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP Network >> Remote Desktop/ Cannot ConnectHI, I am trying to setup RDT on a computer using XP Pro and connected via a
router. Using help I have enabled my computer to use the service but when I
try to connect to mine using a friends computer via either the web or the RDT
dialog box I cannot connect.
The friends computer also uses XP Pro and a router.
My IP is 86.139.91.xx
His IP is 82.18.68.xx
Both our sub masks are 255.255.255.0
I have tried pinging but that times out. I feel that if we can ping each
other RDT "might" work.
I hope someone can help as I have been on this for hours.
Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> Windows XP won't start. HELPWhen I turn on my computer Windows won't start. I get the Microsoft XP logo
at the beginning and then it goes to the blue screen with a small Windows XP
logo in the middle and then it stays like tat forever. I don't get any error
messages or anything that can tell me what's wrong.
I tried restarting my computer in Safe Mode but it does the same thing. I
also tried the different options in F8, all unsuccessful. It just gets stuck
on that screen.
Can someone tell me how I can fix this without having to use the recovery
disk? I don't want to loose any files. They are very important to me.
Thank you

- Windows XP >> Stuck in LoopI need to reinstall the OS. I want to do a clean install
and I get stuck in a loop during setup when asked which
partition to install to (I currently only have 1). I
have the choice of deleting the partition or creating a
new partition. The option to create does not do anything
and I cannot create a new partition. If I try to delete
the existing partition, setup tells me that I cannot do
this because there are temporary setup files on the
partition. I cannot/don't want to install 2 OS on the
same partition. How do I get out of this loop and wipe
my machine to reload?
Thanks,

- Windows XP Security >> How to access old account after re-installI had a power cut which needed a Windows re-install.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Movie Maker problemsI am utterly disgusted with your product "Windows Movie Maker". I don't know,
neither do I care, what version it is. It came with XP Home I purchased this
year. After encountering extreme problems which had me reboot, lose projects,
system crashes etc. I refuse to be polite to whoever is responsible for
creating this software.
Whenever I try to open a project, the process of "checking project files"
either takes incredibly long (I'm talking about hours) or freezes.
When I import movies, it freezes.
When I save movies, it freezes or shuts down.
Every click and every step takes 10 seconds on average before the click
results in something, and by something, I also mean crashes.
When playing the time line, it lags and screws up the synchronization of
audio and video.
Frames are skipped or freeze.
Sometimes it just shuts down.
When previewing clips, the player turns black.
And NO, I am not going to reduce quality or remove effects. I demand
perfection from what I spent money on. I don't spend hours or, due to the
"speed" of this program, entire nights, making a video just to reduce it to
mediocre Youtube material. Fix it or refund my purchase of this horrible OS.
Oh btw, the "opening project files" advanced by an amazing 5% since I
accessed this newsgroup. How big is the project you ask? Hmm, by now it's 1
minute and 40 seconds. Ever since opening the project, more than an hour has
passed and only half of the checking process has finished so far.

- Windows XP >> System does not boot - URGENTHi,
I have an XP system that suddenly will not boot up. It gets as far as
the Windows XP screen, then goes blank, and nothing. I tried to boot
into safe mode and it stopped at the file MUP.SYS. I booted into the
recovery console using the WinXP CD and tried a chkdsk /R c:\. THis
finished after quite some time and did not help. I then tried to
replace MUP.sys with the one from the CD. Same. Then I tried DISABLE
MUP and then it stopped at the file right before MUP (NDIS.sys).
Reinstallation is not an option here. Any ideas on what I can do? Is
there a way to run sfc from the recovery console?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Support >> device error code 12:I am trying to fix a problem on a Dell Inspiron 5000e with SP2. The machine
keeps coming up with the below error for different devices. Removing and
reinstalling the driver for a Xircom ethernet card fixed that problem, but
when swapping that card for a Netgear WG511(v1) wireless card, the error
comes up again and I can't get rid of it.
This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)
Apparently this setup (ACPI) doesn't support manual allocation of IRQ and
I/O addresses, so how can I fix this?

- Windows XP >> Network ProblemI have a small two-computer network, with each computer running Windows =
XP SP1 (one computer is XP Home, the other XP Professional). The XP Home =
computer is running the free Zone Alarm 3.7.202 without a problem. If =
the XP Professional Computer is running the built-in Windows firewall, =
everything is fine at first--each computer can see the other--then a few =
minutes later, trying to reach the XP Home computer from the XP =
Professional one results in the message=20
An error occurred while reconnecting Z: to \\Eileen\C
Microsoft Windows Network: the local device name is already in use.
The connection has not been restored.
If instead of the built-in firewall, Zone Alarm is running on the XP =
Professional machine, that message appears immediately.
I did a Google search on "the local device name is already in use" and =
found a couple of sites that suggested I use a different drive letter =
for mapping. So I changed the mapping from Z: to X: with the same =
results.
Each machine can Ping the other without a problem. Any suggestions as to =
what might be wrong or how to fix it? Suggestions on a more appropriate =
newsgroup for the problem are fine too.

- Windows XP >> Backup Profiles without Long LogonHi
We use roaming profiles for all our desktop users, but have a couple of
laptop users who work off-line and require access to my docs etc whilst away
from the office.
We tried using offline files but found that the users had slow logons and
logoffs and slower access to the files than regular users. Is there an
alternative method to backup their profiles to the server without using
Offline Files?
Thanks
