My son has a 1.53g AMD Athlon pc running Win XP Home
The Bios program from the AMI web site shows the motherboard/chipset as follows
ID String = 62-0415-001131-00101111-071595-SiS730
Motherboard Manufacturer Code = 1131 ELITGROU
Chipset SiS730 Rev
Bios Date 04/15/0
When purchased I believe this PC had on-board graphics but a Hercules 3D Prophet (Kyros series) PCI graphics card was installed some time back and appears to function correctly
He has now purchased a GeForce FX5200 AGP card made by Sparkle that he would like to install and this is where the problem is....
The drivers for the Hercules card were removed using device manager, the pc shut down and the card removed from the PCI slot. The new AGP card was installed in the vacant AGP slot and the pc re-booted. On start up no new hardware was found as I assumed would be the case? Any attempt to load the drivers from the accompanying cd results in the msg - An unsupported operation was attempted. Clicking OK results in an error msg - MFC Application has encountered an error and needs to close etc. et
I have gone into the Bios/Set-up (Version 1.21.86) at the start-up screen and on the menu if I select PCI/Plug & Play Setup I can/have tried changing the Primary Graphics Adapter from PCI to Onboard AGP. I'm not sure if this is the correct thing to do but either way it makes no difference to the new AGP card
Any ideas on how/if I can get this new AGP card working would be a real bonus!

I now the address for this key in the registry, which is:

The first time I looked it up the dword value was 0. I then tried to
changed it to 1, but still that did`nt work, then 2 and 3 but nothing semm
to help enabling it again.
Anyone now the solutions for this matter?

- Windows XP >> Unable to open IEWhen I attempt to open IE (vers 5.5) (have AOL 9.0 as Net
connection) the status (?) bar (at bottom left which tells
you if document is done or not) flickers
"toolbar2.i-lookup.com." Then after about 30 seconds the IE
window closes. This sounds like a spyware or virus problem
but I already ran Ad-aware and a virus check program on my
Sony VAIO and cleaned suspect files. Anyone know how I can
restore my IE access to normal?

I have a problem to get Software Restriction Policies (SRP) to work as
expected. I'm administering a number of computers at a school and I use SRP
to prevent use of disallowed software. My problem is that I find SRP to
behave very peculiar; the way that I think would be the obvious way for it
to work doesn't at all give the expected result. Of course I may have
totally misunderstood things but in that case I hope for a clarification
here.
Our environment is:
- Windows 2000 Server with AD, US version
- Windows XP Pro, Swedish version
I've read a lot of postings in the Microsoft Usenet groups and it seems like
there might exist a bug in Windows XP that was fixed in sp2 that's
concerning Netware shares (Q815471). We don't have any such shares, at least
not as long as they aren't shared as such by default, so I'm not sure
whether this bug applies to us.
Now to a description of the problem; the problem is that the user can't run
applications that should be runable, i.e. the user gets a message stating
that the application was prevented to start due to software restrictions
policies.
Our default policy configuration is to disallow running of applications,
then we specify exactly which applications and in which paths applications
are allowed to run. Our policy list is as follows:

The polices are distributed using GPO in the Active Directory.
The strange thing is that some applications installed in "Program Files"
runs perfectly e.g. Office but other third party applications can't start
and I can't figure out why. There are some MS applications, e.g. Notepad,
that doesn't start either.
I've studied the document "Using Software Restriction Policies to Protect
Against Unauthorized Software"

to configure SRP and in the Troubleshooting section it says that a denied
SRP should be logged in the system event log but this doesn't occur so I can
't get any information here, at least I can't find any log records. Do I
need to do anything special to enable this logging?
Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.

folder pop at logon... I think it have something to do
with a spyware call "My fast access" that can't be
deleted with ad-aware 6 with the last update.... Or it's
with the installation of direct X... I don't know. If
someone can help me, it would be great :)

- Windows XP >> Software Not Genuine errorRecently, I have disjoined three computers form a labbing domain prior to
reinstalling the DC (2003SP1-ent.ed.). Initially there were RPC and
authentication errors after the installation. During the troubleshooting of
those problems, the three labbing machines were again joined, disjoined and
rejoined to the domain. However, on ALL three of the domain member machines,
I received a pop-up notifying me that the software was not genuine and that I
may have been a victim of counterfeit software! Two of the machines are OEM
installs and the third one is from a TechNet+ license. Also, the Win2003 DC
is from a TechNet+ license and it has been activated each time I installed it
for labbing purposes.
If I restore the machines (rstrui.exe) OR disjoin them from the domain yet
again, the non-genuine warning goes away and the machines' full functionality
is restored.
Because of this behaviour, is the error indicating an apparent problem with
the SERVER's license and not the member machines???
How can I investigate this further?

I have NO idea but my programs list shows everything, EVERYTHING as Empty
Start
All Programs
Any/All folders you arrow over them and it shows a sub folder as (Empty)
If I want to start a program I have to go thru My Computer, C:, Program Files
How can I re-associate/teach Windows to learn the paths so that they will
re-populate the paths?
And I have tried Restore Point but it does not re-associate the paths.

- Windows XP Network >> Network works, but no internetHere is the situation: We hooked up 9 new PCs with WIN XP PRO into and
existing network at a hospital. We used a Linksys 16-port Switch. There are
three existing PCs (all have Win XP Pro as well) on the network which brings
us to a total of 12 PC in all. The issue we are having is this. The 9 New
PCs, when hooked into the network and given the proper IP, gateway, DNS, etc.
will network and see one another and share data fine. However, They will not
access the internet and they will not see the other three existing PCs that
were previously on the network. They all have the same workgroup name, and
are on the same IP sequence, etc. Here's another thread for you. The three
existing PCs will see each other, access the internet, and seem to have no
problems. Now, we have tried different IP sets, Different Workgroups,
different switches, different Network cards, all with the same outcome. What
could we be overlooking here and what else can we try? Thanks for your time.

i attempted to reinstall the xp operating cd from dell... the first screen
stops me - with an error message - "setup cannot continue because the version
of windows on your computer is newer thane the version on the cd (dell).. the
versions should be one in the same... is there a way around this problem?? is
the reason that the computer's version is newer related to new upgrades from
microsoft?? thank for any assistance...

I wentto add and remove programs and clicked on the programs that i wanted to
uninstall and it says cannot open logfile, and if i click on remove it wont
take any action, i also i have file in my hard drive that i wasnt using any
more wich was yahoo messenger and some of the files still remain, when i
tryied to delet it it comes up with an error saying cannot delet even tho
i've unintsalled it add and remove programs

Windows XP Update >> XP SP 2 Access Denied
I am getting an "access denied" message when I try to install Windows XP
Service Pack 2 on several PCs in our company. I followed the instructions in
KB Article 307410, but I still get "access denied" about half-way through the
SP2 installation.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My system was infected with the Alemon trojan. I was able to delete it.
All subsequent virus scans are showing up clean. This program changed my
wallpaper to an .html file. I deleted the file, however now I just get a
white background. I'm unable to change my wallpaper to anything else. I've
looked at several instructions, but don't find the registery entries they are
talking about.
Can anyone provide me with some help on how I can change my wallpaper again.

see windows partition and read from it (NTFS) along with another two FAT32
Partitions, is there anyway i can see linux partitions from windows? either

I ran avg antivirus. It found like fifty infected
files and healed them. No change in performance. One
file cannot be fixed: "system32\msconfig35.exe."
Can I grab that file from another computer and replace
it? I know it's an important one. It says the other
files are healed.
Also can't open task manager. Have done proceedures
reccomended to other people for this; no change.
Also when I shut down, comp says trying to shut down
Wnd RNAmin. WHAT IS THAT?????

not passed the windows logo testing. You then recieve the option to proceed
anyway or to stop, i choose to proceed and as far as i can tell it has worked

because something was left behind in the registry from the older version that
I had removed. So I stupidly deleted a couple of registry keys that looked
related to the software without documenting them (not just the tags, but the
folders with the long alphanumeric strings). Now when I try to install the
software it gives me an error. I ran system restore but the problem is still
there (I don't think it restored the registry keys I deleted). Is there a
way to install all of the default Windows SP2 registry keys or to download
and reinstall SP2 in general?
