- Windows XP Hardware >> CD Drive ErrorIf I insert a CD into the drive and it has AutoPlay it
opens and plays. But if I need to open the CD that is in
the drive manually to see what files it contains, I get
the error message that the drive in not accessible. When I
looked in the Properties on the Shortcut I see that the
Target location is F:\ and the Target is F:\, but when I
click on OK I get the message that F:\ is not a valid
string. When I click on Find Target I get a message that
the closest thing is a string that leads to a game I once
played. My E drive(DVD)and A drive work normally (the F
drive used to), and I'd like to fix this, but I don't even
know where to start. Can anyone help??? I hope my
explanation of this problem isn't too confusing.

- Windows XP >> Font SizeIn OE of IE 6 of Windows XP, if an e-mailis typed in

- Windows XP Support >> Missing Entire Media FileA couple days ago, I uninstalled Kazaa, but returned my media files to
the same location C:/Program Files/Kazaa/My Shared Folder because
thatâ??s where my media files pull from. I put in Kazaa in name only
to preserve the file path. However, I turned on my computer (after
running Microsoft Anti-spyware and quarantining the "real" Kazaa), I
found kazaa(2) in place of my "dummy" Kazaa and my entire file was
gone.
Please help me, I need the files in there for my final project!

- Windows XP Network >> Mapping drives in XP on Win2003I have just installed a WIndows 2003 network (2003 server
with XP desktops). Then I mapped 4 drivers to all
workstations (they map fine), when you restart the
desktops the first 3 map fine and the last drive has
the "Red X" over it (and the message that not all netowrk
drives were mapped" on the task bar). BUT if you click on
the drive (or a program trys to access it) it really is
connected? Anyone every seen this, if so, how do I
correct?
Thanks,

- Windows XP Security >> DCOM event 10010I have windows XP service pack 1 and norton internet
security 2004 with all the updates.
When i connect to the internet I get Dcom Error 10010 ,
the server {SERVER NO} did not register within the
required timeout. After extesive research of my pc i have
traced the server to Symantec.securitycentre.SymWSCSVC
and Symantec.securitycentre.SymWSCSVC.1
This problem makes windows hang when i close the system
down and prevents me from connecting to messenger.
I have looked on every helpsite available. Symantec say
it an out of date DCOM on windows NT4. Well i don't have
windows NT4? And i have all the update for XP installed.
When i am not running Norton internet Security i do not
get the problem. Is there a fix for this apart from
chuking Norton when Service pack two comes out?
Please help,
Thankyou.

- Windows XP >> Need help adjusting the task bar?Hey all,
Yesterday, I found myself in a position I had to format and clean install XP
Pro SP2. I have since, got all my post SP2 updates.
I chose to show the quick launch , and have been putting some shortcuts on
it for my programs.
Somehow, I managed to get my taskbar to double heigth, where you see not
only the time, but the day and date below it as well. I prefer having it
just single heigth, where it only shows the time.
I unlock the task bar, and try to drag it down, but cannot seem to do so.
If, while holding the mouse button down and dragging it down, I move it far
enough, it basically dissappears from the screen, showing just a very small
part of the bar, just enough to grab it and drag it back up, to where it is
once again double heigth.
Any tips, on how I can get this back to where it was, would be greatly
appreciated!

- Windows XP Network >> Allow intranet, but intermittently allow/disallow InternetI have a small-business CPA customer with multiple Win XP Home (SP2) PCs
networked together via the usual router/switch configuration to allow file &
print sharing. Until recently, only 1 PC could access the Internet and that
was via dial, but they've "taken the plunge" and ordered DSL.
The owner is absolutely paranoid about security and is convinced that while
a PC is connected to the Internet, people could hack in and steal customer
financial and identity-type info. The longer the time the PC was connected,
the higher the risk. With dial, he felt he could control that by
restricting dial access to a single PC (with no customer data on the PC) and
allowing the dial session to last only as long as absolutely necessary.
Given this mindset, DSL has him real worried. I've explained about
firewalls (both hw & sw) and all the other ways of protection and he's
reluctantly agreed to allow all of his PCs to be able to access the
Internet.
However (and here's the problem), he still wants to limit the time the PC
has Internet access. He wants to have some kind of "switch" that a user
would turn ON or OFF to allow their PC to be able to access the Internet.
In other words, if the user is doing internal office work (which requires
access to other PCs or printers on the LAN), the "Internet switch" should be
OFF to not allow Internet access. When the user needs to do email or access
a web site, they would turn the switch ON, do the online activities, then
turn the switch OFF again. But the PC needs LAN access at all times.
I've tried to explain the folly of his "solution" and that keeping the
switch OFF by default would stop all Windows and anti-virus automatic
updates, but he wants to give it a try.
So does anybody know a technique or program that could do this? Since
turning the switch ON/OFF will happen multiple times per day on each PC, the
solution has to be something simple. I envision having to setup some sort
of BAT file that would issue the appropriate commands to turn the switch ON
or OFF. Just not sure if the "switch" is within TCP/IP, the router, or
what.
I done a lot of Googling and found some solutions for permanent
restrictions, but nothing that can be easily turned off and on. I'm looking
for help!

- Windows XP Setup >> can't install security update Q811114After reformatting my hard drive (to NTFS) and re-installing
WinXP Pro with Norton AV, Norton System Works 2003,

updates to download and install, but after installation of the
first two, installation of Q811114 slows to a creep and never

re-format and start over, or is there some conflict with Q811114
that can be resolved? Thanks for any help.

- Windows XP Update >> Server 2003 - Updates download but fail to installHi,
This is very odd, and just started happening today on multiple machines...
It is mostly with Windows Server 2003, but also applies to a Windows XP
box...
Windows Update fails on multiple systems after the update is successfully
downloaded. Here is what happens...
1. I download the updates.
2. I get "Updates were unable to be successfully installed messages".
3. I rerun Windows Update. The updates are missing from the Windows Update
(after I rerun Windows Update).
4. I Have to reboot. After reboot, the updates REAPPEAR in the Windows
Update list. I try to install, and the cycle starts over agiain with #1
above... they are downloaded, but do not install.
On windows XP Professional SP2 box. I got the SAME error as above (updates
failed to install after downloaded), but after the computer restart, they
then show as successfully installed (but how do I know for sure?). However
Security Update for Windows XP (KB917537) keeps showing over and over even
after successful installation. I have reinstalled that one 3 times and it
does not go away.
Interestingly, in the Server 2003 event logs, I get many of the following
error messages all in a row (like 20 or something)...
"The start type of the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service was
changed from auto start to demand start."
Anway, maybe there is a new problem out there with Windows Update...
Thanks!

- Windows XP >> Outlook Express & norton Jan 19th update problemIt is not my server and it is not my email being misconfigured. It
happened to my friend's and my PC's, xps, and we are each on different
servers. Our OE just began to spin and spin and would not receive nor
send. I wrote Norton 3 times about it, but get technicians from out of
this dear country who just say to try all their suggestions on Norton's
pages, which I had already done before I wrote them. And I tried their
ONE suggestion in their email back to me.
I do System Restore and then email works fine again. Why can't Norton
see there is a problem and fix it for us? My friend and I have nearly
a year to go on Norton, and now we can't do live update. I will not
disconfigure the Norton firewall and use the XP firewall because, as
you all say, it isn't the best one. Both my friend and I do not use
the block spam email feature.
I have seen many others complaining about this Norton problem, but no
answers yet. Please help as we would like to use our email. Our
internet email works just fine.

- Windows XP >> System Freeze After Critical Updates: XP HomeI posted this in the Windowsupdate group, but no useful replies yet:
I am having a problem with my daughter's computer:
AMD Duron 750 MHz
Gigabyte TNT2 M64 32 mb VideoCard
128 mb RAM
I did a clean install of XP Home in January of this year. The system has
run essentially flawlessly since then, with rare to non-existent crashes or
freezes.
She recently developed a problem where her MSN Profile wouldn't keep the
changes she applied. Probably a cookies issue. While I was at her
computer, I went ahead and applied all Critical Updates that had accumulated
over the last few months. They downloaded and installed uneventfully, with
normal boot-up afterwards.
From that point on, this system would totally freeze multiple times every
day. This would occur during normal usage, browsing the web, etc. Really
nothing exotic. The system would be totally responsive, with Ctrl+Alt+Del
not producing any effect. Have to power down to reboot. I was at the
system for about a half-hour, not doing anything even remotely demanding,
and encountered first-hand multiple lockups.
I found an updated video driver through Windows Update, and installed this
without any problem, hoping to resolve this problem, but no joy.
Fortunately, I had used DriveImage 2002 earlier this year, capturing the OS
partition from when the XP Install was completed, and all her usual
programs, NAV, Zone Alarm, etc. installed, and everything was running fine.
I restored this image uneventfully, and the system again ran beautifully.
I again let XP install all Critical Updates, and the previous freeze-ups
immediately recurred. I do not know which one(s) are causing this problem.
I re-ran DriveImage, and got her up and running again. But unless I can
identify where the problem is, I won't be able to apply Critical Updates and
keep her system up to date.
It seems clear to me that one or more of the Critical Updates is triggering
this problem. Any ideas or suggestions on which one(s) or whether or not
this problem has been identified, with a fix available, would be greatly
appreciated.
