- Windows XP Setup >> Start Up Error, syscpy.exeIt seems that I got a bug in my system that McAfee
cleaned up for me. Now every time I start up or reboot, I
get an error page that says " syscpy.exe has encountered
a problem and needs to close." All programs seem to be
operating normally, but this message informs me something
is not working correctly. Any suggestions would be
helpful.
Thank You in advance,

- Windows XP Security >> migrate.exe - Entry point not found (during SP2 update)Toward the end of the SP2 update, it stopped and gave me the error msg in my
subject line. The error msg then said "The procedure entry point GetIUMS
could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL". I ended up
having to restart to get out of the error msg. I then uninstalled the SP2 and
did a system restore. Any help on this error msg would be extremely helpful.

- Windows XP >> BAD_POOL_HEADER error after using DiscWizardI have recently used the Seagate DiscWizard software (by Acronis) to image
and clone my system. After running the clone for a few weeks I discovered
that NTbackup causes a BSOD (BAD_POOL_HEADER, Stop code 0x19, parameter 1 is
0x20). The problem is almost identical to that described in posting "backup
using shadow copy causes blue screen stop" by what
bobfnospam@duxsysnospam.com. If volume shadow copy is disabled, the backup
works properly.
I found that the problems with NTbackup could be fixed by using System
Restore after booting up the clone, to return to a checkpoint made before the
cloning (or imaging) operation. Pesumably, this resets something in the
registry or system files that has been corrupted by DiscWizard.
Unfortunately, I'm not convinced this is the only corrupted aspect of the
system though. Prior to using DiscWizard, my system has been stable for 6
months at least. After restoring the image, I have found other strange things.
For example, the system event log was truncated to the day before the image
was performed, where-as it previously went back to about Feb 2007. More
ominously, I now find that the system is inconsistently updating file access
times. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. It seems to be totally
random.
I continued working on the original clone for some weeks before I realised
there were problems, when I used NTbackup for the first time since cloning.
However, in tracking down the NTbackup problem, I also discovered that
indexing had been corrupted, system restore was dead, and the sound had gone.
I tried correcting these, but in the end found it was better to start over
again from the system image.
Now my system seems superficially OK, except for not updating the file
access times consistently. Can anyone suggest a fix for this problem?
Is there some utility (other than sfc) I can use to check my system is not
corrupted in some way? I would rather avoid a repair install. I only have a
slow dial-up, so re-downloading years of Windows updates is not an option!
Thanks for any advice...

- Windows XP >> close telnetI realize this isn't a python newsgroup, but this is mostly a windows
question....
Currently, I'm launching a telnet window with a python call like this:
TSS_Handle = subprocess.Popen("start telnet.exe -f " + TSS_Log_Path + "
localhost 6000", shell=True)
which is essentially the equivalent of typing
"start telnet.exe -f myLogFile.txt localhost 6000"
into a command window. The problem is that I can't close the telnet
session I create (with any conventional python methods that I know of).
Is there a way to close all telnet windows currently open or some
other method which will perform a telnet termination ?

- Windows XP >> BSOD Upon Restart/Shutdown - On Two Different PCs - HELP!!!I have had two of my HP Pavilion PCs recently (over the last two weeks) start
to have BSOD problems at restart/shutdown. I get the famous
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0x0A) error, with not much more info as far as the
driver issue, etc. Both machines exhibit the same error codes of memory.
This leads me to believe that some recent SW event on both machines occurred,
and not likely a HW issue. I have tried everything I can think of. In to
Safe mode. Disable all apps and services. Driver verification (which really
screwed my PC up enough that I had to recover a Norton Ghost image from 45
days ago. Same BSODâ??s continue to occur!! Even after a few times with the
old image restore, something in the system causes the BSOD. I have tried not
downloading updates from MS and Norton for my programs. I am so
frustrated!!! I see other folks here and there are having some problems with
this. Can anybody help me? Thanks in advance!!!

figure it out. Manual can show me how to reset the
defaults, but I am not that familiar with setting
defaults. Would appreciate any help. Thanx!

The following message then appears: svchost.exe - application error. The
instruction at "0x009996bc" referenced memory at "0x0000000". The memory
could not be "written". Click on ok to terminate the program. Click on
CANCEL to debug the program.

- Windows XP Network >> "disabled" Internet connection sharing is actually workingI have three computers using XP's internet connection

is however strange on one of the client computer that it
displayed a "disabled" internet gateway. When I tried to

still "disabled". It however can access the internet and
only that the window messenger in this machine cannot get
connected.
History on this machine is that I have tried to uninstall
the window messenger and outlook express and then
reinstall them again. Is these related with this strange
disabled ICS while I am still able to access the internet?

- Windows XP Network >> Direct Cable Connection Between XP and 98SEI have a relatively new desktop running Windows XP (Home
Edition). I also have an older laptop running Windows 98
(Second Edition). I am trying to set up a direct cable
connection between the two. I have set up similar
connections with the laptop before, but never with my desktop.
I tried to set up my desktop as the host, by creating an
"Incoming Connection" option in my "Network Connections"
Control Panel. I could not get this to work, however.
When I tried to connect my laptop as guest, it would say
that the Parallel cable on LPT1 was disconnected.
I then set up my laptop as the host, and created a "Direct"
connection to it through my "Network Connections" Control
Panel. When I connect in this way, the two computers do
connect, and I get an icon in my system tray telling me
the connection speed and bytes sent and received.
However, I then tried to access my laptop through my
desktop, and ran into troubles. I went to "My Network
Places", "Entire Network", "Microsoft Windows Network", and
finally to "Mshome" (this is the name of my workgroup).
When I double-click on "Mshome", I get an hourglass, and
finally get the following pop-up error box:
Microsoft Windows Network
"Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of
this server to find out if you have access permissions.
"The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available"
I have only one user account on each machine, and they are
both the same name (neither have password protection), so
don't think it's a username/permission problem, but I could
be wrong.
I then searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and found
Article 298804 stating that I should not have a firewall
set up (I originally did) to do direct cable connections.
However, I undid the option for that connection, and ever
restarted my desktop computer, but got the same result.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP >> Runtime Errors - What are these?I just purchased a new Dell 2.8 with Windows XP and this
is the most up-to-date and powerful computer I've owned
in my years of using windows and PCs, but for some reason
I keep getting Runtime errors when I browse the web. In
the last 30 minutes I've gotten "A RUNTIME ERROR HAS
OCCURRED. DO YOU WISH TO DEBUG? LINE: 1206 LENGTH IS
NULL OR NOT AN OBJECT" on one website. Then on other I
got, "Runtime error... LINE: 39 ...". It seems to happen
every 3 or 4 sites I click on with dozens of different
line numbers, and whenever I click to DEBUG them, I go
into some programming screen that is well beyond the
skills of mortal men. Does anyone have an idea why these
keep coming up on a new PC on a new Windows Operating
System? Thanks. Jeff

- Windows XP Update >> Windows Update headacheHello,
Windows Update has been running for several weeks now. It will get to about
46% complete, then I will get a pop up message from Norton Internet Security
showing that â??windows updateâ?? is trying to access my bank account number (it
will show the majority of the account numbers that I identified to the NIS
program to be on the watch for). Why does Windows (or Microsoft) need that
data? It also appears that Windows update is then proceeding to restart the
update because I blocked it from getting the bank account number. It starts
fast; slows down around 30% completes then wants the bank account number at
46% which I block from being transmitted. Are there simply a bunch of
different updates that I am getting, or is Windows starting the whole
process back up?
Thanks very much,
Scott Leslie
