- Windows XP >> Taskbar temporarily freezes and not visible during startup (XP)Hi-
I am running XP Pro SP2. When I boot up and the desktop appears, the
items in the bottom bar are not visible for about 30-60 seconds until
just before the boot process is complete. Specifically, the "Start"
button, the "Systray" items in bottom right corner, and the "Quick
Launch" items are all sort of boxed out - icons missing. When the
entire boot process is about to complete, they are the last things to
appear. My boot takes longer than it should (over a minute).
I have 2 GB RAM, running an Intel E4300 duo core. I do not think it
is hardware related, unless it is the hard drive, because I just built
a new system and transferred my hard drive - and the problem persisted
(previous system was Athlon XP2700, and the same exact thing happened
there). This Windows build was a clean install only 3 months ago, so
it's not a case of a whole lot of junk accumulating over the course of
years.
I have run Startup Inspector for Windows and the only things that
launch at startup are my soundcard driver (Delta 1010 LT), the video
control center (ATI Catalyst) and "ctfmon". Verified the same with
msconfig.
Any suggestions?
It's obviously not catastrophic, but I would like to fix whatever is
causing it.
Thanks!

- Windows XP >> Open window in details modeIs there some way that every time file/folder window opens it opens in the

I'm not referring to windows in Windows Explorer, but those such as when you
save a file from within an application, any application. The default is
"list" and I prefer "detail".
Thanks....

- Windows XP Support >> getting rid of something at startupI'm using Windows XP Home edition.
Recently, I was going to download a program from the web, but I changed my
mind. I said cancel before it was finished downloading.
Now, however, every time I boot-up my computer a window pops up asking me if
I wanted to continue downloading (or running) the same program. I went into
the Run menu and said "msconfig". Under the Startup tab I can see an entry
with the program's name.
I tried to remove that item by un-checking it. But the computer does not
like that because when I re-boot it goes into the
selective startup or diagnostic startup mode and asks me to undo the change
I made.
How do I get rid of that window popping up every time I boot-up. I think
there is also an entry in my registry. Do I need to go to
my autoexec.bat file and make changes there? How do I do that?
Thanks,
Please let me know if you need further information about my situation.

As you have noticed, Microsoft doesn't provide manuals with Office
anymore.
The most practical thing is to go buy a book. Look through the books
available at your local book store to find one you like. There are many
books available.
Alternatively, you can print and assemble your own manual by printing
Help Files, web pages, etc.

- Windows XP >> Re-UseHi All,
We have just started on a big rollout which involves a few thousand macines.
The old servers are 2000 with win2000 clients. Then new infrastructure is
2003 and XP.
Within the last few days a new directive has reached us where we need to
re-use as much old equipment as possible in order to achive cost savings.
Basically, the Legacy equipment need to meet a certain criteria before they
are allowed on the new system, they need to be under 2 year old, most of the
legacy kit to be retained are either printers, scanners, plotters and, in
some cases erganomic keyboard and mice.
What i would like to know is given the current build which has restrictions
etc, is there a way of finding out if the old legacy kit could be introduced
to the new infrastructure without installing any drivers?
Any information on the above would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards.

Hello:
I am seeing the following error messages in my Event Viewer:=20
Event ID 17 and Event ID 29.
Event ID 17 reads:
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
"
Time Provider NtpClient: An error occurred during DNS lookup of the =
manually configured peer 'time.windows.com,0x1'. NtpClient will try the =
DNS lookup again in 15 minutes. The error was: A socket operation was =
attempted to an unreachable host. (0x80072751)"
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
I sometimes need to reboot my Linksys router to restore the DSL =
connectivity. There is only one other PC on that router, and its time is =
the same as mine. When the connectivity is restored, I see both the =
above-mentioned error readings. Yet I dont see any reference in =
Evntviewer of another attempt at DNS Lookup after those 15 minutes =
expire.
I have tried manually synchronizing the time via Control Panel, but I =
keep getting an error reading. Generally , it doesnt state the anture of =
the error, but once it said something to the effect that:
""The peer's stratum is greater than the host's stratum"
or something to that effect.
Questions:
What is causing these error readings, and how might I remedy them?=20
If the time readings are corect, can I simply ignore these error =
messages?
Thanks in advance:

- Windows XP Setup >> Upgrade help please....Hi, I've attempted to install XP home on my mothers PC but have come across
a couple of glitches. The PC has a Cyrix 6x86MX Processor, 233MHz & 96 MB of
ram with a Socket 7 motherboard. Not Much I know but with a 8gig HD it did
install XP. PC had previously ran Win98 since 1999. At first all seemed ok
except no sound or modem.
In System/Hardware/Device Manager I get the following:
-CMI8330/C3D Audio Adapter (Code28)
Drivers not installed
(I get the above x4)
-Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem (Code 10)
Drivers cannot start
All the original driver discs are for Win95/98/NT. One of which is the
Systemboard disc containing PC CHillin 98. I recently upgraded my PC's
motherboard and was supplied with same disc however the 2002 edition.
Not looking for the computer to do wonders as Mum will only use it to surf
web and print out pics. Any advice would be welcome.

Rod

- Windows XP Network >> TCP/IP Socket ProblemWe are having a major problem. At the end of every day
(3pm to 7pm) we have users that get the error
message "Insufficient TCP sockets are available. Consult
your vendor's TCP/IP documentation to increase the maximum

This is mostly on the Compaq Evo D500 running Windows XP
Pro. Already have a open case with Compaq. They are at a
loss. I have tried to do a "netstat -p tcp -a", but when
the system gets the error, the system is locked up. Even
the mouse is locked. The only link I've found is

This only references Lotus Notes (Which is our Email
