- Windows XP >> MSPaint auto-resizeIn previous versions of mspaint (98se and earlier) mspaint.exe would prompt
for confirmation when pasting an image from the clipboard which was larger
(width and height) than the current open image. With XP, and possibly 2000,
the resizing happens automatically. I was wondering if there was any way to
disable the autoresize and have mspaint popup the confirmation dialog.

- Windows XP Network >> Internet Connection Sharing problemI have recently purchased a notebook and I am now trying to share the
Internet Connection on my desktop PC (which is directly connected to
the ISP) to the notebook via a hub.
While the Internet connection on my desktop PC has always been normal,
I found that I am unable to access SOME of the websites on my notebook.
For example, I can access www.google.com but not hk.yahoo.com. I would
access www.bbc.com but not www.nytimes.com.
I am also unable to access hotmail.com
I have already turned off the firewalls on both of the computers, and
have also tried to use Firefox instead of IE, but the situation
persists.
Do you have any clue about what's happening?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Digital CamerasI've recently bought a digital camera, and have installed the software that comes with the camera. However when I've gone to add the camera to the computer using the USB port it won't recognise the camera and says that the drivers aren't installed. I have contacted the makers of the camera but they as yet need to find an answer to my problem. Can anyone help please?

- Windows XP Update >> Vista froze at loading screen after 1/8/2008 Automatic updatesAfter applying the 1/8/2008 updates through Windows (Automatic) Update, Vista
restarted fine once as it configured the updates before the system restarted
and after the reboot. But from then on Vista froze when the loading screen
began to fade in (The loading bar with the green indicator). It never fully
faded in, it partially loaded the loading screen and froze about half a
second after it appeared.
This was fixed only until I used the "Start Windows with previously known
settings that worked" option in the Windows error boot prompt when loading
Windows again after a hard reset. I also had to Reinstall my Audigy sound
card driver, and my ICH9R southbridge drivers were also reinstalled by Vista
automatically after this.
It my system has since booted just fine, but I'm a bit worried, and I can
only assume it was the update that probably fudged something up with either
the boot process or the SATA/IDE drivers and/or the Southbridge chipset
drivers.
Just submitting this here incase there are any Microsoft, Windows, or
Windows Update developers in here. I couldn't find any other place in the
Microsoft web site where I can submit issues like this for inspection by the
Windows Update Team.

- Windows XP Support >> USB Device Not Recognized - is there a basic reset? My computer almost always fails to recognize USB devices when they are
plugged in to any of the USB ports. I get the "USB Device Not
Recognized" message. Some, I can get to work if I power down, plug in
the device, and reboot. Others, like a thumb drive that works fine on
several other computers, I can never get it to recognize. They alsways
show us as UNKNOWN DEVICE in the Device manager and no amount of
troubleshooting or web searching has helped. Device manager shows 5
root hubs, and 5 host controllers - but I can't tell what is what.
The USB wireless mouse/keyboard and printer work fine but no other
devices ever have worked without a hassle.
I've had these problems with 2 external drives, two different digital
cameras (Canon's help couldn't figure it out either), and flash drives
that work fine on similar computers.
Suggestions for a fix?
My Dell computer is 3GHz Pentium4, 2G RAM, Windows XP PRO, SP2.
TIA

Yes I should have known better but I plugged my Bluetooth USB dongle into my

I've even tried a system restore only to find I can't get it to do that

The Fast User Switching Compatibility service depends on

- Windows XP Setup >> Ad-Aware Doesn't UpdateThanks to PA Bear for link to this software. So far I have used this with
the May definitions issued with the original download.
Anyone know why this software won't get updates?
Configured to our internal proxy, it shows "retrieving" in the status box,
but doesn't get past 5%.
We have a 512Kb leased line so speed should not be an issue.

When the problem occurs, my ping is reported to gaming servers as way
to high and I get bumped off of the server, though my throughput is
truly ok...
It seems that there is something corrupt...
Here are the things I've already tried:
1. reinstalled XP from scratch... Probablem did not resurface until I
applied the latest critical updates. Microsoft ignores my information
and will not ackowledge the issue.
2. bought a totally different NIC, thinking maybe it was the onboard
ethernet controller.
3. run network without router connected directly to the cable modem.
4. did a traceroute to 127.0.0.1 and saw the same results
intermittantly.
5. do a ping, and it reports negative numbers as the max ping time, and
millions for the average.
6. updated all NIC drivers.
7. ran with and without microsoft's firewall.
8. ran it without any other programs loaded or running (again, note it
did not resurface in a fresh install until the critical updates were
applied).

- Windows XP >> How to get (in Touch with Pegasus re) Help with XOSLPegasus,
Please help me with this installation opf XOSL as you offered previously:
>If this was my machine then I would get a free copy of a boot
>loader called XOSL. I would then do this:
- Create a 15 MByte logical partition at the far end of the disk.
- Install XOSL there.
- Clone the existing WinXP installation to your spare partition.
- Add the two OSs to the XOSL menu.
- Password-protect your own WinXP installation in XOSL.
- Selectively hide various partitions from each other.
As a net result would get two completely independent and
mutually invisible OSs, one of which is password protected.
There are a few gotchas in this method. Post again for
further details if you decide to follow this path

- Windows XP Network >> Networking Troubleshooter contradicts Internet Explorer TroubleshoHi there,
I receive a "The page cannot be displayed" message (because the proxy server
was down, but that is another story). I started the Internet Explorer
Troubleshooter within the Support Center. I told it "Yes, I've tried several
different Web sites and I cannot view any of them" and I told it to
Investigate. The investigation result is that it cannot ping the default
gateway. However, the Networking Troubleshooter shows that the
DefaultIPGateway test passed. The results are somewhat contradictory. Huh?

still powered up I get a message something like this "The 'generic hard

have no program running at the time. The only way I can remove is to shut
down the computer and unplug and then restart the computer. Very time
consuming. Any solution?

Hi
You can trace which registry key is causing the trouble using the
setupapi.log in the windows folder (this log file is updated during
a service pack installation).
Here is a previous post about this:
From: <stephensrob1@hotmail.com>
Subject: XP SP2 "Access Denied" & the Fix
Date: Sat, 14 Aug 2004 08:22:57 -0700
Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
<quote>
As with SP2 RC2, I am having the same problem with the GA
release of SP2. "Access Denied" during installation.
This is error can be worked around by reading the
setupapi.log under the windows directory. I am
posting this to see if others are having the problem. For
some reason several registry keys related to windows media
player and a few others do not have any permissions set
for admin and system.
Specifically the following need to have permissions set to
full control for admin & system:
HKCR/vnd.ms.radio
IP6FwAPI.NetFirewallV6Manager
HKCR/WMPlater.OCX/EditFlags
HKCR/Software/Classes/UICTL* may vary
HKCR/Software/Classes/ADDC* may vary
you may have others so check the log for "Unable to delete
registry , Access Denied"
You may need to go thru the install a few times, as you
may fix one set, the next time you run it you may
encounter a new set. The best thing to do is check the
first 3 listed above and the set full control on
permission to HKCR/Software/Classes and its child objects
for Admin and System only.
</quote>
The above might be a very laborious if there are several registry
keys that have a permission issue. In that case, it would be
better to reset the security settings back to the defaults for
all registry keys.
More here on how to do that:
How To Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313222
If you only want to reset the registry permissions,
add this to the secedit command line:
/areas REGKEYS
