Windows XP MovieMaker >> Help Me Its Urgent!!!! It used to be that an MPEG-2 codec that worked OK with Movie Maker was one
way to go forward, but that hasn't turned out to be a successful path for
most.... so conversion from MPEG-2 to AVI is your best approach.

But, as you say, you need the time to do it.

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Help Me Its Urgent!!!! ... and the time to do the conversion depends on the codec you choose for
the new AVI file... the table on the Importing Source Files > Video >
Recorded TV shows the time it took for me to convert the same file using 10
different codecs - from a low of 12 minutes to a high of over 4 hours...

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Help Me Its Urgent!!!! WMM will hang or freeze with just about any mixed format. It will do the same
with like formats also! For simple small projects, i find if you save small
pieces to your working folder each time you add to the timeline you can
eventually finish a project. Lay to much on it and it will freeze just about
every time. And yes codecs seem to be the culprit, but which ones I am not
sure either. Edit the length of an audio clip and it will freeze every time!
I am running a custom built for video beefcake hyperthreader with more memory
etc. than WMM should ever require and it still "hangs". As suggested in other
messages, save yourself the frustration and move on to other software. And
just another small note---hyperthreaders--not all video compilation software
out there is compatable, but have fun!!!!
