Windows XP Network >> XP IP issues Hi all,

I have got a real strange on here for you all...

One of the machines (WinXP SP1) on our network is having issues obtaining an
IP from the DHCP, nor ping the DHCP server works. The DHCP server is up and
running because all other machines on the network are fine. Here is what I
have tried so far.

1) Assigning a manual IP. Failed to ping the DHCP.
2) Tested the network cable with a testing kit for belkin. Cable is fine.
All the strands match up okay.
3) Switched ports on the switch. Failed.
4) Uninstalled the drivers, then reinstalled. This worked until a couple of
reboots later, then it failed again.
5) Disabled the onboard nic and installed a new pci nic that I know works
because it was in another machine and worked fine. This failed. The nic is
installed okay but it too cannot get an IP.
6) Reinstalled XP, this was okay for a while and then the a couple of days
later it started to fail to obtain an IP again.

The only thing I think it maybe is something on the computer (virus
maybe) that is screwing with something!

Any ideas?

Cheers

Did you do a clean re-install of XP, or an in-place re-install?

A clean re-install would erase all existing files, so I assume that
you did an in-place re-install.

An in-place re-install preserves many existing files, so it won't
clean up viruses, spyware, etc. Run full scans with up-to-date
antivirus and spyware removal programs.

If the computer has XP Service Pack 2, use this command to reset
TCP/IP:

netsh winsock reset catalog

If the computer has XP RTM or Service Pack 1, follow these steps,
taken from Microsoft Knowledge Base article 811259:

1. Backup and delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

2. Reboot

3. Open the network connections folder, right click your network
connection, and click Properties.

4. Click Install | Protocol | Add.

5. Click "Have Disk...", type "\windows\inf" in the box, and click
OK.

6. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click OK.

7. Reboot.

Windows XP Network >> XP IP issues Hi,

It was a clean install. I formated the disk and started from scratch. I
did managed to solve it in the end by updating the via 4-1 drivers. I don't
know how this worked but it did! I shall remember these options though if
it happens again.

Cheers,

Tristan

Windows XP Network >> XP IP issues Hi again,

Okay, the problem came back again this morning. I tried the tasks below to
reinstall/reset the TCP IP settings but this did not work. I have even
scanned the computer with SpyBot to see if there was any dodgy spyware
installed but it only found 3 things which were negligible objects.

I basically reinstalled the VIA chipset drivers twice and then the network
connection began to work again.

This is such a strange problem. I did test it to see if it was working
yesterday morning, and it was. This morning the user logged on and then he
said he could not connect to the network. He did manage to logon to the
domain though. This makes me think he might have something dodgy running in
his profile?

Cheers,

Tristan
