- Windows XP >> My Documents - repostHi,
Is each user account supposed to have its own private My Documents folder? I
thought this was the case, but when I created a new user account, it
displayed the same files in My Documents and had the same privileges to
those files as the original user account.
To clarify (I hope) ...
I had an existing user account -- User1/Password1, which everyone in the
office used. I wanted to keep the settings for that account, but make its
files private for one particular person and create a separate account for
everyone else.
I renamed the User1/Password1 account and password to
PrivateAccount/PrivatePassword and then created a new account with the
original username and password (User1/Password1). When I opened the "new"
general purpose account (User1/Password1) and looked in My Documents,
however, I could see (and read/write/delete) the same files as I thought
were now only going to be available to the PrivateAccount/PrivatePassword
account.
Could someone please clarify this for me and/or suggest a better way to have
a private folder / private files for one particular user on a computer
shared by a number of people?
Thank you.

- Windows XP Security >> Firewall and Anti Virus problemI have to have Symantec Client Security Firewall/anti-virus on my PC since it
is the same as what is on our PCs at work. Don't know what happened but the
Windows firewall and AV came back on and I can't turn them off. I am an
Adminuser on the system and even logged on using the "ADMIN" user ID. I can
get into the Security Center fine but when I select the firewall the options
are "greyed out", I can't select to turn it off, or on for that matter. It
tells me taht I have 2 firewalls running but the recommendations are not
there either. Tried disabling stuff using the Sercives.msc option, but that
didn't help.
Can anyone advise me what to try next. System performance is suffering.
Thanks

I am trying to prestage account for deployment. I get the GUID

ignores the prestaged account that I had setup for it. I doubled checked the

- Windows XP >> I have had enough of this CRAP! I reformat and still have the same trouble!!!!!!My previous posts were about a problem with Windows Explorer, and not
being able to use the directory tree in the left pane, after it's been
open for a while.
After getting some ideas about what the problem might be, I
reformatted the HD today and started to reinstall things. Would you
believe that in the midst of some of the preliminary installs, from
files on a DVD.............. I GOT THE SAME FREAKING PROBLEM WITH
WINDOWS EXPLORER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I click on the folders in the directory tree, they won't open, I
get a message saying the path statement is wrong and the files aren't
available. When I close Explorer and start a new instance of it, it
works for a while then does the same damned thing.
I would sure appreciate anyone's help at this point. I don't intend to
waste any more time installing apps until this thing is fixed once and
for all.
The OS is XP Pro, the machine is a Gateway, with a 120GB HD, 1GB RAM,
Soundblaster Audigy card, NVIDIA ti 4600 graphics card, Sony DRU 500

Thank you ..... I am about to go back to my old Athlon 1.8 Ghz machine
that never gave me any of this crap.

Windows XP Network >> XP IP issues
Hi all,
I have got a real strange on here for you all...
One of the machines (WinXP SP1) on our network is having issues obtaining an
IP from the DHCP, nor ping the DHCP server works. The DHCP server is up and
running because all other machines on the network are fine. Here is what I
have tried so far.
1) Assigning a manual IP. Failed to ping the DHCP.
2) Tested the network cable with a testing kit for belkin. Cable is fine.
All the strands match up okay.
3) Switched ports on the switch. Failed.
4) Uninstalled the drivers, then reinstalled. This worked until a couple of
reboots later, then it failed again.
5) Disabled the onboard nic and installed a new pci nic that I know works
because it was in another machine and worked fine. This failed. The nic is
installed okay but it too cannot get an IP.
6) Reinstalled XP, this was okay for a while and then the a couple of days
later it started to fail to obtain an IP again.
The only thing I think it maybe is something on the computer (virus
maybe) that is screwing with something!
Any ideas?
Cheers

Did you do a clean re-install of XP, or an in-place re-install?
A clean re-install would erase all existing files, so I assume that
you did an in-place re-install.
An in-place re-install preserves many existing files, so it won't
clean up viruses, spyware, etc. Run full scans with up-to-date
antivirus and spyware removal programs.
If the computer has XP Service Pack 2, use this command to reset
TCP/IP:
netsh winsock reset catalog
If the computer has XP RTM or Service Pack 1, follow these steps,
taken from Microsoft Knowledge Base article 811259:
1. Backup and delete the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
2. Reboot
3. Open the network connections folder, right click your network
connection, and click Properties.
4. Click Install | Protocol | Add.
5. Click "Have Disk...", type "\windows\inf" in the box, and click
OK.
6. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click OK.
7. Reboot.

Windows XP Network >> XP IP issues
Hi,
It was a clean install. I formated the disk and started from scratch. I
did managed to solve it in the end by updating the via 4-1 drivers. I don't
know how this worked but it did! I shall remember these options though if
it happens again.
Cheers,

Windows XP Network >> XP IP issues
Hi again,
Okay, the problem came back again this morning. I tried the tasks below to
reinstall/reset the TCP IP settings but this did not work. I have even
scanned the computer with SpyBot to see if there was any dodgy spyware
installed but it only found 3 things which were negligible objects.
I basically reinstalled the VIA chipset drivers twice and then the network
connection began to work again.
This is such a strange problem. I did test it to see if it was working
yesterday morning, and it was. This morning the user logged on and then he
said he could not connect to the network. He did manage to logon to the
domain though. This makes me think he might have something dodgy running in
his profile?
Cheers,
Tristan

- Windows XP Network >> Discover network shortcuts on PC'sWhen we move shared data from an old server to a new server, we need a method
to discover shortcuts on a network. This is with the aim in mind of providing
seamless transition for a customer when we move their data. Itâ??s easy enough
to remap known drives in logon scripts but to avoid problems weâ??ve recently
had when weâ??ve done this kind of work we need a method to discover user based
shortcuts that have direct unc paths to shares (rather than mapped drive
based shortcuts, which should still work).
The ability to search a userâ??s profile (but not temporary internet files and
temp locations) for .LNK files may be the way to go but if you can find some
information out â?? maybe a product â?? that can satisfy that requirement that
would be great thanks.
Ideally customers should be using DFS but not many have it setup.

- Windows XP Support >> International characters have been replaced. From Greek to CyrilliHi,
In Internet Explorer and Windows the Greek text has been replaced by Cyrillic.
Iâ??m running Windows XP Professional Greek. When I visit web pages written in
Greek the characters appear in Cyrillic. If I change the encoding to Greek
(ISO) then they are corrected for that page, but itâ??s not possible to keep
repeating that task every time you go to another webpage. What I noticed is
that after changing the encoding to Greek (ISO) and moving to another webpage
the encoding has also changed back to Greek (Windows), hence it always
defaults to it, regardless if auto-selection is enabled or not. When I first
open IE it has defaulted to Greek (ISO), thus the first page (www.in.gr)
appears in Greek text. When I click on a link, it changes to Greek (Windows).
The problem isnâ??t limited to Internet Explorer 7, Help Center some windows
and popup menus with Greek text are also affected. Iâ??ve used scannow but it
didnâ??t correct it. Iâ??ve used Advanced Registry Tracer to track changes to
the registry. The only, I think, relevant changes done in the registry at the
following keys:
1) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-436374069-220523388-682003330-1004\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Cached
2) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-436374069-220523388-682003330-1004\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop

4) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-436374069-220523388-682003330-1004\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\International
Also in IE under Tools, Internet Options and Fonts, the Language script is
defaulted to Cyrillic. If I change it to Greek it reverts back to Cyrillic
once the Fonts window closes.
Iâ??ve uploaded some images so you can get a better idea of the problem.

- Windows XP >> Problem with Task SchedulerProblem with Task Scheduler
I have been using windows task scheduler successfully for about a
month. I was scheduling the running audio flies which were recording of
my voices. I just tried to add another task. I start to put in the
password. Once I put in the first letter of the password the next
button fades out. It stayed faded even after I put in the password
twice. Then I get a message saying that the task most likely won't
run but I could try again but I need to be careful about the task I
choose.
The scheduler worked up until that point. Does anyone have any idea
what I am doing wrong?
