Windows XP >> sp2 installed turns off Windows Firewall Is that OK? Is it intentional? Is it needed?

What does Microsoft have to say about the many users who are asking how to
turn on the firewall?

If it was a mistake, why doesn't Microsoft issue a fix? Or, is there a fix?

Thanks...jb

Windows XP >> sp2 installed turns off Windows Firewall John;
Then turn it back on.
However SP-2 enables the firewall by default.
If after SP-2 the firewall is disabled and/unable to be enabled, something
went unusually wrong.
The most likely cause is a 3rd party firewall such as Symantec or McAfee as
well as others.
Some of those disable the Windows firewall by design.
That is one reason those programs should be disabled during SP-2
installation.

Windows XP >> sp2 installed turns off Windows Firewall Like a whole lot of other users, I can't turn it back on. The option to do
so is greyed out. It also says "group policy" may be controling it.

"However SP-2 enables the firewall by default."

In my case, it seems the opposite happened.

Windows XP >> sp2 installed turns off Windows Firewall Like you suggested. I went to start, run, and typed firewall.cpl. It
brought up my Firewall Window. The "on" option was greyed out and not
selectable.

Start | Run <type in> services.msc <enter>
Make sure: Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is set
to auto, reboot.

I do hope you haven't been running without a firewall all this time.
