- Windows XP >> 1G RAM reported as 512My BIOS reports 1G installed. SANDRA reports two banks
each of 512 memory installed. I've swapped out each stick
of memory and both work, and they each work in either
bank and physical memory is reported by XP system
information as 512. But, when both are installed, system
information only sees one bank of 512 memory. Prior to
installing XP, Win98SE saw the whole 1G.
Any advice?

- Windows XP Network >> Standalone network printer doesn't appear in network placesHi,
Windows XP Pro, SP2. OKI C7300N printer.
I've installed a standalone network printer (i.e. not connected to a
particular computer). Its IP address (assigned by DHCP on my router) is
192.168.0.7.
I've put it in the same MSHOME workgroup as the 3 computers on the network.
I can ping it by IP address and by name fine from all 3 PCs.
I've also run the Add Printer wizard by specifying a network printer and the
URL http://192.168.0.7/ipp (the printer supports IPP - Internet Printing
Protocol) and the printer now appears in Printers and Faxes as 'OKI C7300N
on http://192.168.0.7.'
I can print to it with no problem, however I have several questions:
1. Despite it being in the MSHOME workgroup, it doesn't appear in My Network
Places - Entire Network - Microsoft Windows Network - MSHOME. Any ideas
why?
2. What if DHCP assigns a different IP address the next time the printer is
switched on? Will its current internet port http://192.168.0.7/ipp then be
incorrect and printing therefore fail?
3. On the printer's Network Summary web page, the NetBEUI Status is shown
as:
Computer Name : OKI
Workgroup Name : MSHOME
Master Browser : ?????
Is Master Browser being '?????' the problem?
My aim, if at all possible, is to get the printer to appear in the MSHOME
workgroup so I could then run the Add Printer wizard and browse for it by
name instead of using the URL IPP method.
Hope someone can help - thanks for any info or tips.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Okay, it's the PCI slotsI've posted a few times here recently regarding difficulties I'm having
with XP not detecting a newly-installed sound card; but I think I've
made enough tests to say it's neither the card or the OS that's giving
me the problem. Here's the sequence of events:
I installed a Firewire card (Adaptec AFW-4300), but it was not
detected. Took the whole PC to the local tech shop, who declared the
card DOA because their shop machine wouldn't detect it either. $25
Returned the Adaptec card & bought a sound card w/ a Firewire port
(Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS) and installed that. It was not detected.
Thanks to a few helpful folks here, I exhausted all of the proper
installation steps & tricks to get the card to show up. No luck.
So I borrowed an "extra" Ethernet PCI card from a techie here at the
office & plugged that in. Not detected, on either slot (of two).
Given the unknowns of the true health of this card, though, the jury
was still out.
Brought in the new sound card & had it installed in an office machine.
Walla! It was detected.
I have to conclude, therefore, that both PCI slots on my PC are belly
up for some reason. I've scanned the BIOS settings & made certain all
of the obvious things were correct (e.g. PNP enabled, Onboard Audio
disabled, etc.), but I am at a loss.
It's looking as though I have a trip to the tech shop in my future (and
maybe a new motherboard?); but if anyone here has a tip for where else
I might look first, I'd certainly love to hear it.
TIA,
Joe

- Windows XP Security >> Windows Updates (BITS) 2.0 KB842773 install failHi all,
Im having an issue with getting Windows updates on one computer via SUS or
Windows update. I'be already scanned a number of KB842773 (fail) articles
via Google and have tried MS Article ID: 278316 to no avail. This computer
is running Windows XP in a workgroup environment. I have checked the five or
so security permissions via secpol.msc that are required to install updates.
Also, I have repaired secedit.sdb. At this point I'm at a loss. Below I
have proactively posted the KB842773 log of which the bulk of the middle is
removed to make this post. Any assistance or pointers will be appreciated.
Many thanks in advance,
-Gary

- Windows XP Network >> XP box Access Denied on 2K networkTrying to add a Windows XP box to the office network.
For some reason, even though I renamed the Owner account on the XP box, the
Windows 2000 network still sees the account as "Owner." Since Owner is not
registered on the server, Windows 2000 logs it in as a guest, which has no
privledges. That is why I get the access denied errors.
Can anyone tell me how I can change the user name that windows XP is
broadcasting?
Thanks!

- Windows XP Hardware >> DV camcorder not recognized IEEE FirewireThis seems to be very common. My Sony camcorder no longer works with my computer. It use to work. I have upgraded to XP and still it won't work. I have downloaded hot fixes but nothing. I have tried new cards but still nothing. My PCI OHI complian IEEE firewire card is working properly accourding to my computer. I have tried new cables and everything else. Sony does not supply DV drivers so I am out of luck. I have been working in the board http://www.dvboard.com/index.php?act=ST&f=13&t=21&s=06a96b2f3da5601e1e6a16647934f820 for a solution but have found none. Microsoft has been no help at all. They just tell me to download the dv driver from SONY who does not supply a dv driver.
Has anybody found a fix for this yet?

- customize >> roaming profileHi,
I have created a roaming profile for my user account, but there is one small
problem. How do I stop it from copying the entire roaming profile to the
local profile.
For example, my roaming profile is on D:\profile. When i log on, it loads
and copies all the contents in d:\profile to c:\documents and
settings\username. How do I stop this?
Thanks,
Tim.

- Windows XP Support >> "hosts" file or "HOSTS" file?I apologise in advance if this is the wrong group for asking this.
Could someone tell me if the "hosts" file located in
system32/drivers/etc should be in capital letters? ie HOSTS rather than
hosts. My file has always been named in lower case, as hosts, but I
have read comments that it should be capitalized, ie HOSTS. To further
add to the confusion, some people refer to both their HOSTS file and
hosts file in the same post, switching between the two at random.
I only picked up on this issue when I thought about locking the hosts
file in Zone Alarm and decided to read up about it on the internet.
Thanks in advance for any help or clarification.

- Windows XP >> "Ghost" PCI cardsHi,
I am experiencing problems with installing a PCI Wireless network adapter
(Jensen AirLink 83300 to be exact).
I suspect that the trouble is due to the fact that my XP Pro SP2 still
contains traces of old PCI cards which have been uninstalled (I thought ...)
and physically removed.
These traces are the following (note that I run a Norwegian version of XP,
my own English translations may therefore not be 100% accurate):
System Tools/System Information/Components/Network /Card:
Two entries related to my old PCI ISDN card are listed
System Tools/System Information/SW environment/System Drivers:
Two entries corresponding to my old PCI network adapter (D-Link) and
the new PCI network adapter (Jensen, also removed and attempted
uninstalled) are listed
Driver Verifier:
Lists the "linkisdn.sys" driver which also should have been removed.
I feel pretty sure that my installation problems with the Jensen PCI
Wireless network adapter is related to this. I have been surfing the Internet
to find a driver cleaner which can do the job, but it seems that all cleaners
only are effective with respect to a defined set of cards (usually graphic
and sound cards) from defined manufacturers and this won't help in my
situation.
Any advice? I don't mind a comprehensive manual process as long as it works!
Best regards, Ola

- Windows XP >> Computer Freezes with ScreenSaverIn the last few weeks, our home PC with Windows XP often freezes when left

- Windows XP Setup >> Slow Loading of items in the sytem tray!Greetings to all ...
I have an older Dell PC P4 running at 1.7 Ghz loaded with WIN XP SP2,
60 GIG H-D and just upgraded to 1 Giga-byte of RAM...
For about the past 6 months I have noticed the items in the system
tray are taking up to 2 to 3 minutes to completly load in the system
tray. I've noticed on other systems at work with the same type of PC
this seems to a much faster process (about 30-60 seconds) compared
to my Dell PC here at home....
The PC appears to be clean of any viruses using McaFee.
The items that are loading in the system tray are:
The Speaker Icon, Zone Alarms v6.5.737, McAfee Anti-Virus , HotSync,
TaskInfo v 6.2.3.190 and Windows Task Manager.
I've check the startup items in MSConfig and could not find anything I
could remove from the start-up tab.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

- Windows XP Network >> network web folder problemsSuddenly, I can't access my sites (except the MSN ones)
from web folders (aka my network places in 2000 and XP).
I can only get at them from FrontPage 2000 and Word
2002.
I've tried reinstalling:
web folders (from a download that is more recent than the
one in IE 5 or 5.5 so now it won't let me install it from
the old 5.5 setup cab file and Microsoft doesn't offer it
as download any more)
Personal Web Server
FrontPage server extentions
No luck.
I assume it's some glitch between the updated server
extensions and Word 2002 against Office 2000 (everything
else is V2000).
Do you think that could have anything to do with the
aggravating hangs I get when opening a browser window?
Most of the time I have to hit the reset button -
everything freezes up. I have reinstalled ie6 more times
than I can count. No improvement.
Thank you in advance, please reply on the newsgroup.

I am getting non-specific error messages:
"Outlook Express: There was an error opening this message. An error has
occurred"
"The address book failed to load. Outlook Exoress is incorrectly configured."
I tried the recommended method, using the disk I received with my computer,
but this did not work. The file was not found on the disk (It is a Dell
computer and came with pre-loaded software, I repeat, I am not a computer
specialist!)
Any suggestions how to resolve?
