- Windows XP Network >> 2000pro - xp pro networkI have a simple network with a lan cable between the computers. The 2000

not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator

- Windows XP Network >> Home Network ProblemI have a newly installed Linksys router and connected to two XP Home boxes to it. Both can ping the router and they can each ping themselves successfully but they cannot ping across to each other. Both have access to the Internet. The ICS is turned off; the firewalls are turned off; the web based router software shows the DHCP of both on the DHCP table. One computer shows the icon of the other in the workgroup but when I double-click on it, it says network path not found. The other computer does not show the full workgroup. I have reset the router, connected the computers to different jacks on the router, run the wizard for installing a home network countless times (each time claiming to be successful). Nothing seems to help. Can anyone?

- Windows XP >> Can I install a 32bit WinXP on a 64bit hardware ?Because some programs do not run on my WinXP 64bit installation I am thinking about to install
a 32 bit WinXP on my 64 bit hardware.
Is this possible in general?
How much percent will be the performance loss approx?
I would like to get an impression of how many people have done such an installation.
All the new hardware motherboards and CPUs are 64bit but there a only a few
usenet postings and sales numbers for 64 Bit WInXP.
So I assume that a lot of users must run 32 bit WinXP on 64 bit hardware.

Since a little while I am receiving following error message, when the upload
has been processed and I click "finish':

then try
again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
Can anybody advise me how to resolve this error message?

- Windows XP Hardware >> CD-R/RW, WON'T!!!!!!Hi,
I tried to burn some music to disc and had error. (using Nero)
On further investigation, also found that WMP 9 won't play or burn either.
Bottom line is that samsung CD-R/RW SW-248F can't read or write! It will accept a audio/data disc and attempt to read it (neon flashes) but does no more. I've checked the drivers and they seem ok (?) I've checked the autorun and it's on. It doesn't show up as a problem in device manager. I've deleted and reloaded Nero and WMP 9 to no avail. I know its not a power fault as the drive will spin the disc.
I don't know what else to try!
Any ideas anybody?
PS; The DVD/CD-Rom drive works ok.
TIA

- Windows XP >> Shutdown? No, restart! problem after installing ADSL ModemHi All -
I have recently installed broadband on my dad's PC, using a XIOD 3200U
ADSL modem. Unfortunately, since this installation ( which rapidly
led to about a million "hotfixes" being installed by Active
Patcher(TM) ), the machine wouldn't shutdown properly, but instead
reboot. After getting distracted with the well known EasyCD/Roxio
problems, I found out by accident (and a little intuition) that
disconnecting the modem actually fixes the problem in the short-term.
Now, this isn't really a great on-going solution, especially as doing
this to cables can lead to unnecessary wear. I also found some
references to checking a box on the USB Hub (for that is its
interface) in Device Manager to allow it to switch off. But that was
already checked. So I have come to a bit of a standstill.

- Windows XP Network >> Problem getting a new XP computer to join an NT 4.0/Win 98 domainHi,
I'm pretty inexperienced with anything beyond simple peer-to-
peer networks, although I have set up and worked with a lot of
these and know the basics pretty well. This is a recent problem
that I need some help with.
We have a simple network that was set up years ago and has
functioned well enough for quite some time. When I started
working here we decided that we would gradually start updating
the computers and the file server with the goal of getting
things into the 20th century.
We just bought a couple of Dell workstations with Windows XP and
I've already run into something today that I couldn't solve via
trial-and-error. I'll be hitting the books later, but I have a
feeling this might be something very simple that more
knowledgable folks could answer easily, so I'm posting here and
I guess to the Win98 networking group as well.
The current setup has a bunch of machines running Win 98 SE and
one machine with Win 2000 Pro. There is a file server that
runs NT 4.0 and *I believe* is also a domain controller. At
least all the existing computers are configured to log onto a
domain with a password at bootup.
If you scan Network Neighborhood for the Entire Network after
booting, there are 3 workgroups: Domain, Office and Workgroup.
The workgroup "Domain" (which is also the domain's name... ;-))
has only the server as a member, with a couple of shares set up
so all the computers can access and store data files on the
server. The other two workgroups have 4 and 5 computers
resepectively. All the computers map to the server shares and
all is fine.
In attempting to set up the new Dell workstation, which has XP
Professional, I am able to see the workgroups "Office" and
"Workgroup" and all the computers and shares in them. The
workgroup "Domain," however, doesn't show up at all.
I figured this is because the XP machine hasn't been set up to
log onto the domain, "Domain," but whenever I try to set it up
that way, i.e., change the workgroup setting to a domain, I just
get a quick search and then an error message saying that no
domain controller can be found.
I've gotten as far as reading the minimal troubleshooting notes
in XP and it sounded like there might be some DNS setup issues
with the NT 4.0/Windows 98 setup, but I'm just over my head with
that.
In a nutshell I need to somehow make it possible for the new XP
machines to see and map to shares on the NT file server. Once
that's all configured and users are getting used to the new
interface we'll move on to getting a more up-to-date server,
possibly install Small Business Server 2003, etc., etc. But
this is like stumbling right out of the blocks of a mile race
;-)!
Any pointers/advice/solutions appreciated.
Best regards,
Stephen Porter

Windows XP >> XP Home Edition - Installed Program Size
Hard drive space is an issue. I can free up the 1.5g
required to do the installation but will be cramped
thereafter.
Is the program going to use all of this space once
installed or will I regain the space that is occupied
currently by WIN98? and temp files created during the
setup?

1.5GB of free space is required to install Windows XP.
Unless you invest in a larger hard drive, there will be to
room left to install updates or programs.

If you are that cramped for space, do a clean install. Get rid of everything
pertaining to Win98 by doing so. An upgrade leaves tons of useless crap on
the hard drive from the previous O/S. If hard drive space is not a problem,
go for an upgrade.

- Windows XP Support >> Windows XP Pro SP2 Rebooting by Itself Randomly Only After 10PM. Please Help! (Don't want to clean reinstall)Folks, I've been pulling my hair out with this problem of mine and am
finally turning to you to see you can help me out.
I've had my new computer just a little over a month now which has
Windows XP Pro updated with SP2 and also with the latest Windows
security updates and up until 3 days ago, it was working just fine.
But since then, it would reboot itself without any warning at all, no
BSOD or no error messages and it would just reboot but only would do
so only after about 10PM or so.
That is why I'm able to write and post this message in this forum now.
Lastnight when I tried to write this, it would reboot again and again,
not even giving me enough time to post a message like this.
I've ran Norton and McAfee AV on my computer and it didn't show
anything unusual. I'm behind a Linksys WRT54G router and I just have
Windows Firewall running on my computer.
The funny thing is, since I work from home, I use the computer quite a
bit during the day as well and the I don't experience the reboot
problem during the day whatsoever.
Only after about 10PM is when my computer would reboot by itself and
would continue to do so, whether I have any apps open or not, whether
I'm actually logged into my account or whether I just let it sit with
the account login window, or even whether the computer's online or
whether I completely pull out the ethernet cable from it.
What I have noticed is that, when it reboots, it'll often have a
problem fully going through the POST process and many times it'll hang
before getting Windows to boot. So, I'll end up using the reset
button on my computer. And sometimes, it'll even hang on the Windows
boot screen where it shows the blue progress bar going from left to
right and I'll again using the reset button.
I'm at my wits end right now and was wondering if someone can suggest
or recommend a few things for me to look into or try to resolve this
problem? I really don't want to do a clean reinstall if I can help
it. I'll give anything a try at this point. TIA.
