- Windows XP Network >> XP clients lose authentication to Win2K3 server overnightI have two WinXP [SP1 w/current security hotfixes] users that stay logged
in indefinetly to their Win2K3 server connections or at least try to.
In the span of 8-36 hours their authentication goes stale and they cannot
reconnect without rebooting. The error box indicates a connection already
exists for the user if they try to login to the login dialog box that pops
up when they are trying to utilize a prior network link. [\\... link not D:
mapping].
I use Win2K Pro workstation and do not have the same problem. Nor have we
seen this with WinXP conneccted to Win2000 server.
Any suggestions?

- Windows XP >> Cannot install Microsoft .NET FrameworkCannot install Microsoft .NET Framework. I checked the
solution provided by Microsoft which is to remove the
encryption from the Temp folder. But it didn't work
either. Can any one suggest something?...I am using XP
Professional and am planning to install Visual Studio.NET.
The message that I get when I try to install Framework is

- Windows XP >> usb 2 hardware but no usb2 functionI have read everything I can find on the knowledge base, as well as on the
Via website. I have an AMD based machine with a VIA chipset kt600-8237. I
have successfully installed the Via Enhanced Host Controller driver. On the
Device Manager I discern the following:

I am suspicious of the usbd.sys driver - being an older version. Further,
the USB 2.0 Root Hub is listed as NEC. I realize that this was the original
USB 2.0 driver, but this does not seem right. Online update of these drivers
does not work. The usb does work in 1.1 mode, but not usb 2.0 mode.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Game CardNot able to activate the Thrustmaster Game card with
Windows XP. The Control stick / throttle / rudder pedals
required a dedicated game card to work with Flight
Simulator 2002 when I ran everything under WIndows 98.
Now the Windows XP system will not use this earlier
gamecard. This game card uses the 15 pin plug (not a USB
plug). Help

This is more of an un-researched comment but I wanted to see if others are
having similar problems, and/or if I overlooked something. We've recently
attempted to deploy Vista onto a 15GB Partition
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3). WinXP SP2 is installed on partition 1,
with server 2003 SP1 on partition 2. It seems Vista decided to roll back
mid-way through the installation due to failure, and when the system rebooted
it mentioned that the "Boot Mgr missing."
I haven't done any in-depth research into this, So pardon my ignorance if I
have overlooked anything.

KERNLL32.dll" I press ok, then receive the

- Windows XP Hardware >> Comp freezingI have a problem with my computer freezing a couple hours
after reboot.
New install of XP. New hard drive. New motherboard. New
memory. P4 1.5 chip is 4 months old. New case with extra
fans
I thought the problem might be heat-related. Installed
new fan on cpu, silver thermal compound. After a crash,
checked bios, and CPU temp was only 43 degrees C.
Any suggestions?

- Windows XP Setup >> Easy way to manage mutiple users/desktopsI am just using the multiple users for the first time, setting each family
member up with their own logon (including 2 kids). Is there an easy way to
put access to basic stuff on the kids, and keep the adult ones with
everything? Each time I install a new program, I'd like to know what the
easiest way to set it up is, placing access to the 2 adult accounts, but not
the kids. Is there an easy way of indicating what should startup when each
user logs onto their account?

- Windows XP Hardware >> two dvd/cd drives not reading discsI have 2 dvd/cd drives that have stopped reading any discs. Upon
checking the drives under "my computer" I see no disc data. When I
double click a drive under my computer a box comes up and says please
insert a disc, altough a disc with data is already there! I know this
is not a drive/laser issue because both drives went down at the same
time. This must be a software issue?Apparently I have accidently done
something to cause this.
Please HELP!!!

sound device was gone. Also, we now have to hit F1 to get to our user
names. Actually, I don't recall how I installed the O/S. Prior to
installing (after the system crashed) there was no problem sound normal boot
etc..

- Windows XP >> Safe Removal tool gone missingThe "safe hardware removal tool" has gone missing from
the taskbar. I have a USB ADSL modem always connected,
so it should be there... but it still doesn't appear when
I plug in my USB data key.
Can't find any reference to the s/w which performs this
function so can't attempt to start it manually.
Any ideas? (This is XP pro SP1 and all critical updates)

anybody logon locally even though the passwords have all been reset to blank.
it appears that it will only allow logons if it is a member of some domain (
there are about 15 domains that this laptop had been connected to ). and,
further, the usernames appear to be case sensitive ( i thought that windows
was not case sensitive for usernames, only passords ? ) and if one does not
enter a password within a minute or so it will lock-out the account as well.
is this done by WinXP or a third party utility ? and, if so, what is the
utility and is there any way around this to allow users to logon locally ? it
is a laptop so i am not sure why it would be configured to only allow access
on a domain (??). tia ...

i have always had excellent advice from here and i habitually come here.
i have seen the results of a class in internet explorer. but after 10 days
when i want to see the numbers and results again i find that only 15 numbers
can be displayed in the auto complete (ie as soon as i type the first
number, the numbers come up in a drop down box.) how can i increase the
number to, say 50, so that i need not have the list again and need not refer
it again.

Windows XP >> Windows XP DST
Good Afternoon Everyone,
I am having a problem with the recent DST change. I recently had to do a
repair/upgrade on a couple of Dell Optiplex 320 PCs. The repair went fine but
now the PC will not automatically adjust the time for DST. I install all of
the Windows updates and I recently tried to install the DST 2007 update.
After the installation it said it was already installed. Thank everyone in
advance for their help.

Might apply here:
Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.
After running the fix in KB943144, check in at Windows Update again.

me.
Recently I've been connecting to the Internet and
sometimes it's been fine but other times I get a message
about 2-3 minutes in saying...
"This system is shutting down. Please save all work in
progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost.
This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.
Message: Windows must now restart because the Remote
Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly"
At first I thought I'd been infected by the Sasser virus
but I've run the check on the Microsoft site and I appear
to be clean. Does anyone out there have an idea what is
happening here and know how to prevent it?

I don't think you can burn with the D: drive. Can you? If not, are there ANY
programs anywhere that can? My E: drive is broken and I can't use it, but I

- Windows XP Setup >> Fatal error on installWhile trying to upgrade from Win2K Pro to WinXP Pro,
installation will get about 75% done and then give an
error message "Installation Failed. E:\I386\asms. Error
message: The system cannot find the file specified". I
searched the knowledge base and found a "solution" but
was unable to open regedit as suggested. Can't even get
to online help because I can't access the software for
the product ID. Any help would be appreciated.

- Windows XP Setup >> Software works in one PC but not the otherI use Lotus Organizer 4.1 version which fits for W98 & NT. I installed it in the XP Pro run by P2 733GHz and it works without changing the compatibility on XP. I installed it on another PC P4 3.2GHz and the application cannot launch. I check mark the compatibility to W98 and it still not works. I tried another P4 422 GHz run by XP Home and it works. Any ideas which areas should I look into? I do not think it has to do with the hardware speed. Your help is appreciated.

- Windows XP >> System Standby Settings ...Hello ...
I have a new computer with Windows XP and am somewhat confused about
System Standby. My previous computer had Windows XP also, but I
didn't use System Standby because I've had issues with computers (and
I think it was that other one) going into Standby and then not coming
back out. When that would happen, I'd have to turn the computer off
from the power strip and restart the computer.
This computer was pre-set for the Energy Star power scheme. I'm not
sure if that's the preferred setting or if it just happened to be set
for that. There is also a setting for Home/Office Desk.
With the Energy Star power scheme, the settings are:
Turn off monitor: Never
Turn off hard disks: Never
System standby: After 15 minutes
System hibernates: Never
With the Home/Office Desk power scheme, the setting are:
Turn off monitor: After 20 minutes
Turn off hard disks: Never
System standby: Never
System hibernates: Never
So ... I'm not sure which of these I should be using. And why would
it save "Never" under the System Standby for Home/Office Desk? Does
that mean that if I have a desktop computer (it's a Hewlett Packard
900 series) I should not let the computer go into Standby?
And does anyone know what Energy Star means or is supposed to be used
for?
The other thing is ... the computer has stopped going into Standby
consistently. It had been doing it, but now it doesn't do it all the
time. Sometimes it does, sometimes not.
Why would it not be doing it consistently? It is currently set for
Energy Star power scheme.
Generally ... is System Standby a good idea? I don't think I'd want
to use the Hibernate option. But if I usually leave the computer
turned on all day and usually turn it off at night, is System Standby
a good thing? Or can it be problematic? (For example, as I said, I
don't know why it's not doing it consistently at the moment.)

- Windows XP Setup >> BartPE and cd driveI'm using bartpe to automate the prosses of creating unattende images.
from the cd we start diskpart /s d:\diskpart.txt through a cmd file.
The problem is that bartpe makes the disk drive d or x depending on the
system we are booting the cd from.
Is there an easy way to resolve this?

I like the Solarwinds IP Network Browser application (link below), but
I don't want to pay for the $145 standard solarwinds package to get
it. Does anyone know of similar software (just the IP Network
Browser) for which I can get at less cost?
I'm hoping to find something that can run across Windows, Linux, and
possibly Mac OS X and other unixes. However, I'll get by with just a
Windows version.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Recycle BinThere is an item in my recycle bin that for some reason
has become invisible. I need to get this item visible so
that I can return it to its proper location. Before you
ask how do I know if there is an item in my recycle bin
when it is not visible, the answer is because when I run
disk cleanup it tells me that there is an item in the
recycle bin that can be deleted.
It was suggested that I click control panel/folder
options/view tab, then select show hidden files and
folders, the unselect hide protected operating system
files (recommended) and look for a folder called RECYCLER
where I would be able to view the folder and all of its
contents.
I performed the above steps and I was able to locate the
Recycler folder and I was able to open the folder, but
when I tried to view the contents of the folders, I still
received a blank screen, thus not showing me the item
contained which is still preventing me from returning
this item to its proper location.
I would appreciate further assistance in getting this
issue resolved.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> PLEASE I really need help!!!Since just a few days, as i was stoping some processes
from the task manager to free up some memory, whenever I
want to turn off my computer by going to start, turn off
computer, the computer will restart instead of shuting
down!!!
If you are aware of this issue and know a solution,
please be kind enough to reply. I m afraid to loose data
by having to turn it off by pushing to power button
everytime.

I am using DELL Latitude C640 with Windows XP Professional
installed. There is a strange problem that I am facing.
All of sudden my laptop shuts down. I see no error on the
screen. Even when I check the event log there is no log
for any thing related to this incident. But I see that
there is a warning message in the System Log. it looks
like this " A request to suspend power was denied by
WINWORD.EXE." The Event ID is 240 and the source is win32k.
I tried searching for the event ID on Google & Microsoft
Site, but no luck.
This problem has occured for the second time and I am
unable to understand why this is happening?
Please help!! Its urgent..

- Windows XP Security >> No "Security" tab for filesI'm getting "Permission Denied" in Windows XP Pro in an IIS ASP classic
application, while trying to use the FileSystemObject to write a file. This
is a developer workstation.
I'm used to using Windows NT Server, then Windows 2000 Server, then Windows
2003 Server, as a combination standalone workstation/server for my office. I
am used to being able to freely modify the files' ACL using the Security tab
in the files' or folders' Security tab. But after getting a new workstation
with Windows XP Pro, I see that the Security tab is stripped out.
Is there a setting in the Local Security Settings or some other place where
I can have access to the security settings for the files, to return this
Security tab?!
I am a web developer and I cannot afford to have to upload to the server for
every stupid test run for my web apps, just to be able to write files on the
web server. Keep getting "Permission Denied", and I can't do a thing about
it. The User access settings in the FP2002 web admin pages don't seem to
help even when I add IUSR_[LOCALHOST] as an author.

- Windows XP Security >> Group Policy problem with HP 6110 All-in-OneUsing XP Professional and Microsoft's Group Policy, my
system will not print to an HP 6110 All in One configured
through a Jetdirect 175x network interface connection when
the group policy is in control. When the Group Policy is
not in affect, the printer is fine. Other printers are
not affected by the Group Policy. Are there updates to
the Group Policy that are required? Are there setting
within the Group Policy that need to be configured and
that control this devices printing? Does the Group Policy
lack the capability to see a printer configured with a
Jetdirect interface box?
