- Windows XP Support >> USB plug-in, plug-out, soundsYou know the little dee-dum, dum-dee sound that the system makes when
plugging or unplugging a USB device? Well, just sat here now and my system
is doing this about 5 times a minute, then it'll go quiet for maybe 5 or 10
minutes, and then it may do it again (or it may not) - but I'm not plugging
or unplugging any USB devices at all. In other words, this is completely
random and for no reason whatsoever.
Any ideas anyone?
Cheers,
John

I have had some problems with windows xp and decided that

- Windows XP Support >> problem with re-installing windows xp home edt!!!!!Hi Everyone,
I use Windows XP Home Edt with Service Pack 2.
Long story short....
I had a problem, which I thought was to do with my Windows, so I tried to
re-install it.
A bit of the way through the re-install, it told me I had a prblem with my
install disc (can't see any scratches, but who knows). So anyway I restarted
Windows and it has worked fine since then (touch wood!!). Since then, when I
start my computer I have to sit next to it and wait, I get a screen that
comes up that asks me which operating system I want to start. I can either
start my original Windows XP home edition or I can opt for the Windows
Install/Setup option, even thought there is no disc in the drive.
I guess my question is, how do I get the computer to start up with the
original (and configuration that wasn't the problem) without sitting next to
it waiting for that screen to appear?
Many Thanks In Advance,
Best Regards,
Maria x

We have just set up a Win 3k Server for approx 300 desktops and I have been left with the task of writing learning guides for people on how to use the new network (users are used to working with Netware). I have tried the old Alt+Print Screen with no luck. This is obviously a security feature... somewhere. Is there any way to get/are these on the microsoft site/does anyone have these login dialogs including change password dialog screen shots for XP

Windows XP >> Is my graphics card broken ?
Hello all
I posted a message a whila ago with regard to problems with graphic
hungry files not opeing on my computer. If I could ask for a bit more
assistance ?
Right clicking on my desktop and going, Properties, settings, advanced,
adapter gives me the following:
Chip type: unavailable
DAC type: unavailable
memory size: unavailable
Adapter string: unavailable
Bios information: unavailable
Thanks to info provided here I uploaded Everest and it tells me I have
an
"nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200" as my Video Adapter and 3D accelerator.
Belarc adviser does not recognise this at all.
I have completely unintstalled all nVidia software / drivers and tried
to start again from the nVidia website but always end up with an error
message stating that "there are no suitable drivers" on my PC.
My latest plan was to remove the Graphics Card to ensure all the
physical connections were OK. I ensured there were no drivers /
Software associated with the card before i did this in the vein hope
that my computer would recognise the graphics card. All seems fine and
as you can see, the PC is working, but still no sign of the graphics
card.
Am I barking up the wrong tree altogether ? My problem continues to be
larger pictures within "fotopic.net" not showing, some thumbnails (web
based) not showing. Unable to run already installed games (Microsoft
flight and trainsims). I get no error messages, they just do not load.
I have been unable to install new games. Google Earth will not run.
I am using Microsodt XP 2000 with service pack 2.
If my card is shot, any suggestions for a good alternative.
Once again thanks for any help on advance, I really miss Google Earth
!!!

First of all the lates Forceware drivers for you card should install easily
and automatically. I, personally, would make sure that I have all the lates
updated drivers for my system from the manufacturer. In particular all the
updated Mother Board drivers. Here is the link for the latest Forceware.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_84.21.html
When in doubt go to one of the nvidia forums. The people there have more
experiance with those vid cards. TTFN.

Hello Richard,
It doesn't sound like a hardware problem to me, more like a driver issue.
Have you tried system restore? works like a charm.

It really sounds as if you don't have the proper driver.
Just what are you doing when you go to the nVidia website? It sounds as
if you did read the "Driver Installation Hints Document" as nVidia
recommends; did you remember to disable your anti-virus program while
installing the driver? What, exactly, happens after you download
84.21_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql.exe
and double-click it? Please post COMPLETE text of ALL error messages.

Windows XP >> Is my graphics card broken ?
Hi
Thanks again for the help so far:
All instructions were followed in the "download tips" section, with the
exception of disadling my "download accelerator" as i cannot find it in
the system tray. I have disabled Mcafee firewall and Virus scan (they
are back on now). I am using Blueyonder IE as my browser.
Having run the suggested download
"84.21_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql.exe" the error message was:
"The NVIDIA setup program could not locate any drivers that are
compatible with your computers hardware. Setup will now exit"
Again, any assistance very gratefully received.

Very interesting. I suspect that you have a laptop with some sort of
proprietary video card that uses an nVidia chip but is not a "real"
GeForce FX 5200.
What the driver install routine is telling you is that -- like Belarc
Adviser -- it isn't finding a video board that it recognizes.
Assuming that your video card came with the computer when you bought it
-- and if it's a laptop, that's almost certainly the case -- go to the
website of the computer's manufacturer and check for video driver
downloads and/or support there.

Thanks again Lem
Its a fairly "normal" PC tower brought through Tiny in the UK. they are
now defunct of course. The video card did imdeed come with the PC but
there were no drivers / Software related to the video card though.
To be honest, buying a new card is an option I can bear, if it is
likely to solve the problem.
reccomendations for home use ?
Thanks again

Try using this tool, carefully, http://www.drivercleaner.net/ to ensure all
remnants of the drivers are removed.
Then remove, check contacts, and reseat your vid card.
Then try to reinstall the driver from nvidea site
This assumes you have checked in Device Mngr, vid.card, checked properties
and it shows no conflicts or any other prob.

Windows XP >> Is my graphics card broken ?
Have you tried to re-install/install the motherboard chipset drivers? Chipset
drivers usually provide an AGP slot driver which would allow Windows / drivers
to read the entire info from the video card chip(s).

- Windows XP Setup >> Cannot get SP1 on.Hello all.
I am haveing a big problem with XP Pro. I am trying to install the OS on a
computer for my sister and absolutly CANNOT get SP1 on the machine. Everytime
I try to load the OS I get SOME error. This last time during setup it stopped
and told me it could not find three different files. Two of the three went on
(I think) when I hit the retry. The third and final file pro_seg.swf would
not go on no matter what I tried. Now I finally got the system up with a VERY
basic load of XP. Only problem is now when I try to update the system with
the Security Update CD I got from Microsoft, I keep getting errors. I know
the CD is ok, I have used it on other systems with no trouble. The first time
on this load I tried to install SP1 I recieved a Fatal Error and it shut down
the install. The next time I tried i now have a "Failed to install catalog
files" error.
OK.. Now what?? I am at a loss.. I have been fighting this machine for
more than a week now.. I have tried different XP Pro CDs and no luck with
those.. And for those who will tell me to use a legit copy .. I already
am...
Any Idea?? Thank you all in advance for your help and advice.

The user was previously added to the AD, the machine I believe has been added to the wins server (will need to verify this). Am I missing something or is there a limitation in the OS.

- customize >> Customizing mouse wheel scrollingI just upgraded to windows XP and noticed that the mouse
scroll wheel doesn't function the same as in Windows 2000.
The basic problem:
In windows 2000, if you have multiple window frames open
and you point in one of them frames, then scroll with the
wheel, the pages scroll. If you move to another frame and
scroll with the wheel, the pages scrolls.
In windows XP, when I move between frames with the pointer
and scroll - it scrolls in the old frame, not the new one.
I need to click within the new frame in order for it to
scroll in the new frame. I find this irritating and would
like to know if I can customize it to the windows 2000
method of point and scroll.
Thanks in advance,
David

- Windows XP >> configuring a laptop to be a member of/logon to 2 domainsHi...
Does anyone know a way of making a laptop be a member of two domains at the
same time so the user can choose what domain he/she wants to login to at the
windows login prompt... We have two offices with different domains... and
some users work at both. The domains are untrusted as one of the
networks is looked after by a sbs2000 server...

- Windows XP Network >> VPN Connection or File SharingThis is a follow-up on my previous question regarding making a remote
connection to my home network via VPN to access my files and my faxes. On my
previous question it was suggested that I just do file sharing.
My problem is when I am on a different location, my laptop's ip address
range changes. How van I make it static so I can add such ip on my router as
trusted ip.
Thanks,
Mike
