- Windows XP Setup >> System Restore Passsword QuestionWhen I set up a Scheduled Task to set a restore point at startup, I get the
message "The scheduled task did not run because no user account password was
entered."
This comp has only one user who does not want any passwords - for anything.
Is there any way to bypass this requirement in System Restore? Simply
clicking 'Enter" when prompted for a password does not work.
THx in advance

- Windows XP Security >> Windows explorerCan anyone tell me why windows explorer wants to access
the internet? I have windows xp home edition. I bought
this computer a year ago and windows xp home was pre-
installed along with a whole package of junk from HP.
I have since uninstalled the junk I don't use. I have
installed Sygate personal firewall, and I use Norton
Antivirus 2004.
Windows explorer (not internet explorer) is trying to
access the internet every now and then, and I can't
understand why it would need access. I have pest patrol,
adware, and spybot search and destroy and I run them at
least once a week, so I have ruled out the possibility
that any spyware or adware could be trying to phone home.
Is there a legitimate reason for windows explorer to
access the internet?
Thanks for your expert response.

- Windows XP >> Still having problems deleting this file...This file seems to be stuck on my computer! Whenever I
try to delete it, it says that the file is being used by
another program or user. So, it won't let me delete it! I
tried closing all programs then deleting. No luck. I
already tried going into Safe Mode to delete it, but that
didn't work either! Is there anything else I can do?
Is there such a thing as a file that is undeletable?!
This is a sucky situation. I appreciate your help!!

- Windows XP >> "win.ini", [Internal] Section: What kind of entries?OS is WinXP Pro SP2
Last 4 lines of "C:\WINDOWS\win.ini" reads:
[Internal]
Install=1145744660
Install2=1145744660
Device2=us/Hx73Jysi7xsi5y8a9zr2+xss=
I've searched for both "1145744660" and "Hx73Jysi7xsi5y8a9zr2" in
both Registry (using regedit) and on C-drive (i.e. using ex. "DIR
C:\*1145744660* /a /b /s").
- These searches found nothing.
Could these "Internal" values be meaningful references into internal
Windows components or programs, or 3.rd party programs, or external
not-connected devices (ex. USB HD) ?
Is the "Internal" section of win.ini really an official Microsoft
standard or convention?
FYI: I recently cleaned out a suite of Virus, SpyWare, HiJack, - but it
doesn't seem reasonable to assume that any (of those I cleaned out)
was targeting a device.
And Yes - I'm pretty sure that no weird unexpected processes are
currently running.

- Windows XP Support >> Unable to start Windows on my laptopI try to startup my laptop and immediately get get the message about pressing
F2 to enter setup and then nothing else - if I press F2 then the laptop just
waits and then starts normally afer about 15mins - Next time I switch on
everything is OK for perhaps a week and then it all happens again - Am I
missing something really simple?

- Windows XP Security >> Group Policy in non-domain envronmentCan I apply policies to individuals (or local groups) on a local
workstation?
I want to restrict certain users from doing certain tasks, but allow
administrators to do anything. I can see how to restrict the ability to
do/see certain things, but can't find out how to apply these restrictions to
indivdiuals or groups.
Can anyone point me to a document that deals with this particualr item?
There is tons of info on Group Policies, but I have yet to find out how to
apply User settings to a user.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Repair Installation problemsTo cut a moderately long story short I was having problems booting Windows XP
and was getting an error message saying that "load needed DLL's for kernel".
I searched for solutions to this and found that the recommended solution by
microsoft was a repair install which I am now trying to do. However after
booting from the CD and starting the repair install process booting windows
now takes several minutes which it didn't before and all that happens after
this period is the setup window appears, tells me that it will take 39
minutes to finish the installation but then quickly goes wrong saying that
"setup failed to install the product catalouges" and gives the error code of
3e7 which means nothing to me.
Is there anything that can be done to fix this?

- Windows XP Hardware >> "Ejecting" SATA drive (mass storage device, NOT USB) using scriptI have used many tools:
deveject
devcon
removedrive
sync
all seem to work with USB drives but will not work properly with Mass
storage devices of the hard drive kind (SATA) that isn't USB.
I know the Eject Devices GUI, but i want to run this through script.
Is there any way of achieving this, or has MS made windows inccappable of
doing so? (seems kinda silly to me)
Thanks you for all responses

- Windows XP Support >> PC won't boot with new motherboardMy Medion 8383 wouldn't power up and the local computer shop diagnosed a
duff motherboard.
I took out my HD and put a blank brand new one in before I took it to the

They fitted the new MB and said it was booting fine.
I have now connected up the original HD, so just moved the power and data
cables over from the new HD to my original.
It won't boot up. I get a black screen offering to boot nortmally, safe
mode, last good configuration, all options return to this screen. I get the
black Wiundows screen with the couloured window as it boots up.
Apart from take it back to the shop, is there anything I could try?

- Windows XP >> File Access ProblemHello,
My computer (Windows XP Home Edition updated 1/23/04)
will allow me to open graphics (JPEG, TIFF etc.) if I
locate and open them through Windows Explorer. However,
whenever I attempt to access them through an application,
the application locks up and closes. The lockup will
often occur simply by choosing a folder that contains
graphics files.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
