- Windows XP Hardware >> Two cd drives will not work on one machineHi there,
I am helping a pal to install a second cd drive to his Pentium P4 running XP
Home.
No matter what we do, we can only get one of the two cd drives to work at
one time.... we have tried various slave/master jumper settings, tried
having one of the drives on the primary IDE slaved to the HDD... And of
course tried both drives on the Secondary cable... one slave, one master....
The facts are :
1/ The drive that works (and can be seen by Windows) is always the slave
device on the secondary cable. In fact, even if only one drive is installed,
it has to be set to slave for it to be accessible. No other position in the
IDE setup will work for either/any CD drive.
2/ At bootup time, if two drives are installed a PXE message appears saying
""PXE-E61: Media Test Failure ... check the cable. And also "PXE-MOF -
existing PXE ROM". It also seems to give a sort of prompt (for a CD boot
device ?) It just says : "CD: "
If only one drive installed as slave, no messages appear.
3/ Either of the drives (the CD/R or the CD/RW) will work in the computer if
it is setup as per 1) above, as a slave on the secondary IDE.
4/ I have checked the BIOS & can confirm that none of the boot devices are
set as CD devices (in case message in 2) above relates to this).
5/ In device manager, no errors appear against the IDE or CD devices...
second drive doesn't appear though of course.
6/ During early boot process, both CD devices are auto defined correctly to
BIOS... ie. as master and slave on secondary cable.
7) One of the drives is a CD/R, the other CD/RW
Any hints ??
Thanks,
Bruce

Windows XP >> shadows on screen
A couple of minutes after I log on, I get these shadows
or ghosts on my screen like when you have a TV with no
cable and you get bad reception. When I pull up the
monitor's control panel, that screen is fine so I guess
it's a Windows problem. ANy thoughts?

Not necessarily. Be sure that both ends of the monitor cable are seated
firmly into their sockets. Wiggle them gently.

- Windows XP Security >> Policies on XP in NT4.0 domainI am new to XP policies and need to set up a policy on XP
workstations that are on a domain using NT4 as domain
controllers. A local policy on each XP would be OK. I
would like the policy to apply to just certain users on
the workstation and not to all users. Basically, I need
to disallow changing IE proxy for certain user groups. Is
this possible and where do I find instructions on
accomplishing this. Any recommended books, etc.
Thanks,

- Windows XP >> Help needed with wireless accessI have a Sony Vaio laptop with Windows XP Pro SP2. We got a D-Link
DIR-655 wireless router and gigabit switch to use for wireless
connections.
When I configure the wireless settings using WPA-PSK /TKIP I can see
the SSID broadcast but I cannot connect. When I try, I see a balloon
popup in the tray that says it's validating the connection. Then I get
an error that no certificate could be found. I have NO IDEA why it's
looking for a certificate.
On another laptop (a HP) ALSO with Windows XP pro sp2, I configure the
wireless the same way (using Windows to manage the wireless
connection, just like with the Sony) and the HP connects fine.
What can I check on the Sony laptop that would help to resolve this
problem?

- Windows XP Support >> Curious Connectivity ProblemWinXP Home, IE6
My wife's computer was set up with two user accounts, one for each of us.
I rarely use my account. Today, I tried using it and discovered a curious
situation while accessing web sites with IE6.
If I use IE6 on her account, everything behaves normally.
But when I access the same sites from my user account, I get frequent
"failure to connect "error 12029" errors. The log from the connectivity
tool seems to show that while HTTPS sites load normally, HTTP accounts don't
connect.
Obviously both her account and mine share the identical DSL wired
connection.
Suggestions welcome.

- Windows XP >> Files and Settings Transfer WizardI have fitted a Serial ATA drive with a new copy of XP installed onto it
into my PC.
Prior to this I used the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard on my old drive
to backup my data etc.
After getting the new SATA drive working I used Files and Settings Transfer
Wizard again to finish off the install.
All of the files transferred but the settings did not. After the Wizard
ended I still only had my original log in on the new drive, the other users
had not been created.
Anyone seen this and know where I went wrong ?
Thanks

- Windows XP >> I'm thrilled with XP HOME, but......Hi,
I had a 3com/US Robotics Modem for 12 months and could never install
it on WIN 98. I just gave up trying! When I got XP, I knew I would
need new drivers before I even thought of installing. But I did
install just the same.
. But LO!...I didn't even need new drivers. I installed it, started
up with the floppy in place and sha zaaaam...my modem was working. I
actually believe that XP did not read the floppy...I saw no dialog
boxes for the user's input! That's why I'm thrilled with XP.
BUT !!!! I am alone in the world and I NEVER expect to have any other
'USERS' Aren't I wasting hard drive and memory resouces with all theat
USER junk ?? Can someone tell me how I can rid my XP of anything to do
with other users???
Also....I downloaded the latest WIN XP updates, but halfway through,
my monitor had stopped getting any signal from the PC, (blank) but the
HDD was still grinding away, I presume still downloading. I checked to
be sure I had no screen savers working....no-the monitor just stopped
getting the signal! I waited until the hard drive stopped working and
I signed off-line. But is there a way I can tell IF THE DOWNLOAD WAS
SUCCESSFUL??? Where can I look?
Thanks for a great group, a great OP SYS!!! And thanks to Dell for a
great PC
