- Windows XP Setup >> Why is any internet security I install killing my computer?I had a McAfee firewall and virus protection, when it expired I decided to
try a firewall and virus protection that my cable company for free. Upon
suggestions from my ISP I uninstalled all of my spy sweepers, virus scanners
and all of my McAfee Security. After installing the package that I downloaded
from my ISP my computer ran incredibly slow and froze up on me every time. I
uninstalled and added another 512 MB of RAM like my ISP recommend. Still
after the improvement to my computer the install from my cable company still
acted the same and froze my computer.
I gave up on the cable company and bought a Norton Internet Security 2006.
Once I installed NIS I ran into the same issues of slow starting and freezing
up again.
I have run the virus scan before installing NIS and removed any malware and
viruses that were there. I have also run a removal tool for McAfee, and
removed everything resembling a firewall, virus scanner, spy sweeper or
removal tool. I have deleted all of the programs from the 'add remove
programs' the program files on my C drive (one McAfee file I can't completely
delete) along with anything in my registries and anything that comes up when
I do a search for McAfee and Spy sweeper.
I have tapped out all of the tech support from Norton and my cable company,
and have tried everything I can think of.

- Windows XP Security >> restrict access to my documents on my user areaI have set myself up as admin on windows xp, but i thought this meant that other "limited" users could not access my files. At the moment if any user opens "my computer" they can view all of the files on every persons user account
Surely there must be a way of restricting this to admin only, so that limited users cannot access others documents or view them..
i thought maybe that under properties of my documents folder i could tick the "make this folder private box" which looks like what i was looking for, but it wont let me tick that box - it is watermarked out..
I am not a computer genius so any help would be appreciated. thanks.

- Windows XP Support >> Right click and "File" options not respondingHi there
When I right-click on a folder or file in Windows Explorer or use the File
menu option such as properties, nothing happens!
Right click options such as WinZip etc. work - but XP ones such as
properties and security / sharing do nothing!
Anyone any ideas what is going on here? I haven't loaded any software
recently - this just seemed to start happening. My Norton software is
up-to-date so I don't think it is a virus...
Really do not want to wipe my PC and have to start all over again....but if
this doesn't sort itself out then it looks like I might have to.
All help much appreciated

- Windows XP >> shut down twiceHello
Every time I shut windows xp down, I have to do it
twice. I start the normal way, "start", "Shutdown",
then "shutdown" in the new window. I usually get a
snipet of the audio goodbye, then nothing happens. Then,
I repeat the routine, and it shuts down. Has anyone else
had this annoyance?

Hi there,
We would need more information before any real help is offered, but when
the frequency (pitch) of the audio is raised in the manner described this is
often a symptom of the two frames (often referred to as 'A' and 'B') that
make an image being processed in the wrong order.
Information required will include...
What is the source of the elements used to make the video; for example are
they still images, are they captured clips, if they are captured clips were
they captured using Movie Maker and if so which version. If they were
captured using other software were the parameters for capture set
properly...if set as capture A then B this may cause issues when the clip is
introduced to Movie Maker. The most common capture style is B then A or if
you prefer Odd then Even.
What is the source of the audio part of your project. Is it audio attached
to a video clip or is it audio from a separate file. Whichever it is, what
is the sampling rate and the data rate of the audio. A trick used by some to
stop you using their audio and video is to set the play back rate to a non
standard speed. Windows Media Player can easily cope with this but some
video editing packages can not....one such video clip is the "Alien Song"
(Alien sings along to the music I will Survive)
In addition to the above and if the problem is with a captured video clip,
we would also need to know what the camera was and how was it connected to
the computer.
Best Wishes....................John

- Windows XP Network >> More file/printer sharingHi folks. First let me say that I have tried to solve my issue by reading
through previous posts but as yet have had no luck, so i hope someone can
help me.
I am running a home network with a dektop and a laptop, connected directly
by Cat5 cable. The desktop connects to the internet via internal dial-up
modem.
The desktop is running XP Home and the laptop XP Pro. Both are updated to
the hilt. Desktop was previously running McAfee PF+ but it has been
uninstalled. After reading a previous thread I found and followed
instructions for a deeper manual uninstall.
I have run the home networking wizard about 300 times. ICS works fine.
Desktop can see shared folders on Laptop, but Laptop cannot see any shared
folders, or the printer, on Desktop. If I try to map a network drive nothing
comes up under Desktop, and if i right-click and choose Open I get the
following message:
"\\Desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions.
Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at
this computer."
Hope you can help. Let me know if there is any further info you need.

- Windows XP Support >> Help, Blue Screen...0x7EHi,
I'm not good at computers, and my 2-yr old home PC (a Compaq Presario)
has been giving me a lot of problems recently. I need some assistance,
please, and many thanks in advance. (I'm now surfing the net using a
borrowed laptop.)
My PC uses Windows XP, Home Edition.
When my PC starts up, it goes into EITHER the blue screen of death OR
just a blank, black screen.
When it's the blue screen, the following technical information is
shown:
STOP: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF8B71B06, 0XF9D89564, 0XF9D89260).
I don't know what that means or how i can fix the error.
When I reboot, I can go into safe mode, and restore my PC to an earlier
system check-point, but my Norton can't check for or correct any
registry errors in that mode.
I know there's already some threads in this forum on 0x7E errors in
general, but i can't find any with the specific "technical info"
combination shown in bold above.
once again, if anyone can help, i'll greatly appreciate it. thanks!

- Windows XP Setup >> Fast User Switching Unable to switch back to acct once switchedHi. I don't know if anyone can help me but lately everytime I use fast user
switching to switch from one account to another and then back the screen goes
black and I am unable to switch back to the original user account. I have
to reboot the computer. I can log off of one user account and then log onto
the other user account but it defeats the whole purpose of Fast User
Switching.

- Windows XP Support >> Windows XP repair Install questions...Good Morning everyone,
Without going to far in depth, I am considering doing a repair install
of Windows XP because of the problems that are accruing after I
transfered everything over from my old hard drive to my new drive (see
http://tinyurl.com/5922fv for the full details of my previous post).
The main concern that I have is not losing all the app's/files that I
already have installed; how safe is repair install? What are the odds
of losing everyting? Note: I have created a backup on a separate drive
using the Windows XP Home backup.
I do have my Windows XP reinstallation CD (provided by Dell), what I
can not find is the key; is there a key required when you do a repair
install?
Do you have any suggestions/recommendations that may not be already
posted throughout the web?
Thanks,
Ron

future but up till then, I guess I am stuck with the ball mouse.. :(

- Windows XP Hardware >> old hard drive information transferI don't know if this is possible but I put together a new
system and am wondering if I can slave the old hard drive
and transfer the information to the new system rather than
trying to put the old one back together and trying to
transfer it through a network.
I have win xp pro on the old hard drive and it is a maxtor
30 gig.
The new system is xp corporate and the hd is 250 gb
