- Windows XP Network >> clearing the ARP cacheI have a computer, which I would like to attach to a home router, with the
router, in turn, connected to a DSL modem. The DSL modem is of the type,
which does its own username/password sign-on, and just provides a WAN IP
address to the router. So, the router is not set up to do PPPoE sign-on; it
just accepts its DHCP IP.
My problem, evidently, is in the networking plumbing on the PC. When the PC
is connected to the router, usually, the router appears to lose its ability
to pass on web browsing requests, within ten minutes or so. If the router
is restarted, normal webbrowsing from the PC resumes. If the PC is
restarted, no webbrowsing.
On the PC, if I go to the Local Area Connection > Status > Support tab, and
click on the Repair button, the PC reports that the operation failed,
because it was unable to clear the ARP cache.
Under Local Area Connection Properities, where it lists the "items" used by
the connection, including TCP/IP, there is an entry for a Speedstream ATM
thing. I cannot select it, and uninstall; when I try, I get an error, and
the dialog becomes unresponsive and has to be closed. I have it unchecked.
I think it is a leftover from a Speedstream DSL modem, which was used with
this machine a long time ago. I don't see anything in Add/Remove programs
obviously related to this.
I read, KB99150, Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) Cache Functions.
I would like some advice on how to proceed.
I conceive of my goal as getting the network plumbing associated with this
network connection on the PC back into a "plain vanilla" state, where it
will work in a default configuration with a Linksys consumer router.
Could I install a new network card into the machine, without contaminating
its network plumbing?
Will procedures relating to Winsock2 corruption or reinstalling TCP/IP have
any effect?

- Windows XP >> Disk Cleanup stallsWindows XP's Disk Cleanup is stalling on me all of a sudden.
I choose Drive C:, and then run the Cleanup. It starts at "Scanning:
Compress old files" and it sits there like an idiot for minutes and minutes.
Anyone else ever have this happen? How do I fix it?

- Windows XP Security >> Administrator or not?I have had problems with WinXP Home Edition for the two
years since I've had it with installing new software,
etc. I often get a message like "access is denied" even
though I think I'm the administrator. When I do finally
successfully install software it does not show up in the
Programs menu on the Start button -- I have to install an
icon on the desktop to run it.
If I go to "User Accounts" ny name is listed as a
computer administrator. When I run regedit (something I
learned from this newsgroup) and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Current
Version\Software, right-click, and click Permissions my
name is not listed as an administrator.
I'm in over my head here. Please help!

- Windows XP Hardware >> Caller IDHello,
I am currently running Windows XP Pro and also have an
external voice/fax/data full duplex modem. I am using
HotFax Message Center 5.0.1. Even though I have caller ID
working through a seperate answering machine and I know
it works via that, nothing is showing up through HotFax.
I used to have Caller ID working perfectly using the same
HotFax software using Windows 98 with a different modem.
I went to the SmithMicro website (for HotFax) and all I
could find is information for Windows 95, referring to
installing UnimodemV. I have downloaded the unimodemv.exe
file from Microsoft, but want to know if that would work
with Windows XP, before I install it, or if there is
something else I need to know and/or do. Thank you in
advance (:->}

The same if a try to >right click>open> in windows explorer. But if I first
run the associated program (Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, and so on) there
are no problems. How can I fix it?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Missing oleaut32.dllI rebooted my computer and it would not start up because oleaut32.dll is missing. I cannot do anything on my computer, all it does is show my background. Could someone please tell me how to install this file onto my computer with these circumstances? Right now I am typing this from a remote computer with the same operating system as the one with the missing file.

- Windows XP Hardware >> DVD drive ok, but media not recognizedI have a new Dell GX270 and installed an Ultima DHM-G48
DVD drive. The device is recognized by XP as Drive E:, the
Device Manager says the device is working properly and the
drivers are ok, however no matter what type of media I put
in the drive (audio, CDROM, DVD) XP always thinks it's an
audio CD and shows just one track 'Track00.cda'.
I put the DVD drive into another Dell machine running
Win2K and it works fine.
Any idea what my problem is?
Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP Security >> Is there a way to write a script that will run security scans? When it comes to Scripting or macros I am almost 100% ignorant, but what I
think I know is that scripting is writing steps to be taken when it is run.
So is there a way to make your script run a program, such as a security scan
and updates for you? Ideally all you would have to do is run the script and
leave, never having to do the monotonous tasks yourself. Could someone
enlighten me?

- Windows XP Network >> Networking Two PCs & LaptopHi,
I'm trying to network two desktop PCs and a laptop. The
two PCs are already networked with ethernet cards and a
direct cable between them. I went to my local computer
store to find out how to network all three for sahring
brodband and they said i need a ethernet modem( mines
USB) and a router.
Can I not just buy a router connect all three up between
it. Then set up the network and share the USB Broadband
connection from one of the computers?
Any help is appreciated.

- Windows XP >> wuauclt.exe stuck on...Hi there,
Windows XP and the "wuauclt.exe" is stuck on in the task manager after boot
up. It makes the processor run at 100%. I can end the process manually and
that takes care of it for a while, then it comes back on again.
How do I get rid of it so I can make the computer run normally again?
Thanks,

- Windows XP Hardware >> Changing Sound Devices ShortcutI have 4 different sound devices connected to my computer (for Skype a USB
speaker phone and USB headset, for music a traditional speaker system, and a
cheap mic for making draft voice recordings).
I have these questions:
- it is very combersom to go through control panel each time I want to
change sound devices. Is there anyway to put a short cut on the desk top
(etc.) to click to choose which device?
- I don't understand the difference between the Audio tab and the Voice tab
in Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel. I always make changes in the
Voice tab, but would like to understand the differences.
- it is very combersom to change volumes when you change a device. Is there
a way to set the default volume on a device? Remember, since two of the
devices are USB, they may unpluged from the system from time to time.
Thanks for your help.

- Windows XP Network >> How to see remote shard folders - and how to hide them ?The current situation in my small inhouse-LAN is as follows:
I can access remote shared folders if I enter directly the UNC path like
\\192.168.0.56\myremshare
But assume I would NOT know the name of the remote shared folder:
How can I list all available shares (even if my local account is not existing at the
remote computer but I know another, existing login name and password for the remote computer)?
Additionally is there a way to explicitely prevent the display of all MY OWN
shared folders to other computers/user in the LAN ?
I remember that there is a special setting for this behavior.
Are the folders visible or NOT visible by default ?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Hibernation Problem in XP HomeI am the sole administrator and user on a Compaq Presario

- Windows XP Network >> WinXP IPsec ICF bug?!Hello,
I have encountered a strange problem.
I've set up a WinXP-Freeswan 1.98b ipsec tunnel
connection.
Everthing works fine if I disable Internet Connection
Firewall (ICF).
If I enable ICF I can only get ping replys. Firewall
blocks every oher connection. In pfirewall.log I can see
that the firewall drops TCP 40,48,60,68 ports.
How can I set ICF to allow protocols 47,50,51 (ESP,AH).
I can allow UDP port 500 (IKE) with no prob. Or specify
that the local addresses (192.168.x.x) are not filtered.
Thanx for your help

- Windows XP >> 'Can't find requested string' ?All right: so what is the point of XP(Pro) telling me this without telling
me what string it is looking for?!
There is an icon which I do not recognize in the Control panel - sort of a
blue lozenge - alongside which is 'Can't find requested string'.
A similar symbol appears with the same epithet on one of the
Display/Properties/Advanced tabs.
'Can't find requested string' also appears three times in the right click
screen dialogue.
The advanced tab version seemed to be monitor details, so I reloaded the
monitor driver, but this has made no difference.
How do I trace these faults and correct them?
Thanks in advance,

- Windows XP >> Catelog of Event IDs and SourcesI have been working on a problem involving some errors in my System log. I
was able to solve the problems, but it seems like the process was more
difficult than it should have been because I had a hard time figuring out
from the error code exactly which service was causing the problem. I had
some 4008 and 4010 errors and the LPDSVC service was the source. It turns
out that the TCP/IP Print Services service was not started. The problem was
that the information I found regarding these errors never indicated a
linkage between LPDSVC and the TCP/IP Print Services service. If it had,
starting up that service would have been my first move. It would be handy
if there was a list along the lines of the following:
Source Services
-------- ---------
LPDSVC TCP/IP Print Services
any other service that are related to LPDSVC
Is there a way to get a list, or is there a catalog somewhere, of all the
error sources and their corresponding services?

- Windows XP >> Adobe Gamma Loader / Praxisoft WIZYWIGCan anyone tell me if "Adobe Gamma Loader" (in MSCONFIG | startup), needs to
be loaded at startup ?
I've ended up in complete confusion again regarding "color profiles."
My XP, in "Color Management," is showing the *.icc profile that was created
and named by the Adobe gamme *.icc creation procedure,
If I install and run a similar procedure using Praxisoft's WIZYWIG
http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1B.html that ends up in MSCONFIG
| startup as well. Yet it's function is to create an *.icc profile which is
/ can be set in Windows Color management to be the default Windows monitor
