- Windows XP Update >> PC fails to get past windows xp screenI recently installed the latest windows updates. My
computer now won't get past the Windows XP splash screen.
I get a black screen with a white cursor and that's it. It
also does it in safe mode. I installed my windows xp on my
second hard drive in my computer so that I could view the
files on my original hard drive. I can't even acess the
first hard drive through safe mode so I can't do a system
recovery. The files that I have found that have the
corresponding dates are numbered KB883357 and KB833987.
Does anyone know anything about these numbers and which
update they belong to? Also does anyone know how to
uninstall the recent updates since I can't get at my
original Windows? Any help would be appreciated. I'd hate
to have to start all over again.

to copy files normally from the disk in the CD-Rom

copying a few of the files. Several of the balky files
did successfully copy after pressing 'retry' (enter)
repeatedly. However, one of them finally just wouldn't
go. I am getting the message:

performance is incredibly slow and the signal to the LCD display that I have
comes and goes while the desktop periodically freezes.
I have tried restoring to 1 and 2 weeks ago when performance was previously
fine, however this fails to rectify the problem.
I have done virus scans and run spybot - both are clean.
Computer runs ok in safe mode so I have been able to back up files.
Any pointers anyone - should I just go for a full reformat - it has been 2
years since I have done so.
I have 1GB ram, AMD 3500 CPU and gigabyte motherboard.
I have tried connecting another monitor (CRT) that I have and the problem
remains - so evidently it is not the LCD.
Any ideas anyone - I have been unable to find anything on the net or in the
XP knowledge base to date.

Sorry, last item is to click Search, not OK, for there is no OK.
When it finds the folder hover the mouse over it and it will tell
you the location.

Windows XP Setup >> Where did Program Files go? in Win XP?
Well, I tried it and it did find a number of Program Files, but none for
Drive H, where I have all my programs installed.
Going to Explore on that drive also shows no Program Files (which were
always there), yet the Properties show that 13.5 GB are installed and so far
I see that all programs seem to work.
Checking with 2 programs for a Virus also showed none and my programs, as I
said, seem to work.
BUT - I like the Program Folder back, because I cannot make a selection
without that folder.
Very mysterious. Never had such a thing happen in 10 years.

Go to My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View
and check Show Hidden Files and Folders.
The folder you are looking for more than likely is hidden.

The download keeps on asking for Association. that bugs me. There is no
association since this is the first Acrobat Reader 7.x download.

- Windows XP Network >> Network Bridge woesHi all,
I'm having problems getting the network bridge option in windows xp to work
correctly.
PC 1: Wireless (static ip 192.168.0.21 255.255.255.0) connects to wireless
router (static 192.168.0.11 - which in turn connects to ADSL router
192.168.0.10). This configuration works fine and I have no problem
connecting to the Internet. This PC also has a wired connection with a
static ip address of 192.167.0.10 mask 255.255.255.0
PC 2: Wired connection only with a static ip of 192.167.0.11 mask
255.255.255.0. The wired network works correctly. I want this pc to be able
to access the Internet using the others' wireless connection, i.e. using PC
1 as a bridge.
I initially had the problem that the wireless connection stopped working
when joined to the bridge but I solved this by manually forcing
compatibility mode. What happens now however is when the bridge is created
it has an ip address of 0.0.0.0 (I have no DHCP) and consequently there is
no connectivity from the bridge. I have manually assigned an IP address to
the bridge and all three connections show as 'connected' in the network
connections. BUT, no matter what IP adress I give the bridge, I receive a
windows system error that there is a duplicate ip address on the network as
soon as I try to use the internet! There are no other machines on the
network so there definitely isnt a conflict and I'm at a loss as to what is
happening here. I have so far tried about a dozen different ip addresses but
always with the same result.
ANy help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Steve

access my internet options on the control panel also and nothing. I realy
need someones help. It seems as if these options may have been removed
somehow. If I did this somehow, I have no idea of how to restore them or if
they can even be restored.

- Windows XP Support >> Shutdown always says installing 1 updateThe topic says most of the story, Have a new laptop that exibits the
following behavior:
1) The updates available icon in the taskbar is NOT being displayed
constantly.
2) At shutdown, it always displays the install updates and shut down option,
indicates that it is installing 1 update, and we repeat the process every
time i turn the machine off.
Norton Internet security is what it has on it for A/V and such ... not that
Norton would EVER cause an issue like this one ... LOL!
Thanks in advance for any ideas. I'm not afraid of working in the registry,
but I don't have clue one where to start looking, and blindly poking around
in the registry is not a good strategy

- Windows XP Support >> USB Exterior HDD questions?Hi,
Just bought a Coolmax 310 USB Exterior HDD Enclosure. (Probably won't
be shipped unitl next week)
Thinking of installing one of two spare HDD's into the Enclosure.
a: Would the HDD require Windows if I use it exclusively for program
storage and file backups?
b: Without Windows , will I be able to exec a program or simply
transfer it from exterior to interior drive? And if so, won't that mess
up the registry? I'm so confuuuuuused!
c: If the HDD has ONLY Windows XP loaded, I'd like it to be an
emergency replacement HDD, (in case the interior drive goes south), in
the meanwhile using the remainder of the space for storage and
backups. That I believe (hope?) would be OK?
ThanX and truest wishes for a great Thanksgiving Holiday!

- Windows XP Support >> Should I do this deletion??I have XP Home.
I remember a suggestion to go to START/RUN/%TEMP% and then to delete all
files found in there.
I have about 800 files there (almost all .tmp files but some other folders
as well -- ADOBE, VBE, and a couple of others).
Can I safely delete these files??
(Perhaps I should first empty the recycle bin, then delete the files, and I
can then restore them from the recycle bin if there is a problem).
Also, is this a large number of files and is my computer likely to be more
"perky" after such a deletion?

- Windows XP Security >> Tough question - get your thinking caps onI need to remotely edit the HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft key, in order to
add the Security subkey and the CheckAdminSettings dword value required for
use with Outlook Security Templates.
Unfortunately, this is a "restricted" key, and only the Administrators have
full access. I've tried using SMS Installer to create the entry
progammatically, and have also tried using "regini.exe" from the Resource Kit
to change the ACL on the key prior to performing the edit. The result is
that, apparently due to the need to run with administrator permissions, the
current user key is bypassed and the entry is made in the Default User
context.
Does anyone have a reliable method for getting around this behavior? The
machines targeted are not necessarily single-user machines, so it's not as
simple as just making the users administrators on a temporary basis. I would
also like to avoid having to use multiple reboots to change the ACL on the
key, make the edit, and then restore the ACL on the key.
Thanks for your assistance!

- Windows XP >> Missing xp functionsIn the process of trying to recover from a failed installation of a new
software program I had to use system restore. It has worked in the past but
this time got hung up. When I rebooted many of the functions, such as Help &
Support and System info. will not run. Some programs also will not run. What
can I do short of aWin reinstall to correct this. If I counld get to System
restore I think i would be ok. Thanks.

- Windows XP Security >> FTP and Service Pack 2I just installed Service Pack 2 for XP Pro.
And now I can not connect to my FTP sites?
Other computers in our network can, and I could this morning, but now it's a
no-go.
I did turn off the firewall that came with SP2.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
