- Windows XP Setup >> Disabling the Ctrl_Alt_Delete requirement for XP logonI am using XP professional loaded PC to log onto a server
running Novell 5.O. I would like to disable the
requirement for users to press the Ctrl+ALt+Delete
sequence when logging onto the server. According to
article no. 308226 in the Microsoft Knowledge base I
should go to Control Panel, chose User Accounts, then
chose the Advanced tab, followed by the Secure Logon, then
clear the "Require Users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete"
checkbox. I am not able to effect this becase on my PC I
do not see any "Advanced" tab under the User Accounts
option. Please advise.

- Windows XP >> labels are blank...I have an XP machine, and when I move my mouse over an icon or button such as
the Start Button, the yellow label that pops up and describes what this
feature is, is blank. I've tried everything I can think of, but cannot find
a solution. The labels are there, there is just no text inside of them. Is
there anyway to get the text back? Thanks.

- Windows XP Network >> XP, 98 and read-only filesHello,
Not sure if this is an XP or 98 issue. Here is the situation - Client has a
small workgroup with a central machine (win98) sharing a printer, internal
and external hard drive. All machines are in the same workgroup and there is
no full control password set on the win98 box for the shares. The XP machines
can map a drive and create a network place for the shared drives and can
access stored data. The problem is that when a client is done with a
document ans saves back to the server they get a prompt to save with a new
name and they cannot overwrite the original. This is happening on multiple
workstations and applications, even the server is unable to delete the
original file as it is still stamped as archive or read-only. The client
machines are running all the latest service packs and hotfixes.
any thoughts?
Thank you

- Windows XP Setup >> Install wizardWhen i want to install new software, the install wizard starts and says its preparing to install and goes up to 100% and then it locks. I have to use the Task manager to close it. Then, maybe five or ten minutes later, it suddenly goes to the blue screen and starts installing normally as though its got a mind of its own. However, Sometimes it doesnt go to the blue screen at all and sometimes new software installs without any of these problems.
This makes installing any new software a bit hit and miss. Hope someone can help.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> CPU Always @ 100% running PeoplePC - Norton - IE 6.0.28My machine was fine until I installed PeoplePC.
Now the machine is slow and useless when bowsing the web.
It is only running Norton Firewall, Internet Explorer and PeoplePC
dialer.
The main culprit seems to be PeoplePC dialer.
As far as I can see the peoplepc setup seems to mess with System Files
and System Registry. (installed in C:\Program Files\ISP50\)
Would I fix this if I reinstall IE?
If yes how can I reinstall IE on a XP machine?
I do not see IE in the Add/Remove Programs.
(I hope to fix this problem if I reinstall all the files packaged for
IE.)
Any information on how to restore IE files will be very welcomed.
Any other information is also welcomed.
FYI:
They are aware of the Memory & Resources Consumption problem.
They even seem to have a fix.
I contacted them, the answer was:
"Regarding your concern, to resolve this behavior, manually remove and
reinstall the dialer software. Please ensure that you are NOT
connected to the Internet before following the procedure Given below."
And also "Now, you will need to download the new dialer. Please follow
the steps given below" A copy of the isp_50_setup.exe is also attached
along with this e-mail.
I never received the attached files. I received only a link to an
empty web page.
Please don't send me direct emails at this address, use the newsroom,
or go to http://contactez.net/portfolio.html

- Windows XP >> WinXP System Verification Error in STREAM.SYS WDM driver error 23bHelp! Please!
My IBM Thinkpad WindowsXP all of a sudden won't boot properly.
I'm at my wit's end on what to do to debug & repair.
I can't even tell if it's a hardware or a software problem.
I get a dark blue screen with 2 lines across the top saying -
SYSTEM VERIFICATION ERROR IN STREAM_SYS
WDM Driver error 23b
I booted to safe mode with networking and searched for stream.sys.
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePack\stream.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\stream.sys
But, I don't know what to do with these same size same date files.
In safe mode, I ran verifier.exe and it only found a couple of
drivers. I ran sigverif.exe and it found only one unsigned driver
(whatever unsigned means) which was -
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\csmbatt.sys
I went to the device manager and found a "PM" device, whatever that
is, which had a caution icon next to it and reinstalled that driver
using the troubleshooter.
I even tried to run the Windows Recovery Program but it failed to run.
Alas, my IBM Windows XP machine still won't boot except to safe mode.
Windows XP is a cryptic program to me as the error means me nothing.
Do you know how to solve a "WDM Driver error 23b"?

Boot with F8 for Safe Mode
Prompt window for Logon/password

After 1 second I saw Logging on, then Logoff, then
Prompt window for Logon/password again
I entered Administrator with blank for password
PC then went into safe mode.
Any idea why I am getting 2 logons?
Any idea or suggestion on how to determine what is happening?

- Windows XP Support >> Lost and frustratedHi.
Hope someone can help me. I recently had the sasser worm
removed from my computer. So far so good I can again
access the internet etc., but it seems either the virus
left some chaos or when I got the sp2 update it messed up
something.
My problem is this - whenever I try to download (anywhere
except winupdate) I get a message stating: "Internet
explorer was not able to download (name of file) from
(name of site)
Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet
site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot
be found. Please try again later."
It does this everywhere I try. There is no exceptions.
Also I can no longer change any defaults on my system. I
mention this only in case the two are related.
If anyone out there can help me I will be most
grateful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Some basic movie capture questions...Am using WinXP-pro PC and got a Sony digital camcorder that does movies to
tape and MPEGs to memorystick. I'm about to buy the IEEE 1394 firewire, I
suppose it will come with some software but I think I'll start by using
Moive Maker 2. Ok, for some amateur quesions (but greatly appreciate
patience and answers)...
How does the "transfer" or "record" process work to get the movie off the
Sony Digital tape (Hi8 I think it's called) and into the PC's hard drive?
(In the really old days, when you wanted to copy a VCR tape, you cabled a
player to a recorder, pressed "record" on the recorder, and ran over fast to
press "play" on the player.) Surely digital is far more advanced without
human delays, so what's the sequence of steps to get the transfer started
and finished?...
-Step 1. Connect Sony DV camcorder to PC with firewire
-Step 2. _______
-Step 3. _______
-Step 4. _______
-Step 5. _______
-etc.
Ok, so once it's transferred, does it appear in MM2 and then do I "save" it
as a project file onto the hard drive? What "format" or de facto standard
do I save it as so that it's either non-lossy or the least lossy possible,
i.e. so I could theoretically send it to 100 relatives and they would have
an identical copy.
Is there a "rule" like for every 1 minute of digital movie, it takes ____MB
in the _____ format?
Lastly, let's say I do edits, add titles, transistions, fades and so forth.
Is it true I re-save it in the same non-lossy format of _____, and also save
it in a format of ____ so that people with players can watch it? What kind
of players do they need...is Windows media player the most universal? Is
there a format (like mpeg) that about every player could surely read? Are
recipients able to pull this movie off and transfer it to a DVD to put in
their home Sony DVD player next to the TV? Is resolution any good?
Thanks,
George

- Windows XP >> Using UNC path through Start->Run causes continuous authenticationHi all - I have a very odd problem on a Windwos XP SP2 computer. I am
not sure when the problem started happening, I only noticed it when i
joined the computer to a new domain, it may have gone unnnoticed
beforehand as this is not my computer.
Basically, when I try and access any remote computer by clicking on
start then run and typing in \\computername or \\ip_address all that
happens is the start bar and all open windows flicker slightly and also
when the start menu is clicked it disappears again immediatly, also
windows reset to their start position when trying to be dragged. It
basically seems like explorer is getting in some sort of loop.
I noticed that once this process has begun (it never stops) network
traffic is constant, so I used wireshark to determine what was going on
'on the wire' - I saw that two conections get opened to NBSS (139), the
first one tries the SMBSERV service name and gets a name error, the
second then tries SMBSERVER and gets a name OK, the second connection
then tries authenticating as the locally logged on user and gets an
authentication error (as expected, as the local account does not exist
on the remote conputer). At this point I would expect explorer to
prompt me for a username and pasword, however it does not and just
keeps trying and trying, each time opening two new connections, the
first repeats the rpevious process and the second is issued an RST
before it gets to do anything.
So basically explorer seems to sit there autheticating over and over
and does not stop. The odd thing is that if I start an explorer window
and type the exact same UNC path in the address abr I get asked for my
credentials, I supply them and all is well, if I then put the same UNC
path in the start->run menu all is well also, yet if I try a new UNC
apth in start-> run the same problem occurs.
Anyone got any ideas? It doesn't seem to be the underlying SMB or NTLM
that is the problem.
As a last note - most of the test was done after I disjoined the
compyuter the domain thinking that the domain may be causing some
issue, however the same symptoms were exhibited both when joined to the
domain and when disjoined, the only difference was that when joined to
the domain the user account would become locked out as it attmpted
authentication too many times.
thankyou
