- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Cannot delete folder on serverHello,
I am trying to delete some old folders off of our server, and cannot do so.
The error that I get is "Error Deleting File or Folder, Cannot delete file:
Cannot read from the source file or disk".
As you read on below, you will find a more comprehensive explanation of my
problem, along with 2 attempts to fix the problem.
A LITTLE HISTORY OF HOW THIS OCCURED:
This is is how these folders were created in the first place.
About 4 months ago, I had to come up with a way to back up (automatically) a
certain folder on my hard drive to the server, on a daily basis. I found
this program called "Karen's Replicator". One of the nice things about it is
that it will allow you to create custom pathing based on the current date,
which was good in the event that I needed to go back to a certain date backup.
When I was subsequently (after copying all of these folders to an external
USB-HD) trying to delete these folders that were created by the Replicator,
I discovered that some of the folders had an additional character (actually
it is a space) at the end of the date. Upon further review, I discovered
that if I went to the folder, hit F2, sure enough, you could see that there
is a space between the last visible character, and the blinking cursor. I
tried to remove the space, tried adding another character, and each time it
says "Cannot rename file: Cannot read from the source file or disk".
So the bottom line is that each and every one of the folders that are
UNDELETABLE contain this space at the end of the date. An example of the
path is this X:\Data\Local_Drive_Backup\BB_05-19-06 . Note that there is a
space after the 06 BEFORE the period.
WITH REGARD TO USING DELETE FXP AND KILL BOX:
I tried to use both DeleteFXP and Killbox, and got two different responses.
On the DeleteFXP, since the folder is on our network (as I had indicated
earlier) it won't work unless I want to pay for the ProLicense. On the Kill
Box, when I navigate to the folder, select it, and then click "Delete" it
says "File does not seem to exist".
WITH REGARD TO USING RMDIR:
Also, with regard to the DOS command RMDIR, that did not work either. It
says "The system cannot find the file specified".
Any more ideas?
Thanks in advance for your replies.
Phil.

- Windows XP >> Wndows update choicesCan someone answer these questions please?
- Is the "Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML)" update critical and really
necessary for all Windows users? Why? I read the description and I didn't
understand it well enough to make a choice. I just use my PC for email,
photo editing, specialied shopping and scientific information. Not too
happy to keep adding XP updates unless they are really useful to the kind of
user I am.
- I still have IE6. Again I have read on updating to IE7 and do not see too
much of a gain in updating unless I am not aware of special benefits.
Please comment, I always learn from responses here.
Thanks, Joan

- Windows XP >> Problem with Downloaded Program FilesI have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro (SP2) and current
MS updates installed (except for month of Jan 2007). I looked at the file
entries in the Downloaded Program Files (C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program
Files) and noticed the status of many of the files were listed as DAMAGED.
There were more of the DAMAGED files than listed below, but I was able to
right click on some of the files, select the update command, and the file
status then become Installed. However, the files listed below, when I
selected update, no status change was noticed. I clicked on these files
again and the update command was not listed, only the remove and properties
commands
were then listed as available.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated in how to resolve the below
problems. Thanks Sam.
1. Active X Control {01010E00-5E80-11D8-9E86-0007E96C65AE} DAMAGED

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Cisco switch upgrade turns XP performance to crapsome network upgrades have created total disaster here.
we got gigabit feeds, the network was segmented to different subnets by
floor of the building, and a new Cisco switch was installed in one of
the FDFs that services 2 Windows 2000 servers.
There are now a handful of XP client workstations that are impossible to
use. After login, it's taking >5 minutes to see the desktop. Access to
files on shared, mapped network drives (to the two servers) is taking
forever. One client double clicked on a folder, and thinking it had
simply hung up, went on to do other things. 20 minutes later, the
window with that folder opened up.
I've compared configurations between machines that work fine and the
ones that don't, and I can't see anything really obvious. The BASIC
networking configurations are the same, though the hardware is a bit
different in many cases.
All are Dell's; Dimension workstations, Poweredge servers, some have
3Com NICS, some Intel....
I'm at a loss.

- Windows XP Support >> Error MessagesHello Everyone....
I hope someone can help me. Lately I have been receiving two error messages
on my system. It appears to be in the TEMP file area and they are rather
lengthy.
c:\docume 1\used\locals 1\temp\wer. cbd5.dir 00\mini081207-.02.dmp
c:\docume 1\user\locals 1\temp\wer cbd5.dir 00\sysdata.xmd
There are little squiggly horizontal lines where I have left a space before
the numeral one and other areas of the error message where I left a space. I
guess there is some way to type them but I do not know how.
Can someone please give me an idea what is going on as this problem is is
creating other problems on my system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Gordon

Windows XP Hardware >> any way to work around a laptop without the *fn* key?
The Keyboard on my Dell laptop broke. Dell says it is the motherboard and a
replacement keyboard will not help. So I am using an external Keyboard.
Only problem is: There is no fn button on that, and I have no way to adjust
the screen brightness!
Any idea?

If you don't want to change it really frequently the display management from
your video card company will usually have a brightness that works well. Intel
/ ATI for sure.

Since it works with an external keyboard you've the mobo must be ok.
I don;t think there is a way to remap the fn key however...so your present
kb probably cannot handle that function

- Windows XP Hardware >> RED and BLACK USB connector??Hello,
I bought a 4 port sharing USB hub :
it connects 2 computers to 4 USB devices , so you can switch the usb
printer, mouse, flash card,
it's easy : you can write a flash card with PC A and push the switch button
of the flashcard on the hub and it's connected with PC B .
My question is : the hub has no power adapter , but a RED and a BLACK USB-A
connector, but only one USB-B connector, to connect to the hub, for each
connected PC .
Do i need to connect BOTH the RED connectors to the 2 PC's or is 1 enough ??
can anybody explain me how this works having 2 connectors at one end of the
USB cable??
thanks paul
the red is for power supply and the black is for data.

When I see file properties for the same file from explorer on WinXP

What could be the possible reason? Is there any way to show all

1) I have scanned for anti-virus but no virus was found.
2) I have uninstalled the Norton Utilities 2003 and re-installed. Same case

Pls suggest what to do.
My computer has been infected with W32.Blaster.Worm and I run FixBlast.exe
to remove the worm - some files are deleted. However, afterwards, it is
found that it is unable to connect to the internet, send/receive e-mail even
though the system shows the broadband line is connected. Even re-install the
Windows, the problem still there. I would like to know how to solve the
problem. How to find out what files have been deleted?
