- Windows XP Network >> Firewallnot active but peer to peer says it isI have two XP Pro machines networked thru a peer to peer...with the slave
machine connecting to the web thru the masters dial up modem. Works great
except one of the two machines thinks theres a firewall up and running so
the slave machine cannot do some of the jobs we want it to do correctly....
such as video conferncing. All messages sent this way suggests that there is
a firewall up so all video messages must be sent thru a server in order to
reach us.
I know there is no firewall installed and the one that comes with XP is not
active. I have activated it.... then unchecked it again to see if that helps
but it didnt.
Is there another area i can go look to see what might be the problem?

- Windows XP >> DVD writer not recognisedThis is driving me crazy. I'm running XP with 2 hard drives as IDE Primary
Master and Secondary Master. I've had a DVD writer running as Primary Slave
until it died. I installed a new LG DVD writer as Primary Slave and for a
while it worked fine. Then I got all kinds of problems with any of the drives
or the writer not being recognised, PC locking up on the Windows XP screen,
restarting itself, all kinds of issues. I discovered that by removing the LG
drive everything booted up OK. Then I tried putting the LG drive as Primary
Master, and the 2 hard drives on the secondary IDE, and everything was
sorted! For 48 hours....
After numerous uses of the PC with no problem, the problem has come back. On
boot up, the DVD writer is not detected, and when the PC eventually boots
fully, I cannot access it.
I am at my wits end. The LG drive has been reported on the net as having
some issues with being recognised, but the problem is intermittent.
ANY help appreciated!

- Windows XP Hardware >> High speed device plugged into non-high speed portI've been having this problem for several weeks and can't seem to fix
it.
I have a DFI Ultra Infinity motherboard, Athlon XP 2500, Windows XP.
The motherboard has six onboard USB 2.0 ports that work fine.
I added a four port VIA VT6202 PCI USB 2.0 card about six months ago,
and it worked fine. I then bought another VIA VT6202 PCI USB 2.0 card,
as I needed more USB ports, only this card had a slightly different
number on the VT6202 chip (after the VT6202 there is another number on
each chip). The new card only worked at USB 1.0, and every time I
plugged in a USB device, it would say "High speed device plugged into
non-high speed port" and suggest I plug the device into one of the
ports in bold type that can support a hi speed device.
I think it's possible that the old card's drivers are still in the
system, and have automatically installed themselves for the new VT6202
card, which is a different make, and that may be why it isn't working.
http://www.geocities.com/usbproblems/usbproblem3.jpg
In this picture the first device is the motherboard's USB, with four
external hard drives plugged into it, and the second is one of the PCI
cards.
http://www.geocities.com/usbproblems/usbproblem4.jpg
This picture shows one of the PCI cards, but none of the connected
devices are showing that they are connected, even though they are, and
they are accessible.
http://www.geocities.com/usbproblems/usbproblem5.jpg
This picture shows the USB devices in Device Manager.
I have had SP1 installed since it came out, and have just upgraded to
SP2, but with no luck.
I've taken out the two VIA PCI cards, and put in two NEC based ones,
and they have exactly the same problem. They come up with the same
message about a non-high speed port, so I'm not sure what's going
wrong.
Does anybody have any ideas what I should try? I've checked all the
drivers for the USB cards, and uninstalled and then reinstalled them
from the supplied driver CDs, but that hasn't worked.

- Windows XP Basic >> Unable to reset Read Only on files/foldersI have a few data folders and files (not program files) on which I seem
unable to reset the "Read Only" attribute.
To reset I right-click on the file and then click on Properties. The first
thing I see is a green rectangle to the to the left of "Read Only." I click
on the green rectangle to remove it from the check box, then click on
"apply" and then on "OK."
When I return to the Properties of that file, the green square is back and
the file
is still "read only."
Can anyone tell me what might be going on?
Thanks

- Windows XP >> Windows Update : Order of installationWhen using Windows Updates (on XP Home), when the list of Critical Updates

Also, is it generally best to install the updates individually or "en-mass"

- Windows XP Network >> NIC works, but no networkingI am repairing a home computer for a customer. He claims the Internet
access stopped working "suddenly". The problem is the NIC won't
"Obtain an IP Address Automatically" from the server, although its
set to do so on the "Network Settings" and DHCP server is running
on the server (I have other computers in the house attached to the
network). I tried booting Linux from a CD-ROM (without installing it)
and the computer connects to the DHCP server, gets an IP address and
connects to the Internet.
I have tried deinstalling the network driver and installing the latest
version from the DELL website. No luck. Re-Installing is the last thing
I want to do. I appreciate any ideas.
Thanks,
Erasmo.

- Windows XP Setup >> Erasing DVD's / CD'sWith a DVD-RW and a CD-RW, when ERASING to use again, is the FAST erase just
as functional as the FULL erase .. or does it really matter ?
Also, should I "Format" the disc before using it again?
when saving a program to a disc (for example), how do I force the disc not
to close so that I can continue using it?
I am also having problems with being able to play pictures saved on a DVD on
the DVD player with the tv, and with a CD being able to play on the stereo..

Thanks for any assistance or suggestions.

popped up saying - The application or DLL

Can I sort it with my boot-up disks and if so how?

- Windows XP Setup >> XP and WORD - Won't follow HyperlinkI am using XP Pro on my Thinkpad, and when using WORD 2003
and you come across a hyperlink, normally you hold the CNTL key
down and click on the mouse, and it will display/take you to the link.
However, with XP it gives an error message, displaying the link
and saying it can't find the server. I'm pretty sure it's not
connecting to the Internet. I wonder if anyone else has had this
problem, or is it just my machine? Any suggestions?
Thank you.

- Windows XP Network >> strange dns problemI have an XP workstation that will not resolve the IP
addresses of search engines correctly. For example I
can't go to search.msn.com, www.google.com,
www.lycos.com, etc. If I try to ping any of these, I get
the same address for all of them. 207.44.194.56. If I
do an nslookup for any of them I get the correct address.
I have tried using different DNS servers in the network
setup, and have checked the hosts file. Other computers
on the same network using DHCP do not have this problem.
I have run "ipconfig /flushdns" and get the same result.
If I clear the dnscache using the above command and then
do a "ipconfig /displaydns" I get a long list of the
search engines all with 207.44.194.56 as the A record. I
have run "net stop dnscache" and still get the same
results when trying to connect to the web site or ping.
Any ideas?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Graphic Problems-No DisplayI have a strange problem. A friend was using my computer and while messing
around, he deleted the graphic card I was using. Now, the PC and windows
seems to start fine but once windows xp kicks in, everything goes black. I
can see the HD light working so I know things are going on in there, but I
just can't see anything. I've attempted using different cards in there(all
same family, diff. models) but have the same problem. Is there a solution to
this problem or is it time for me to upgrade?
