- Windows XP >> Forgot winXP passwordMy son needs help. He is 14 and lost (can't remember) his
XP Home Edit. password on his computer. He is the only
one running as admin. to keep his sister from getting in
to his programs and homework. First, how do we reset the
password? I have searched the web and came up with two
solutions; one is to literally *hack* the password (seems
harsh to me), or to use the "control passwords2" command
(this seems moot as you must have admin. to use the
command, see above). Second, what is the best way to
setup the login so this won't happen again? Dad's
computer reputation is at stake here.

- Windows XP >> Task scheduler doesn't run after WinME->WinXP HE upgradeI've been fussing with problem for weeks now - for some reason Task
Scheduler apparently will not recognize my administrator account - a note on
the Knowledge Base indicates that there have been problems of a different
sort when upgrading from Win98/WinME to WinXP.
Have tried various work arounds, tweaks, registry edits suggested here - the
main problem seems to be that when I did the upgrade, the system
"remembered" a former username, even though that account didn't exist after
the upgrade. I have tried renaming my administrator account to that name,
but that doesn't help.
Another possibility that has occurred to me is that Norton Antivirus and
Internet Security may have something to do with this, and I am thinking
about uninstalling them and re-installing - but that seems like a long shot,
and since I'm on about my third over-the-net upgrade with Symantec, I'm
concerned I might have to go out and buy a complete new set if they won't
let me upgrade from the original disk.
Everything else works fine - just this one problem with Task Scheduler,
which is really annoying as it prevents automatic security updates from
running by themselves.
Any thoughts?

is,
"Windows cannot find 'chkdsk/f'.
Any thoughts?

- Windows XP Setup >> Prob upgrading to XP Home from MEWhen trying to upgrade I received a report stating that my
modem may not work with windows XP. As a result I tried
to use the update program within windows xp setup to
update the setup files.
The problem is that as when the program tells me it is
downloading the updates, the system checks the floppy
drive and then hangs. The small meter on the screen which
signifies activity freezes. The hard drive light stays
lit but without activity.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP >> Uninstalling Windows XPI want to uninstall XP, but I previously had Windows 95,
so I had to use a "New PC" cd. The uninstallation option
isn't in the control panel. How do I uninstall it? Also,
I didn't overwrite the old W95 files, so they're still
there.

System Restore is turned off for safe mode.
Any ideas as to how one should proceed?

- Windows XP >> XP Loading to Black ScreenWindows XP boots up normally and begins to load with the
bars scrolling horizontally across the screen, theres a
brief glitch in the image, then the screen goes virtually
black with several colored pixels at the top edge, barely
noticeable. The computer is then frozen and must be
unplugged to reboot properly. Windows will load fine in
safe mode, and I have tried several restores to no avail.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> curser stops for few seconds
I see where this question was asked before but didn't see
any answer. Just got back from a trip, fired up my home
computer which worked fine when I left 4 days ago but now
the cursor - in any program it seems - especially in
Adobe Photoshop though - does not function smoothly. It
keeps stopping for a few seconds. Checked the roller
ball - no dust bunnies there. Any ideas?

- Windows XP Network >> WEP Authentication for Wireless LANA while a go I set up a wireless LAN with a WG311V2 Netgear PCI wireless
card connecting to a Netgear WGR614 router and used WEP encryption, all
worked OK. I then after about 6 month I decided to change to WPA encryption
and had issues where on bootup it would not connect some times.
I have now fallen back to the WEP setup and can get it to connect only after
selecting repeated repair options. Once it connects it stays up but when I
boot up the next time the connection won't establish again. If I turn
encryption off I don't have any issues.
I'm using the Windows Networking to configure the WEP and keys etc.
Does any body have any ideas

- Windows XP Network >> No Ping Response; everything else OKMy Thinkpad XP Pro laptop has stopped responding to ping requests.
Network connections seem otherwise normal: I can ping other computers
on my network, I can see the laptop and its shared files from other
computers, etc.
I have tried everything I could think of. I disabled all firewalls. I
used msconfig to start with no non-microsoft services and no startup
programs. I took the computer off the network and connected directly
to a voip box, logged into the voip box, and tried to ping the laptop
from there. The laptop will just not respond.
The laptop does successfully ping itself (localhost or 127.0.0.1).
From any other device, a ping request just times out.
What could be causing this? What else can I try?
Thanks.

- Windows XP >> Referenced memory can not be read??I posted this a few days ago and someone referred me to
this: http://aumha.org/a/shtdwnxp.htm
I didn't seem to find this problem on the website, so I'm
posting this again to see if anyone else has an idea.
Thanks in advance, and also thanks to the person who
responded before.
ORIGINAL POST:
I have always had this problem with my computer since I
bought it a year ago. I am getting an error message
sometimes when I shut down my computer.
The error reads as follows: Referenced memory
at "0x00000008". The memory could not be read.
It does not seem to affect my computer in any way, and I
simply acknowlege it, and the computer shuts down
nomally. Is there any way to do away with this error? It
only happens when I shut down, but not on every attempt.
Thanks in Advance

- Windows XP Network >> D=Link WirelessHi,
I have a D-Link Wireless USB adaptor (MA101), the
drivers are installed it appears to work fine. But when
I load the network properties (Selecting a wireless

anything but cancel. The other XP machine I have does
not do this. Even if there is no wireless connectivity
around wouldn't the box be white and have nothing in the
box?

- Windows XP Support >> Cannot install german language support for english Word 2003 installationI am getting the well known "Cannot find proofing tool for german (Germany)" error popup when
I opened a Word document with Word 2003.
According to some recommendations I went to menu
Start->Programs->MsOffice->MsOfficeTools->Ms Office 2003 Language Settings
After analyzation of the current MsOffice installation a dialog pops up
where on the right (="already installed") side german is already listed but greyed out/disabled.
Maybe this is because I used an english MsOffice 2003.
So I have I problem: I cannot add german (Germany) from the left side to the right
side because it already exists. Moreover I cannot remove it (for later re-adding)
on the right side because it is disabled.
Why ist german greyed out/disabled ?
How can I otherwise add "german (Germany)" language support ?
By the way: Adding "german (Austria)" language support does NOT help/remove my
original "Missing proofing tool" problem.
Why are hundreds of languages available on the left side but not "german (Germany)"?
Is the language support for one language embedded in a single file which I could take from another
computer and copy it to the local installation ?

- Windows XP >> Task ListIs there a way to print out the running task list from the Task Manager?
Alternatively export the list?
I have about 75 tasks running and want to go through them and remove the
unnecessary ones, but without a list to work from the screen switching is
getting tiresome. I would also like to keep the list so that the next time I
re-load Windows, I already know what to turn off.
Any Ideas out there (besides a screen shot)?
