- Windows XP Support >> DOS FILES under XPA client of mine is trying to run an old DOS program migrating to a
new Windows XP system. Last week their test was working fine. Now
the program is doing some initializing but not finishing it and
stopping. They say they haven't changed anything, and they have tried
it several times, including rebooting. From the error message they
are getting and the place the program is bombing out, they need more
DOS FILES available. The old "FILES=xx" in DOS. Is there a way to
set the number of files for a DOS program under XP?

- Windows XP Network >> IP address assigned to Dial-up ConnectionAfter creating an incoming VPN connection on a XP Pro PC
I notice that when I check my adapters and IP's
using 'ipconfig /all', I see an additional IP assigned to
the PPP adapter RAS Server (Dial In) Interface. Is this
refered to as a 'virtual adapter'? The other IP address
accociated with this PC is listed under the NIC adapter.
This IP is statically configured on the XP Pro. What is
really puzzeling me is on the menu (IP addresses served)
of the router that issues the addresses DHCP, I see that
the same PC has four IP addresses that have been assigned
to it not including the static IP on the machine. When I
make the VPN connection I notice under the 'details' tab
in the 'properties' of the connection that two of the
IP's are listed, one as server and the other as client.
All in all there are five IP's aasociated to one PC that
has one NIC adapter and a Linksys switch between it and
the router issuing IP's by DHCP. The DHCP pool contains a
limited number of IP addresses that are public type
addresses. Whatever is taking place is using up more
addresses then I would like. Is there any way to reduce
the number? Thanks.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> MS Backup problems. Reasons?...I'm using WixXP-pro, with all the updates, would appreciate help on
understanding/solving this problem with "MS Backup" from a MVP or someone
very familiar with it.
Thanks,
George
----------------WHAT HAPPENED----------------
Yesterday I tried to backup PC's C: drive to an external USB "E:" drive.
The E: drive is fairly new, and was also recently re-formatted.
Backup ran very stop and go, paused for as long as 2-3 minutes at many
points, displaying odd files, doubt big, not sensible pause.... Ultimately,
it created maybe 8-10 warnings in the report, then eventually did early shut
down of MS Backup after about only 18,000 files and 5.2 GB backed up
(presumably). The total bytes on this PC is more like 20 GB. I made
another attempt, but same story. Here are both attempts...
The warnings in 1st attempt were things like..
WARNING: Portions of "C:\Documents and Settings\George's files\
.........(very long path/filename)..... cannot be read. The backed up data
is corrupt or incomplete.
WARNING: Unable to open "C:\Documents and Settings\George's files\
.........(very long path/filename)..... skipped. Reason: System cannot find
file
The warnings in 2nd attempt were things like..
WARNING: Unable to open "C:\Documents and Settings\George's files\
.........(very long path/filename)..... skipped. Reason: The semaphore
timeout period has expired
Could not access portions of directory "C:\Documents and
Settings\George's.... You may not have permission to open... or the
directory may be missing or damaged
----------------WHAT ACTIONS TAKEN----------------
So, I did a few things...
a) Defrag C:drive
b) Used "Disk cleanup" to get rid of temp files (but still there are MANY
(100's) left in C:\windows\temp
c) connected the external drive with its 2-foot cable directly to PC (it was
previously connected thru 6-foot extension cord, or thru USB-7-port-HUB)
d) replaced the 100GB external USB drive with ANOTHER external drive that
happens to be 200GB
c) Re-booted PC
d) Re-ran the backup...it went very fast...only a few brief pauses on
known-big files...report was perfect backup.
----------------QUESTIONS----------------
What was most likely possible reason(s) for the first two failures?
( )likely. ( )unlikely. ( )unsure. Needed to defrag, that really fixed it
( )likely. ( )unlikely. ( )unsure. Too many temp files. Clearing them out
did the trick.
( )likely. ( )unlikely. ( )unsure. Temp files lower now, but you still need
to clear the remaining 100's
( )likely. ( )unlikely. ( )unsure. USB extension cord was a problem.
Shouldn't use a 6-foot extender cord because ____
( )likely. ( )unlikely. ( )unsure. External drive bad, even if clean and
recently formatted, sounds like hardware was bad
( )likely. ( )unlikely. ( )unsure. Re-boot was needed. This was what only
thing needed to succeed
( )likely. ( )unlikely. ( )unsure. Path/filenames too long. WinXP-pro has
a limit (or bug with) path/file #characters exceeding ___
( )likely. ( )unlikely. ( )unsure. Graphics card or driver problem (other
symptoms of this going on), encounters grahic files and stalls/trips

- Windows XP >> Multiple Troubles (IE, ActiveX, DirectX)Having the following problems:
IE will not do anything involving cookies (email, etc)
IE reports that ActiveX settings are wrong
IE will not reinstall with file from MS
DirectX 9 will not install (fails to copy file)
Possible Clue:
Message comes up and says that IE and ActiveX aren't "XP
approved," (when trying to install them) despite the fact
that they come from MS.
I've tried adjusting all my security settings, nothing
works. These seem to be related problems, but i can't
figure out exactly what the issue is, and I'm using
Netscape for the time being, which seems to work. Let me
know if any of you have thoughts.
Thanks!

- Windows XP >> WindowsXP Local PolicyI think someone changed some settings on my son's laptop
at college, he has WindowsXP home edition and he have
never used a password to logon to windows. Now it is
asking for a password when it boots into windows. I
tried all of the trouble shooting such as leaving it
blank, safe mode, I even made a boot disk to change the
password. Nothing has worked. After entering the
window's password an error screen comes up saying "the
local policy of this system does not permit you to logon
interactively".
Can anyone explain what I need to do to correct the
problem? I tried to use Partition Magic to create
another partition so I could install WindowXP Pro but it
would not let me resize the partition. Not being able to
start windows is a problem plus I think I need
Administrator rights to do this. Is there any way to
change back the local policy to permit you to logon?
Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Adding hard-drive - XP UpgradeI'm adding a new hard drive. My old one has become
tempermental and unreliable, plus I've messed things up
with some bad programs so I'm going to replace it. I used
to run Win2000 Pro but I bought the Windows XP *Upgrade*
to change operating systems. I plan to use the new hard-
drive and remove the old one. The question, then, is
this:
When I add my new hard drive, I want to start from a clean
slate - so can I install WinXP on the new hard drive
cleanly with the Upgrade disk?

- Windows XP Hardware >> video capture card recommendationsI am getting set up on my computer to convert my Camcorder tape
collection to DVD's. I have a P4 computer with 256 MB of RAM, Win XP
HE, 2 hard drives, (one 40 GB and one 80 GB) a new Pioneer CD burner,
both Nero and Ulead software. My next step is to purchase a video
capture card. I had a bad experience with an el cheapo Video capture
card, (lip sync problems) and when I went to the manufacturers web
page in hopes of downloading an instruction manual, they didn't have
one. (This was an ATI product) I returned that video capture card and
got my money back.
Looking for recommendations from those of you that have walked this
trail before me on video capture cards, the good ones and the ones to
stay away from.
TIA Loring H
A post thought. My camcorder is an older one that is analog, not
digital. Is that going to be a factor in my video capture card
selection?

- Windows XP >> No System Checkpoints - Why?Hi - My System Restore has stopped issuing regular System Checkpoints. They
used to be created about every 2 days. It seems to have stopped when I
updated to Adobe 7.08. I also found QuickTime didn't work either and had to
reinstall it!
Also when I download anything now, the date the file was created is always
the date it was downloaded, why is this happening? - Thanks for any info
regarding these two irksome problems. - Andrew.

- Windows XP Support >> Obtaining an IP address at startupI have a new dell with windows xp. When I boot it always defaults to the
default IP address. I must do an IPCONFIG /release and renew in order for it

I have other computers on the same network and do not have an issue.

- Windows XP Network >> Wireless security problem.Hello,
I have a mshome network thru a hub with on attached via a wireless
gateway which also is a gateway to the Internet.
I have tested security from the internet and the firewall is fine and my
network can't be seen however..
I had a friend over with his wireless laptop and he was able to get to
my network via Network Places etc. I had to tell him the network name,
still it registered as insecure.
In Network properties I set the Wireless connection using the WEP with
windows giving the security number automatically and it says it is
secure, but obviously isn't.
How do I secure my wireless network with XP?
Thanks
