Windows XP >> Finding a utility program to get rid of dupe files This is not really a windowsXP question, but perhaps someone can point me in
the right direction.

I have a bunch of back-up disks and files on my drives that I want organize
and eliminate all duplicates.

What I need for the first pass is a utility (DOS or windows) that will
search out all duplicate files (same name, size, date) on my hard drive so I
can eliminate dupes. It would also be great if it could find just same-name
files so I could selectively save only the latest versions. What's around
that might do that for me?

Thanks for suggestions.

Windows XP944

Windows XP >> Finding a utility program to get rid of dupe files Checkout EasyCleaner, it has an option to search for duplicates. However I
would caution that what you are interested in doing could be very dangerous
to the health of your computer, if you don't know what you are doing.

Windows XP >> Finding a utility program to get rid of dupe files I just searched for duplicate files on my D: partition (60 gig) using Total
Commander. The search took about 10 seconds and turned up over 100 dupes.

Suggest you try this program. It is one I would never be without.

Yes: there will be a lot of configuration files that have the same name
but entirely different contents.

Windows XP >> Finding a utility program to get rid of dupe files And what do you do with duplicates ? Many dlls are duplicated, some for
backup in system, some by programs in their folder although also exist in
windows etc.
How do you choose which you can delete ?
Is it worth the pain given the big drives we have ?

You'll find lots of programs with that capability. Try a search engine, or
software download sites like www.download.com
A few names have been mentioned- here's another, but there are lots more if
you search.
Duplic8 - shareware and pretty good. Plenty of options to play with.

Thanks - the duplic8 does a nice job.
$15 is fair enough - I am registered.
