- Windows XP >> Help/Advice on Reinstalling XPI have a series of problems and I think the only way to resolve them is to
reinstall XP. I have the original XP Pro CD and then I have the SP2 CD. I
assume I need to use the original disk to do the install then use the SP2
disk to install that. Of course that will reformat my drive and I will have
to do all the updates and then install Office and the rest of the software.
Am I correct?
Should take a whole weekend I'll bet.....

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> pc going into stanby/hibernationA few pc's on our network are going into stand by/hibernation mode when a
user logs off. We have checked the power management settings (through the
screen saver tab and the local area network configure option) so that this
feature is disabled, but it doesn't always work.
On our network we have domain admins and regular users. When the domain
admins log off this is not a problem. But when users who are not a member of
the domain admins group will log of the network and then the pc will go into
a hibernation mode. Any thoughts on how to fix this? Any help will be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

- Windows XP >> Windows crashes at startup while loading ntfs.sysMy brother recently had the foolish idea of installing linux on my computer
on a seperate hard drive. It looks like it has rewritten the MBR (which
contained Norton GoBack (I think)). Each time I try to start my system, I get
a "Start windows in safe mode" vs "Start windows normally" screen. "Start
windows normally" gives me the windows logo for about a second, then I get a
flash of blue and it reboots. I tried "Start windows with terminal Support"
(I think that's what it was). Everything runs fine, and then when it tries to
load ntfs.sys, it hangs for a second then crashes/reboots. I've started from
a random LiveCD I had kicking around, all the contents of the Windows hard
drive are still there. It originally had Windows Me installed on it. Then
when we upgraded a couple of years ago to XP, we bought an upgrade CD instead
of a full CD. And either we never got that CD back from FutureShop, or we've
misplaced it. What can I do to fix my system so that I can finish writing my
essay for school? (without reinstalling anything).
Cheers,
Ryan

- Windows XP Hardware >> Floppy drive inoperative after disconnectOK, I had to borrow the floppy drive cable from my Win XP machine to
temporarily use on a friends PC (he didn't have a cable and we wanted to do a
clean install of Windows 98.)
When I put the cable back into my machine (Yes, it's connected properly!),
the floppy (A:) drive is not recognized. The light on the front panel doesn't
blink or anything. When I go into the BIOS setup, the order has (Removable
Media) as the first choice, then my C: drive second. The A: drive does not
appear in Windows Explorer nor does it appear in my device manager. Power
cable is connected firmly, too.
This seems like such a simple problem to fix but I'm stumped. Yes, I know
there is the possibility that my floppy is smoked but really, all I did was
turn off my machine, unplug the data cable and after a few hours use on
another machine, plugged it back into my machine.
Yes, I did power up my machine while the cable was out. Could this have
caused XP to turn off looking for the floppy?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> very irritating problem. PLEASE HELPHi everyone,
I have a very irritating problem with my PC. I'lli give
you some examples to undesrtand my problem better.
When i have 2-3 programs running simultaneously, and i
switch between them through the taskbar, it takes forever
for one programm to come to front. In other words it
takes about 10 seconds from mouse click to maximize a
program.
This also happens when i push Internet Explorer buttons
such as BACK, FORWARD e.t.c
It also happens when i try to write something in a text
box, say my address on a webpage.
Is it memory related? If i add memory will it fix it?
Thnx

- Windows XP Update >> checking on Updates does not work properly / no Errorcode!Hi, I have a before decribed problem with checking on updates: it ends in
"site cannot be displayed/ Server or DNS not found" with subjects to check on
at internet options.
I checked on all of that and on part of the Errorcodes at the Supportcenter,
but did not decide to follow all because no Errorcode appeared.
Only the first 3 Updates came in properly after new Installation of XP home
Ed. SP2 : since then it is stuck.
Inbetween automatic update activated somehow in the Background and works
(analog Modem already more than 2 Hours for 30% ?)very slowly within the
Security center.
Still I cannot check on the available Updates.
Anyone has an Idea ?
THanks , Mike

- Windows XP >> Trying and failing to reformat single HDHave a very curious issue. I have a very old laptop. It started w/WIN98,
then used an upgrade version of XP home to upgrade, then of course used a
download of SP2 and all updates as the update tool recommended.
Here is the issue though, as the the machine is about 5 1/2 years old, and
running horrible i want to blow away all of the hard drive w/a reformat and
then reinstall just the most current s/w i need at this point. When i try to
enter the portion of the setup that covers reinstalling windows and
reformatting, i get no option to continue, as the disk version of XP is older
than the version (SP2) currently on the machine.
Do i need to format the HD from the c: prompt somehow, or is there another
way?
My plan had been to disconnect from internet, reformat, install XP, then
install my Norton AV, zonealarm, and spysweeper -- connect to the internet
and redownload SP2 and other updates from MS site. If you have a way to
reformat, is that an appropriate way ahead. THANKS

- Windows XP Security >> How to export/import user accounts?Hi,
We have a stand-alone Windows XP computer where local users are able to run
only some specific applications. There are multiple local users for the
system. The user accounts are used only to access the applications.
The system must be initialized every now and then -> we restore the system
from initial image. BUT during the life time of the system there of course
will be new users and some users are removed. Is there any standard (and
legal) way to export current user accounts (with passwords) before the system
re-initialization is done and then import those users after the initial image
is re-installed?
Thank You,
Tero

Windows XP Network >> Inbound connections limit in Windows XP - Article ID: 314882
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;314882
The final portion of this article states:
Per development: The connection limit refers to the number of
redirector-based connections and is enforced for any file, print, named pipe,
or mail slot session. The TCP connection limit is not enforced, but it may be
bound by legal agreement to not permit more than 10 clients.
What does the "Per development" and "bound by legal agreement" refer to?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Multi NIC'sOk, I know you can configure xp pro for your email, ftp, http services on
your ethernet.
What I am wondering is if you can configure multiple NIC's as a load
balancer. I have a Gb nic and a 10/100bT built in to my system, using xp
pro, not 64 bit.
Is this feasible?? Or is this exclusive to a different OS??
I just bought and built an amd 64x2, 1GB RAM.
Thanks in advance and have a great weekend

- Windows XP Network >> Bad network Utilisation. My Local Area Network works but how do I utilise the
10/100mbps network running in my house. At the moment I
am getting about 250kbps which is not enough for my
needs. I am using good quality cables and the network
cards are installed correctly. I do use a switch instead
of a hub but the network is still too slow. I want to
know if there is any thing that I have to enable to make
it run faster(like a protocal or somthing that I have to
enable/disable).
I am using Windows XP SP1 and my machines are two 2.4s.
