this is basic troubleshooting and I'm stuck ? I've recently started to
update my computer with the SP2 and when I downloaded the files the box
requested to shutdown. upon restart the system hangs and the OS load is
incomplete. Now
I've have to find a way to get the box to start without losing any files.
This is my main box and it was upgraded from a ME operating system. I don't
have a CD to work with and I don't want to do a clean install. any help would
be greatly appriciated

I use the VPN for work e-mail, but how do I keep the VPN
connection from popping up and trying to load?
Thanks!

- Windows XP Network >> PPTP Client not connectingHaving a strange issue with a single client. Launch PPTP, attempts to
connect; but doesn't. Using ethereal; I see the TCP traffic between server
and client; but the session doesn't establish. The problem appears to be in
the specific PC; as several others PC on the same network work just fine.
The PC is running Windows XP with SP2.
Does anyone have a thoughts or ideas to the cause of the problem?
Thanks

- Windows XP Setup >> dual boot NT and XP...I have XP Pro installed and working well on a separate NTFS partition. I used to run NT4.0 and have discovered several legacy apps. that will not run on XP -- only on NT... So...
I want to set up a dual boot with NT4.0 SP6 and XP Pro. I've used Partition Magic for years so my question is not about setting up the dual boot but about the NTFS support under XP and NT.
I have several NTFS data partitions that XP has converted to its NTFS version. According to Microsoft, NT4.0 SP5 and above support 'most' of this NTFS version. I want to install NT on its own NTFS partition and give it access (eventually) to the XP NTFS data partitions. The problem is it will be the 'old' NTFS version (when I format the partition during the initial NT install process) until I can get SP6 applied.
Will I run into problems with NT 'looking at' the XP NTFS data partitions while I do the NT install?

- Windows XP >> New Hard DriveI am about to install a new hard drive (80GB)on my PC
which is running the upgrade version of XP Home. I want
the new hard drive to be the master & run under the
upgade XP Home & use the old drive strictly as a backup
drive.
I do not want the old drive to be accessed by XP except
as directed by me.
What is the best method to do this? Ghost the old drive
to the new, reinstall XP to the new drive, etc.
Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> activexI have my security setting (as suggested by MS) set so that the warning:
'your security setting do not allow web sites to use activex controls
installed on your computer...'
Clicking on this banner does not give the option al allowing THAT site to
use the activex controls - what settings will allow a happy medium?
There are some sited I trust (most I do not) so I would like the choice.
BTW I think that at some time I would get this warning and clicking on the
banner would allow me the choice of run activex or not.

- Windows XP Security >> SP2 works great but...First of all let me say that after installing SP2, my XP is working great! I
know that is hard to believe, but so far, I like the changes (mostly
security ones). I have noticed a behavior change with SP2 that might be by
design. Before the upgrade, I could go "Start-->Run" and the drop-down list
would contain several files that I had recently used. After installing SP2,
the list seems to be cleared every day. Is this one of the SP2 security
precautions? (I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, CW Shredder, HijackThis and
have run a virus scan. No problems.)

- Windows XP Hardware >> Can I plug in a wireless in my Netgear FR114P Firewall routerI hope you guys are not laughing at me, because I just don't know about this
issue. I sit in one room of the house and like to use my laptop (wireless
needs to be used via a PC card slot, not build in) in another room. Can I
plug in a wireless setup into my Netgear ProSafe Firewall router? Which unit
should I buy, if you care to advise me. I like the Netgear product, we use
it at work, and have little trouble with it. I use Win XP Home w/SP2 on the
desktop, and XP Pro on the Laptop w/o SP2. Many thanks in
advance.........Peter

- Windows XP Support >> Boot problem - no system (Sony Vaio RA820G)When I boot my system, a Sony Vaio RA820G running XP Media Center,
normally from HDD it fails to boot, with a message 'no system'
displayed.
On booting from CDROM with the ultimate boot CD (UBCD) and selecting the
option 'boot hard drive 1', ie a direct 'boot 0x80' instruction, the
system boots without problem.
I have tried a FIXBOOT and FIXMBR from the recovery console, both to no
avail.
Any suggestions as to how to fix this issue would be appreciated.
The problem first surfaced some months ago when a Windows update was
applied.
Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> Strangely Screen RefreshHello Experts,
I'm facing a problem on my PC,
every 20-30 seconds windows blinks like doing some refreshing.
For example when open (from tray) the date & time properties (double
click on the clock):
1) picking another month from the combo box
2) waiting 30 seconds
3) automatically returns to current month (March '07)
This blinking is obvious anywhere in windows. Another example is that
the language indicator in taskbar, disappears and then appears again.
Finally, some times when working on MS Access 2003, I'm trying to copy
a value from the datasheet of the table and paste it somewhere else.
Copy fails in first or second time.
I think that some spyware might cause this but I have installed
"spyware doctor" to protect my PC. Of course not all Anti-spyware
protect us from spyware. I always keep it up to date.
Can you please help me with that?
Software installed in my PC:
- Windows XP SP2
- VNC Server 4.0
- SQL Server Developer Edition 2005 SP1 (Full)
- SQL Server Migration Assistant for Access
- MS Access 2003 SP2
- Office 2003 SP2
- IE 7

- Norton Antivirus 2006 Ver. 12.2.0.13

- Windows XP Security >> Why does a user ONLY in the Guests group have Users permissions? If I create a new user and make it a member of the Guests group and remove it
from the Users group (so that it is a member of the Guests group and no other
group) how come the new user has the "effective permissions" to a file system
object as if it was in the Users group? This is very odd behaviour.
I have a file system object that has an ACL with "full control" ACEs for
only SYSTEM, Administrators and OWNER, and a "read & execute" ACE for "Users"
and no other ACEs. The owner of the file is Administrator. If I check
"effective permissions" for my guest account it tells me it has "read &
execute". If I log on as the new guest I can read the file. What is going on?

- Windows XP Security >> Security Warning Re: HotMail After SP2 InstallI have downloaded and installed SP2. When I go to MSN and click on the
HotMail Link a Security Warning pops up and states that "The current web page
is trying to open a site in your Trusted sites list. Do I want to allow?".
The current site is loginnet.passport.com. The trusted site is
login.passport.net. Clicking yes takes me to the normal passport login.
Clicking no results in the page doing nothing. (Probably supposed to.)
I've added the loginnet.passport.com to my trusted sites, (and added it to
allowed popups in the popup blocker), but still get the popup each time.
I've checked the help pages and have found no information regarding this so
far. Is there a way to correct this so I don't see the warnng each time I
want to check email?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Mouse Problem - Please helpI have a problem with my mouse. When I press the left

it then stays pressed until I click again. The button
isn't sticking, it seems not to be recognizing the
Release event. I've tried different mouses, both serial
and USB and all have the same problem. Tried loading
lastest version of software for mouse and that doesn;t
help either. Anyone have any ideas as to what may be
causing the problem ?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Can I delete all restore files from D drive-It's full.I am in need of urget help before my PC dies. I have a Presario 56500NX with
partitioned drives. All of my programs and files are saved on C drive. C
drive capacity is 144GB, free space is 124GB with 86% free space. Drive D is
a totally different story! Capacity 5.14GB Free space is 982MB with only 18%
free space. I researched it, and on both drives did "disk cleanups", "file
compressions", uninstalled programs no longer used, defraged both drives,
deleted all "system restores" with exception of current date. I copied my 1
system restore to disks. Can I now go in and delete all the files on D
drive. HP support advised me to un-install my OS and reinstall. Will that
work??? I really don't want to hose my PC...I use my PC to work from home.

- Windows XP Security >> How do I fix Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-039 (824146)Does anybody know how to easily download patches without
using windows update? Whenever I go searching for a new
critical patch I get directed to windows update, but my
administrator blocks the port so that I get an "Access
Denied". It's almost impossible to actually find the
patch manually, even after I found the appropriate
security bulletin it only has a link to windows update.
The only patch I've ever been able to find is the one
that fixes MS Blaster because the patch executable file
was actually listed under available downloads. What's
the problem with microsoft here?

- Windows XP Update >> Pardon my bluntness, but...I am seeing all these errors with the February critical updates, then
I am seeing posts to go to such-and-such site to find out how to
_repair_ what MS update did to your computer.
Question: Why doesn't MS just make available an update that works??
I'm not downloading _any_ updates (especially the Windoes XP ones)
until I am _totally_ confident that:
a. I won't lose my internet connection
b. Won't have to visit 10 sites to correct _their_
error
c. Am confident that my anti-virus will still _work_ after an
update.
d. I'll take my chances on what I have now. To hell with MS.
Who do they think they are: God???
