- Windows XP Setup >> I AM SO FRICKING MAD I WANT TO CHUCK THIS THING IN THE RIVER XP SHI i have been working on trying to reinstall windows for the last 6 hrs I
have several xp pro disks that all have valid and legal product keys the
problem I have is that through the course of life they have become scratched
alittle here nd there not one of them will play all the way thru without
giving me the "cyclic redundancy" line so I thought that i would take parts
of each one that the others couldnt give me and make and burn one new cd with
all the right stuff... which I have done onlyroblem is that now apparently
the "manifest file does not begin with the required tag and format
information" I am 1/2 of the way into this installation and the installation
under it is toast ....question the 1/2 way thru set up was done with one of
the cyclic redundant cd' ...how can i get rid of this partial inStall and
start over?? WITH my new super cd and will it work or has bill gates done
something to each cd ' manifest because he was worried that he wouldn't be
able to shake every last dime out of us or that some one might steal
something that mixing and matching doesnt work and is there anywhere other
than a warez site that microioft might have to download with a valid key
another working copy?? that matches?

When I attach either my Digital camera or MP3 player to my computer I
get the "USB Device not recognized" error message. I then took the mp3
player to my laptop and plugged it in and it recognized it fine. Both
of the systems are windows XP Pro. Any clue why my first computer is
having a problem and how I can fix it without having to reinstall
windows?? I do have a USB Printer that is recognized without a problem.

- Windows XP Support >> can't install fax--file copy errorI had this file copy error before when I tried overinstalling xp and
everyone said it's a hardware problem. But then I reformatted and did a
clean install and everything was ok, and I could overinstall after that. So
it's apparently a software problem. I'm just giving this background info so
no one jumps to the conclusion that it's a hardware problem. Well, I tried
adding the fax software from Add/Remove Windows components and it prompted
for the disk. I put in the disk and it went to the i386 folder but gave a
file copy error. I extracted the files to my hard disk with Winzip but still
not able to copy. How do I figure what's causing it?

- Windows XP Network >> Home networkI have 4 computers using HPNA (home phone network adaptor) and a router.
I set up a home network (titled HOME) on all computers.I have 2 problems.
1. Everytime a computer is rebooted I have to re-set up the home network on
that computer. Why is it losing the network setup?
2. I seem to be unable to share one of the printers on the network - a
Canon Pixma ip4000. I went into printers and faxes and selected share
printer. But I cannot see this printer from any of the other computers. Any
ideas why I can not see this printer on the network?

installed, in properties it has a 'recording tab' although the 'hardware tab'

- Windows XP Security >> permissions and rights for multiple usersI am the unofficial network guy at the office. Everyone is on XP Pro and we
are networked on a server running SBS2003. We have 15 users (clients) total.
I have a couple of users who have a bad habit of moving or erasing folders on
the server that we all access, then I have to find and move them back or
restore them from my external hard drive backup. Can I easily keep them from
doing this with setting read and write only permissions for these users? I
cant lock them out of these project folders completely, as they need to be
able to creat or modify documents. But I have to keep them from moving or
deleting folders by accident. Any help is appreciated.

- Windows XP Network >> Network 2000 server, XP pro, and XP home - workgroupHi:
This is my situation:
I've four systems as follow: (A) One PC server with
Windows 2000 server, (B) One desktop PC and a notebook,
each with XP Professional and both joined the domain, (C)
A new notebook installed with XP Home and has its own
workgroup.
Each of the four systems has its own Internet access.
My problems and questions are:
(1) Is there a way for the new workgroup to be part of
domain server and establish some kind of "trust"
relationship, so that they can use the same user account
list in the domain server for file sharing.
(2)In XP Professional and 2000 server, I can browse
domain and workgroup name, and select the computer names
to access. In XP Home, I cannot browse - is it normal and
how can I browse as I did in Pro?
(3) File Sharing: In XP Home, I clicked the shared
folders of the server, it will ask me user name and
password and can be accessed if I entered it. When I
clicked the shared folder of XP Pro (desktop), only a
message box came out saying I do not have the access
right. Not user name and password window will jump out.
How can I solve it??
(4) Any solutions for direct cable connection (using 1394)
between the Win XP pro and XP home? How do I set up for
sharing folders to avoid the need of a server?
Many thanks.
Sincerely,
John

- Windows XP >> XP hard diskHi
I need some info about cloning a XP hard disk.
I have a 9 GB HDD (Fujitsu) with XP Pro on it. I don't have original
installable/Key as I got the HDD from a friend when he upgraded his
PC.
After extensively using my PC (leaving it on for long durations for
batch runs etc), it seems the HDD is close to the end of its usable
life. It makes a strange grinding noise sometimes. I am afraid my all
phd work and thesis might be lost if this HDD crashes.
I have a spare 20GB HDD and plan to transfer everything from XP-HDD to
new one. Since I have installed many software programmes, I just wish
somehow if I can just clone the old XP HDD 'AS IT IS' to new HD drive.
Reinstalling everything will be a sure impossible task and I guess it
will require a lot of time. (plus I even don't have XP pro installable
cds)
Can it be done reliably? I looked at similar posts, but most of the
suggestions seem to be trial/not-sure-to-work type. Some comments say
Ghost works for win'98, some say it doesn't for XP.
I will highly appreciate any help, advice.
Thanks in advance

All the more reason to warn people not to use a Beta product, especially
when there are other, tried and true, programs available that do a better
job.

I still also use Ad-Aware (free version). I would not normally put
beta software on my computer, but I decided to try the Microsoft
program because I was wanted some real-time protection and it was
rated by Consumer Reports as one of the most effective and the
easiest-to-use of the eight anti-spyware programs they reviewed.
So far it has exposed several activities of which I was previously
unaware. All of them were apparently not harmful, but I uninstalled
Nero PhotoShow Express to avoid frequent real-time alerts about it
trying to install itself in my registry as a startup program.

Windows XP Update >> spyware/adware removal.
In my opinion, you ought not to trust in free programs at all,
especially when talk is going about your computer security. That's why
I use cheap, but reliable spyware remover
(http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/privacyexpert/ ). To be
on the safe side, also I have Ad-aware and Microsoft Windows
Ant-spyware, but several times they weren't able to detect and delete
spyware as against Privacy Expert...
