- Windows XP Update >> 823559: Security Update for Microsoft WindowsEvery time I reboot my computer I get a msg saying there are critical
updates. I download the update (823559: Security Update for Microsoft
Windows) and go about my business. It tells me it's successfully downloaded
and installed. Then when I restart my computer, it tells me I have updates.
Its the same update..over and over. When I look at my Installation history
page it shows I've been successful at getting that update 20 times now. What
gives? Why does it still say I need it if I've gotten it that many times?

- Windows XP Support >> Windows reboots itself over and over before windows logo can appeaHi everyone,
Has anyone had this problem? This is the first time I have encountered this.
My computer will be booting up, and right when it is about to go into the
Windows XP loading screen, there will be a brief flicker of a blue screen
(like a fraction of a second), but then the computer will automatically
restart itself and begin the process again. It gives me the option to start
the computer normally, start with the last known good configuration, or start
up in safe mode (with/ without networking), it doesn't matter which option I
choose, the outcome is always the same -- it reboots itself.
Any ideas??

- Windows XP Security >> Moving the "My Documents" folder after group policy is setHeres my problem. I have a user on a laptop and the group policy for the
domain is set so that the My documents folder is "\\%HOMESHARE%%HOMEPATH%"
Thats totally fine for users who are always on the network. But for laptop
users i want to change the settings on those computwer to make the "My
documents" folder local.
When i right click on My documents i can see where the My documents folder
is but i can't change it to a new location. I also don't get the move button
either.
I don't want to play with the setting on the server because for the most
part they work. So Any ideas how to change that setting just for one user
and only on his laptop?
I know i could just make a local profile and i will if nessasary, but hes
already used his computer with the network profile and has preferences there.
Thanks in advance

- Windows XP Security >> Security help in XPI've deployed and upgraded my client's workstation to XP Pro. Its not
connected
to a domain server and it is stand-alone for now. The client wants to
achieve the
following:
a) Create a folder that has many sub-folders, but no users (except for
Administrators)
to delete any file or folder
b) Users are allowed full access to printers, scanners, driver install, etc.
I use Power Users as the group for the users. I created the folder in a) and
limited the
deletion of files to Administrators only. However, I found out that by doing
so, the
user are not able to rename folders such as in the case when they create a
new sub-folder.
How do you overcome this?
I added Load and Unload drivers in the Local Security polices to include
Power Users.
But they are still unable to view installed printers/scanners. How do I
overcome this?
Thanks for any help in advance.

- Windows XP Support >> KB906693 default keyboard layout changes Remote Desktop HOTFIX?The KB article 906693 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=906693 seems to
describe the exact symptoms I'm observing.
That the default keyboard layout changes when using Remote Desktop. I have
installed an alternate layout.
It mentions a hotfix (pre SP3) that solves this problem. Does someone have
access to it? The hotfix is a "please contact Microsoft" instead of a
convenient download.
Thanks,
Ben

setup (includeing print sharing) now pop a login dialogue box with the guest

I have never had any accounts setup (or passwords) so I don't know what to

All of the shares show up on net view and ipconfig/ping shows proper network
config - all the computers see each other. My desktop can access the other
two PCs but they cannot access my desktop without logging in. Help.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Cannot set Power Management for Limited UsersI have setup Power Management settings in the Administrative Account. It
seems that since the Admin account is controlling these settings, that they
should be applied to the other Limited Accounts? When I log on as a Limited

not let me change them from within the Limited Account.
Can someone please advise on how to set this up properly?

- Windows XP >> ICONS DISSAPEARINGHi
I really need some help.
All of the icons on my screen become replaced with new
icons. These new icons are similar to what appears when
windows can not read a file. I can not acces any files
when it is like this. The people that fixed it said it
was a registry problem and restored the registry to an
older save of 2 weeks ago, but said it was likely to
return. They thought that it could be some other software
but i only use what came with the coputer. Can anyone
help me or have heard of this problem.
Tahnks for any help

- Windows XP Network >> Local Area Connection can't connect to router. This one has me climbing the walls. Yesterday NK reported a similar problem with different hardware. I've tried a million things but none seem to work. This is a long description
But here is the situation
I just purchased a Dell laptop, Latitude D800 running XP Pro [Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-163: Service pack1)] to replace an older Dell laptop running Win2000 pro. The old machine worked like a champ.
The laptop is connected (via rj45) to a Linksys Wireless Access Point Router with 4 port switch. (I also would like to use a Linksys wireless card but let's get the cabled connection working first.) The Linksys router is connected to a Cisco 678 router, which is my connection to my DSL phone line. I also have a Dell Dimension desktop (running Win2000 pro) connected to one of the Linksys ports and it has no problem connecting. So, the Linksys and Cisco routers are working well. But I cannot (after many hours of trying and experimenting) make the laptop find the router.
If I go to Network Connections - Local Area Connection, it says enabled. The leds on the linksys router are lit as is the led on the laptop at the rj45 connector. If I select the TCP/IP properties, I have selected "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". This is what Linksys says should be selected and it works fine on my desktop computer
If I check the status, under General, I get that the status is "connected", there is always some time on the duration but the packets sent and received are always zero! Going to support
Address type - Invalid IP addres
IP Address 0.0.0.
Subnet mask 0.0.0.
Default gateway blank - nothing I don't think it is seeing the router
If I click on "repair" I get: The following steps of the repair operation faile
Renewing the IP addres
Refreshing all DHCP leases and re-registering DNS name
Please contact your network administrator or IS
Going to the command prompt and pinging 192.168.1.1 (the IP address for the router), it is unreachable. (On my desktop computer, this pinging works fine!
If I start IE, I always get the "Page cannot be displayed" page, no matter what url I try to find. Further, clicking on "detect network settings" gets me "no connection to internet"
I've tried switching cables and ports on the Linsys router, including taking the cable from my working desktop computer and plugging it into the laptop. None of these help! I have uninstalled and re-installed both the network controller (built in Broadcom 570x Gigabit Integrated Controller) and the local area connection several times. (I'm afraid that this is just adding junk to my Registry!) And I have rebooted nearly an infinite number of times. (After all of the changes!)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. You could also email me at wle@lanl.gov. Thanks!
Bill
