- Windows XP Network >> It was the firewallI came to the group several days ago seeking the solution to my networking
problem. Several MVPs (Chuck in particular) responded with great info and
asked me to come back to the group and share any insights I might have had.
So in that spirit, here I am and here is what happened:
I had/have a desktop Win2K machine and a laptop Win2K machine that
shared/share files with no problems at all. Then I bought a new laptop with
XP Home.
When I tried to add it to the network, it could share files with the desktop
but NOT with the laptop. I tried everything and finally gave up.
Meanwhile back at the ranch ... a few days ago ZoneAlarm announced they had
a new update to their firewall, and I decided to install it, on my Win2K
laptop. They recommended a clean install -- that is, resetting everything.
Suddenly, out of the blue, the two laptops started sharing with no problems.
Here's what happened: Since the desktop and laptop were already sharing
flawlessly, I was lulled into thinking all was well with them, and that the
problem must lie with the new laptop. But in reality I had made the settings
of the laptop firewall very specific, to allow traffic only with the
desktop. Whereas I should/could have allowed traffic in a more general way
(e.g. "any computer in your subnet").
It was the laptop firewall that was blocking access to the other laptop. By
pure chance, the desktop firewall was set in a more general way and masked
the problem.
Moral of the story: remember that *all* firewalls in the net might
contribute to the problem when a new computer arrives. Re-check them to make
sure they're not blocking something.

- Windows XP >> delay between IE and OE view of this newsgroup?I had trouble finding my own post in this newsgroup using Internet Explorer,
so I set up this newsgroup in Outlook Express (following the instructions on
the MS community website). However, when I check the headers for this

Is there some way to get up-to-date messages from the newsgroup in Outlook

alphabetize by name without going to Details option?
Only in the first level of Windows Explorer do the files
order as such. One or more levels down and they seem

I can find no way to set a default file order preference.

- Windows XP >> Can't install IIS on XPI am trying to install IIS on my XP SP2 box and having this problem
I went to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Add/Remove Windows
components
I check IIS and then click OK
The installer starts and then brings up a message window that says "Could
not find staxmen.dell" and pointed to C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
I browsed to the path indicated and found the file "staxmen.dll"
I repoint the installer back to the path and still get the error message...
The other part of the error message says "insert XP service pack 2 disk" The
service pack 2 I have is one I downloaded and is a compressed file. I even
uncompressed service pack2 to a temp folder and then pointed the installer
to that folder still IIS won't install. Anyone know why and what I should do
to install IIS?
Thanks in advance

- Windows XP >> standby problemsI am running a Pentium 2.4 with Windows XP home and whenever I am away
from my computer I put the computer on standby as I've had three power
supplies catch fire and ruin computers. Yesterday I get the message
"the device driver for the 'communications port (COM1)' device is
preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all
applications and try again. If the problem persists you may need to
update his driver."
there does not appear to be any device operating on communications
port 1. The drivers are something like: "serenum.sys" and
"serial.sys"
when I remove these drivers I then get the same message regarding the
modem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the modem but it makes no
difference.
Please help.
Thanks,
Harry

- Windows XP Update >> Windows XP unstable after SP2I am having problems with my system after XP SP2 update. Now my system will
sporadically lock up hard with no option but hit the reset button. There does
not seem to be any one factor to cause this. I can be in any program at any
time or it could just lock in the Windows XP start up window. Sometimes the
system will run an hour, sometimes is crashes the first minute. Now I canâ??t
even perform a system restore as I get an error that states unable to

- Windows XP Support >> complicated multiple file rename problemHi.
I have thousands of files with a name format like:
name-key1-key2.ext
I use the dos ren command like this:
ren *-key2.ext *-newkey2.ext and it works a treat.
Thing is, now I want to complete remove key2 from the filename
altogether and just be left with filenames like:
name-key1.ext.
I try doing stuff like:
ren *-key2.ext *.ext
but it doesn't make any change at all.
My greatest frustration with this is that only 3 weeks ago I had the
same problem and managed to sort it out by fumbling around with many
different attempts at slightly different syntaxes. But it was really
late and I was exhausted and I was thinking I'd never need it again.
And now, here I am needing it again, and I can't remember and I didn't
document it.
Any help or answers will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

- Windows XP >> Standard mouse won't right-clickHi all,
A friend of mine is having trouble with her standard mouse (PS/2 connection)
on a Windows XP machine. She is using the standard mouse driver since the
mouse is a "no name" bought at Office Depot. The problem she is having is
that the right-hand button doesn't do anything. She's gone into the control
panel and changed its settings, but nothing works. She got a mouse from a
friend and it has the same problem on her machine (although it's fine on her
friend's computer). The person who owned the computer before my friend used
a trackball "mouse", so did something get messed up in the registry? Any
ideas?
We haven't tried reinstalling the operating system yet because that takes a
long time.
Thanks,
Bob
