- Windows XP >> Cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\System32.exe'I installed Norton Antivirus '03 and after i rebooted it
said my System32.exe was infected and deleted
immediately. Now when i log into the computer I get a
message that says:
Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\System32.exe'.
Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try
again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and
then click Search.
And all i can select is OK.
I was wondering how can i get this file back, it is
listed in my Norton quarantined list, would I want to
restore it there? I was hoping that I could just
download it off of microsoft.com but when i searched for
the file nothing came up usefull. Thanks to any that can
help!

- Windows XP Hardware >> Will going from 1GB RAM to 2 make a difference in XP?Hi,
It is getting harder and hardar to find RAM for my aging/aged system
and would like to upgrade before I can't find it any more. I need
PC3200 184-Pin DDR RAM for my ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard.
I finally found some Corsair Value Select and Crucial memory at
mwave.com (nothing at NewEgg, Corsair, ...). It is darn cheap at
$72.50 a GB. My system has 1GB (2x512) of Patriot RAM so I need to
replace them with 2 sticks of 1GB RAM.
Will I see improvement or will it slow my system down as I have read
it does to some systems with XP? I develop software, play some
intensive games like flight sims and FPS games, and do some graphic
stuff.
What do you think?

- Windows XP >> Adobe Reader will not launch in XP Home Edition SP 2Just bought a new desktop with XP Home Edition, Serv Pack 2. Have downloaded
and installed Adobe Reader 8.x. System "says" installed correctly and shows
desktop shortcut, but when double click on .pdf files, hour glass appears for
second or 2, then goes away. No file open happens. Tried old versions of
Adobe Reader (7.0.1), exact same results. No error messages displayed
either. So far, this is the only program I am having problems with.

- Windows XP Security >> User Account SettingsI disjoined a Windows XP Pro workstation from a domain and then joined it to
another domain. It was only after the fact that the client changed his mind
and told me he needed to preserve aspects such as:
- Rules from Outlook 2003
- Custom Dictionaries and Auto-Completes in Word/Office
Of course when I asked the client if he wanted me to migrate Profiles he
told me he did not want to incur the expense, but now it seems that it may
cost him slightly more. Does anyone have a way I can retrieve these items
from a User Profile that is marked as Unknown?
Thank you in advance!

- Windows XP >> help with corrupted winsock files on MEI hope this is not thought of as a cross posting, but I would like some
information about Winsock. I have been told that the reason why the pc I am
working on will not show any details when using internet explorer is because
my Winsock6 files have been corrupted? firstly is that right and I have been
told to delete some of these files in the registry and re install them.
My Question is which ones do I need to delete and once they are deleted how
do I only copy the files I need to be re installed. The operating system in
use on this PC is windows ME.
Thanks in advance

Windows XP Hardware >> xp freezes
Don't leave it outside in the snow. Couldn't resist. Go
Control Panel,Power Options. For power schemes select
Always On. Settings for Always On power scheme should
read never never never. That should fix it. I had a crap
monitor that wouldn't come out of suspend and this worked
4 me. Good luck.

- Windows XP >> Disk Cleanup stallsWindows XP's Disk Cleanup is stalling on me all of a sudden.
I choose Drive C:, and then run the Cleanup. It starts at "Scanning:
Compress old files" and it sits there like an idiot for minutes and minutes.

- Windows XP Security >> Is there a way to write a script that will run security scans? When it comes to Scripting or macros I am almost 100% ignorant, but what I
think I know is that scripting is writing steps to be taken when it is run.
So is there a way to make your script run a program, such as a security scan
and updates for you? Ideally all you would have to do is run the script and
leave, never having to do the monotonous tasks yourself. Could someone
enlighten me?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Caller IDHello,
I am currently running Windows XP Pro and also have an
external voice/fax/data full duplex modem. I am using
HotFax Message Center 5.0.1. Even though I have caller ID
working through a seperate answering machine and I know
it works via that, nothing is showing up through HotFax.
I used to have Caller ID working perfectly using the same
HotFax software using Windows 98 with a different modem.
I went to the SmithMicro website (for HotFax) and all I
could find is information for Windows 95, referring to
installing UnimodemV. I have downloaded the unimodemv.exe
file from Microsoft, but want to know if that would work
with Windows XP, before I install it, or if there is
something else I need to know and/or do. Thank you in
advance (:->}

- Windows XP Hardware >> DVD drive ok, but media not recognizedI have a new Dell GX270 and installed an Ultima DHM-G48
DVD drive. The device is recognized by XP as Drive E:, the
Device Manager says the device is working properly and the
drivers are ok, however no matter what type of media I put
in the drive (audio, CDROM, DVD) XP always thinks it's an
audio CD and shows just one track 'Track00.cda'.
I put the DVD drive into another Dell machine running
Win2K and it works fine.
Any idea what my problem is?
Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP Network >> Networking Two PCs & LaptopHi,
I'm trying to network two desktop PCs and a laptop. The
two PCs are already networked with ethernet cards and a
direct cable between them. I went to my local computer
store to find out how to network all three for sahring
brodband and they said i need a ethernet modem( mines
USB) and a router.
Can I not just buy a router connect all three up between
it. Then set up the network and share the USB Broadband
connection from one of the computers?
Any help is appreciated.

- Windows XP Network >> clearing the ARP cacheI have a computer, which I would like to attach to a home router, with the
router, in turn, connected to a DSL modem. The DSL modem is of the type,
which does its own username/password sign-on, and just provides a WAN IP
address to the router. So, the router is not set up to do PPPoE sign-on; it
just accepts its DHCP IP.
My problem, evidently, is in the networking plumbing on the PC. When the PC
is connected to the router, usually, the router appears to lose its ability
to pass on web browsing requests, within ten minutes or so. If the router
is restarted, normal webbrowsing from the PC resumes. If the PC is
restarted, no webbrowsing.
On the PC, if I go to the Local Area Connection > Status > Support tab, and
click on the Repair button, the PC reports that the operation failed,
because it was unable to clear the ARP cache.
Under Local Area Connection Properities, where it lists the "items" used by
the connection, including TCP/IP, there is an entry for a Speedstream ATM
thing. I cannot select it, and uninstall; when I try, I get an error, and
the dialog becomes unresponsive and has to be closed. I have it unchecked.
I think it is a leftover from a Speedstream DSL modem, which was used with
this machine a long time ago. I don't see anything in Add/Remove programs
obviously related to this.
I read, KB99150, Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) Cache Functions.
I would like some advice on how to proceed.
I conceive of my goal as getting the network plumbing associated with this
network connection on the PC back into a "plain vanilla" state, where it
will work in a default configuration with a Linksys consumer router.
Could I install a new network card into the machine, without contaminating
its network plumbing?
Will procedures relating to Winsock2 corruption or reinstalling TCP/IP have
any effect?

- Windows XP Security >> Administrator or not?I have had problems with WinXP Home Edition for the two
years since I've had it with installing new software,
etc. I often get a message like "access is denied" even
though I think I'm the administrator. When I do finally
successfully install software it does not show up in the
Programs menu on the Start button -- I have to install an
icon on the desktop to run it.
If I go to "User Accounts" ny name is listed as a
computer administrator. When I run regedit (something I
learned from this newsgroup) and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Current
Version\Software, right-click, and click Permissions my
name is not listed as an administrator.
I'm in over my head here. Please help!
