- Windows XP Network >> does my IE ignore the hosts file?i know that after you enter a domain name into the address bar of your
ie, you computer first will check your hosts to see if there is any DNS
entry to match that domain name. if yes, the computer will use the
corresponding ip to see a request to the server. so i think if i put a
wrong entry into the hosts, see, the ip of A corresponds the DNS of B.
i just wonder after that if i enter the DNS of B, my IE will bring me
to site A, NOT B. but i can't success. what's wrong? can anyone help
me? thank in advance.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Drive size limitation in XP?I remember seeing an article that had a patch for hard

article after multiple searches. I'd like to know if
anyone is familiar with the article as I'd like to have
it on-hand prior to installing a secondary hard drive
(200GB).
Also, if I turn on windows update, will it automatically
downloads these types of patches?

- Windows XP >> Transfer XP Pro To New ComputerI'm still confused about transferring XP Pro to a different machine. Here's
my summary: Couple of years ago I purchased a laptop online with XP Pro
installed. Did not come with install CD, did not have hidden restore
partition or copy of i386 file. It would not pass WGA due to blocked VLK. I
purchased a new (never registered) retail full install disk containing XP Pro
w/SP2. I did a repair install, entered the new 5x5 Product Key, and activated
same. As far as I can determine, I am 100% legal. Machine passes all WGA
scans for Windows Updates, I was able to install Windows Defender, etc.
If I purchase a newer used laptop that has a larger HDD, more memory, faster
CPU, etc, CAN I TRANSFER MY XP PRO TO THE NEWER MACHINE? If yes, will I use
the same Product Key or does MS issue a new Product Key to avoid the "one
key, one machine" conflict? Is there any other MS website to go to for more
info about what steps to take to legally transfer the OS to a different
machine? (I've already checked the WGA FAQs and didn't see anything about how
to transfer - just a reiteration of one license, one machine.)
Thanks for any assistance.

- Windows XP Hardware >> trying to diagnose intermittent problemwinxp sp2
p4 2.8
asus motherboard
1 gig ddr ram
nvidia geforce4 mx 440
250 gig seagate hdd
Greetings
I have had a problem with my computer since I got it nearly 2 years
ago. I think it is some sort of device driver problem but i haven't
been able to diagnose it. I just did a fresh reinstall of winxp and
that hasn't fixed it
problem is VERY slow boot process then occasional spontaneous reboots
during the boot. if i just keep rebooting then eventually is starts and
everything is fine. it usually doesn't crash and can go for a few weeks
without needing a restart
i have all the latest drivers from manufactureres website
i have a tv card but the drivers aren't loaded and i don't use it
one problem i had this morning - i put a dvd in and it went to a stop
screen with "driver_irql_not_less_or_equal" and lower down "cdfs.sys"
but when i restarted it actually started first go (though again, very
slow boot process), and here i am using it with no problems. It
occasionally freezes using moviemaker 2 but doesn't crash the machine -
just have to restart moviemaker
I can always boot to safe mode. I can do everything i need to on this
machine without it crashing - i use paint shop pro, office 2003,
opera, other apps and the list goes on
i'm keen to try and diagnose this problem - sometimes i think it must
be graphics card, other times maybe motherboard problem
if someone can help me with where to start i would appreciate it as I
want to shut down sometimes but dread the start up process
many thanks

- Windows XP Hardware >> XP won't start with second hard driveWindows XP Home Edition
eMachines 1.0G Celeron
30Gb original boot drive
Have just installed a second (additional storage) hard
drive (Maxtor 120GB). Jumpers are properly set for
master/slave. The auto-detect BIOS seems to work fine and
properly identifies the new drive in BIOS setup. The
format/partitioning utilities that came with the drive
(boot-up from the CD)work just fine and report that the
drive is working fine. Testing, format, partitioning all
complete fine.
But XP will not start with the new drive connected. After
BIOS I get a quick logo screen then blanks out and then a
full page text message including the following:
"Were sorry....., Windows XP did not start successfully. A
recent hardware change might have caused this." THen
gives the following restart options (none of which work):
Start in Safe Mode
Start in Safe MOde with Networking
Start in Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Know Good Configuration
Start Windows normally
None of these options will work, and it repeats the boot
and returns to this message screen over and over. I have
never had a situation where Windows would not even start
in Safe mode. If I disconnect the new drive, I get this
message screen once more, but then XP will start normally.
If the BIOS is satisfied with the new drive why will XP
not start? If the disk utilities test and format it OK,
why won't XP go along? How can I help XP accept the new
drive if I cannot even start-up to work with it?
Thanks for any help.

- Windows XP Setup >> Print spooler failure at installationWhen I try and install an HP2300 printer on XP Home, using a digitally signed driver, the Print Spooler aborts the installation.

Windows XP Setup >> Fax
You don't move an application. You install it on the new machine by using
the installation media. If you don't have Winfax 10.02 it won't work with
Windows XP. Ver 10.02 was the first XP compatible version.
Ver 10.01 worked, but with problems.

- Windows XP Security >> restrict access to my documents on my user areaI have set myself up as admin on windows xp, but i thought this meant that other "limited" users could not access my files. At the moment if any user opens "my computer" they can view all of the files on every persons user account
Surely there must be a way of restricting this to admin only, so that limited users cannot access others documents or view them..
i thought maybe that under properties of my documents folder i could tick the "make this folder private box" which looks like what i was looking for, but it wont let me tick that box - it is watermarked out..
I am not a computer genius so any help would be appreciated. thanks.

- Windows XP Setup >> Why is any internet security I install killing my computer?I had a McAfee firewall and virus protection, when it expired I decided to
try a firewall and virus protection that my cable company for free. Upon
suggestions from my ISP I uninstalled all of my spy sweepers, virus scanners
and all of my McAfee Security. After installing the package that I downloaded
from my ISP my computer ran incredibly slow and froze up on me every time. I
uninstalled and added another 512 MB of RAM like my ISP recommend. Still
after the improvement to my computer the install from my cable company still
acted the same and froze my computer.
I gave up on the cable company and bought a Norton Internet Security 2006.
Once I installed NIS I ran into the same issues of slow starting and freezing
up again.
I have run the virus scan before installing NIS and removed any malware and
viruses that were there. I have also run a removal tool for McAfee, and
removed everything resembling a firewall, virus scanner, spy sweeper or
removal tool. I have deleted all of the programs from the 'add remove
programs' the program files on my C drive (one McAfee file I can't completely
delete) along with anything in my registries and anything that comes up when
I do a search for McAfee and Spy sweeper.
I have tapped out all of the tech support from Norton and my cable company,
and have tried everything I can think of.

- Windows XP Support >> Right click and "File" options not respondingHi there
When I right-click on a folder or file in Windows Explorer or use the File
menu option such as properties, nothing happens!
Right click options such as WinZip etc. work - but XP ones such as
properties and security / sharing do nothing!
Anyone any ideas what is going on here? I haven't loaded any software
recently - this just seemed to start happening. My Norton software is
up-to-date so I don't think it is a virus...
Really do not want to wipe my PC and have to start all over again....but if
this doesn't sort itself out then it looks like I might have to.
All help much appreciated

Every time I shut windows xp down, I have to do it
twice. I start the normal way, "start", "Shutdown",
then "shutdown" in the new window. I usually get a
snipet of the audio goodbye, then nothing happens. Then,
I repeat the routine, and it shuts down. Has anyone else
had this annoyance?
