- Windows XP Security >> security policyIs there any way to truly lock down a work group so that
it can't be merged into a domain?? Let me explain, I
have been getting hacked for the past few weeks and the
first thing this person does is to absorb my work group
into his bogus domain. It would seem that he is using
valid though possibly stolen credentials. I am unsure how
he is doing
this but it looks like he is some sort of admin and has
access to every tool possible. Once my WG has been
assimilated, I find that I have lost admin rights and
SYSTEM has free reign over my whole system. He also
applies a massive security policy that locks me down to
the point of not being able to install Word etc.
I have a small network for my business but don't feel I
need to go the domain route right now. Is the a small
pre-configured security policy any where that I can apply
after a clean install that would at least stop him from
hacking me through this method??

1)I have got a computer at home and office both having windowsXP,is there a
way to control them from eachother or not?(Both are connected to internet)
2)on my home computer I have created two users one administrator and the
other one a limitted user ,I don't want some services strat for the limitted
user and I want his session works fast cause he dosen't need services like
Sqlserver or Net running on his session

- Windows XP Network >> LAN difficulty between Windows 98 & XPI used the network setup wizard to connect a work group
using one XP, one ME, and 2 Windows 98 computers. XP
machine recognizes the individual shared resources and can
access them. Other computers do not show any available
computers or data in Network Places when XP machine is
on. When XP machine is turned off, the other machines
recognize each other and work normally in Network Places.
How do I configure the computers to allow all 4 to
participate fully in the network?

- Windows XP Support >> My picturesT he My pictures folder is an icon that looks like a small silver / light
grey suitcase. Every folder under it is also the same type of icon. there
are at least 20 folders. This doesn't seem right. I can't get rid of it
either. Every tine I attempt to modify the folder it crashes Windows
explorer. what am I doing wrong?

- Windows XP Support >> XP Program Shortcuts - Very SlowI set up some keyboard shortcuts for programs on the Programs menu of
my Start Menu (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-I for Internet Explorer).
The shortcuts work, but it takes ~30-60 seconds for the program to
start.
Any ideas why this would be?

- Windows XP Security >> Read only accountI want to provide my users access from home to an XP pro system via XP remote
service for the propuse of viewing our company's databases which is hosted on
a server and viewed via an application (client) on the XP system.
Question: Is it possible to create a user account that is a "Read Only"
account? I reviewed security policies and group policies but can't find the
items to enable this function. Even though we will be using strong
passwording, I do not want to allow outside users to create, change, print or
export anything (read only). [I am planning to restrict application access to
only those allowed]
Any suggentions?

- Windows XP >> Start button does not activateThe start button does not activate and I am unable to
access any of the items which are listed on the start
menu including shutdown. To shut down, I must use the
power button which creates a "system shutdown improperly"
error. Am I able to reach the shut down info through the
actual file rather than through the start menu? This is
a program error which I am trying to resolve. The system
operates okay in safe mode. My system restore feature is
not restoring anything. I want to possibly re=install
the program withhout reformatting the entire drive. Any
suggestions?

- Windows XP Security >> W32 spybot / scrgrd.exeI've been infected with the above virus scrgrd.exe, i've
searched around a few places to find a cure and most of
them involve opening task manager an registry editor.
Both of these will not open when logged on as a user and
i cant log on as administrator because i do not know the
password. I am running xp home edtion, is there a
default password for the administrator account? Also is
there anyway of getting the task manager / regedit to
open? The regedit errors saying another application is
currently using it.
Any help/advice or sites known where there are
explanations of how to get rid of this virus would be
appreciated.

- Windows XP >> V4 Window Update in XP ProWhen attempting to access Windows Update, the page which
directs you to update your Windows Update software is
displayed. Clicking "Windows XP" and "Driver Updates" on
the left side navigation results in the same page being
displayed, making it impossible to access the site.
Do you know any fix?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Windows Explorer - SlowI find that when I click on a file from windows explorer to open a file (any
type of file) it takes ages to open. I can sometimes wait up to 2 minutes.
If I go to the application first (ie word etc) and open the file - it opens
straight away.
I'm using Windows XP - latest patches 2.4GHz PC with 1GB memory.
Any ideas?

- Windows XP Setup >> USB port turned off in BIOSRecently I got a digital camera, Im having problems
viewing the pictures. My pc says the USB port is turned
off in the BIOS. Can anyone help explain how to turn this
on?!!!!
In the devices manager it says my USB's are enabled but
HELP says they are turned off in the BIOS.
A friend gave me my Pc with XP professional installed, he
got it from work so I dont have the user manual.
HELP says I must use the BIOS set up utility installed on
my PC.
I shall be most grateful for any advice offered.

- Windows XP Update >> Huge problem with windows update. Code 8000FFFFPlease help me someone. I can't update anymore and everytime I startup my
computer it says ""configuring updates". But I didn't install any. The last
one I did did something to my windows. I can't install games and programs. It
always says that my MSXML4.0 is not correctly installed. Or I have problems
with the side-by-side-configuration when I try to install something. It
totaly crashed up my System. I tried every antivirus programm and antispy
progs. I searched the hole web but I couldn't find anything. Its really bad
and I can't format my drive because I have not enouth space to save my files
and I really don't want to make everything new. My computer is just half a
month old. My System:
CPU: Intel QuadCore 6600 2.400 Mhz
Graphic card: Nvidia Geforce 8800
Ram: 2 GB DDR 2
Mainboard: Asus P5N32-E SLI
Vista Home Premium

- Windows XP Network >> Adding Domain Group to Local Administrator GroupHi,
I've a strange problem. I've got an NT4.0 domain and have
about 60+ WindowsXP Pc's to add to it. I've used Sysprep
to allow me to image all the PC's. When I boot-up one of
the Sysprepped XP PCs, I log on locally, and join the
domain, this works fine. I then reboot the PC and, again,
log on locally. Next, through the MMC Computer Management
snap-in, I go to Local Users and Groups, Groups, and then
into Administrators. I then click Add, then Advanced, and
click Find Now. This lists all the users and groups on
the domain. If I add a user it's fine, but if I add any
of the groups, it crashes the MMC. It accepts the group
into the list, but it crashes when you click OK to accept
it. I don't think it's anything to do with it having been
Sysprepped, as it also happens to a 'standard' built PC.
Any advice will be greatfully received!!!!

click back to go back and cancel to cancel. I have tried several different
bold days (points) to no avail. Any thoughts?

If your System Restore is not working properly then there is usually
no way to recover from this and preserve the old restore points.
The only thing you can do is to:
1. Shut off System Restore, at least for the affected drive.
2. Reboot the computer
3. Turn System Restore back on and create a new restore point.
All of the old restore data will be wiped out by doing this.
System Restore should be tested occasionally, and especially after
doing the above procedure.
To test that system restore is working properly do the following:
1. Create a new shortcut on the desktop (for anything).
2. Create a manual system restore point.
3. Delete the shortcut you created in step 1.
4. Reboot the computer.
5. Use system restore and choose the restore point you created in
step 2.
If this works then the shortcut will be back on the desktop.

- Windows XP Security >> PEAP Cached User Credentials and Support for TTLSHi, I have a question about WinXP cached user credentials
for PEAP authentication. I'm aware that there's a solution
of remove the cached credentials using regedit. But is
this something MS will change - i.e. not caching the
credentials? (Perhaps in SP2)
Also, will MS provide support for TTLS authentication for
WinXP and Win2000 in the near future?

- Windows XP Network >> NetworkingHello, smart world out there! I am trying to set up a wireless network in my
home. Do I need to do this AND set up a home network? I am confused, and
nothing I've tried yet works. I did set up a "network" that my own computer
acknowleges, but none of the other computers in my home appear to.
(Is there a way to delete this unneeded network if I do not need it?) Just
so you know, the computers in my house appear to all share the same internet
connection and printer already, but i also want them to be able to share
files (and hopefully to be able to link up via remote accress), and that does
not appear to be happening. Any wise advice would be sincerely appreciated -
and shared - play it forward!

I'm receiving the following error when selecting the "Windows Update" option
from the IE Tools menu:
[Error number: 0x80072F78]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you
are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the
problem.
None of the MS KB links that deal with this error have been of any
assistance. Note: I do use a proxy server (MSP 2.0).
I have managed to find a workaround:
1. Select the "Use administrator options" from the menu on the left of
the page
2. Select the "Windows Update Catalog" link within the "Update
Multiple Operating Systems" paragraph on the right
3. Select the "Windows Update" link from the menu on the left of the
page.
Alternatively, simply go to
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp
From here I can then scan for and pick updates to install.

am wishing to upgrade. For example, I want to upgrade my motherboard and

- Windows XP >> Can not browse computer in a different workgroupMy organisation a recently purchase a few new PC running
Win XP Home Edition. I had set configure to be a
different because there are over 80 PC connected to the
orginal Workgroup.
Lately I had encounter the following when I tried to
access the other workgroup.
"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out is you have
access permissions.
No more connections can be made to this remote computer
at this time because there are already as many connection
as the computer can accept."
I can access the computer is the workgroup if I search
for it in the Windows Explorer, ie the Permission should
not be an issue.

My ZoneAlarm notified me this morning that it was trying to access the
internet.
It is living in c:\windows\system32 folder. No idea how it got there.
Not a single hit on Google.

- Windows XP >> Sound is distortedI had a harddrive go bad. I replaced it, reinstalled widows XP home and the sound was distorted.
It starts out fine, then get worse until it is almost unrecognizable in draging out the words and sounds.
All the drivers are up to date. I reinstalled windows with no effect. It distorts whether playing a CD or
MP3'S. The start up sounds from widows are completly distorted. I ran a diagnostic check on the hardware and everything seems fine. It appears to be a software problem or the new harddrive is too slow, but then why does it start out working fine? Any ideas on where I go next?

- Windows XP >> sendtoxI realize this must have been covered before, but the site search engine is giving me little useful info. While i wander the Net looking for answers i keep running into contradictory oppinions/suggestions.
I just installed XP 1a in my new machine
Bottom line:
I'd like the "sendtox" option when I right-click a folder/file etc.
Is there a safe way to add that capability in XP?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> turning off Windows XP Home EditionI just had my computer in for service and everything was working fine until I
installed HP Printer, Scanner, Copier. I turned off AVG virus protection and
Windows firewall when installing. Now, when I go to shut down, my computer
brings up the windows box, saying it is " ending programs and saving
material". I have checked the task manager and there are no programs
running. I turned off the power to my new psc and it still happens. Once
or twice this box did not appear and when I went to restart my computer the
next day, it would freeze on me. When this happened, I have had to unplug
the power cord and wait until all power is gone. If anyone has any
information on this, I would love to hear it. I don't know why that box is
appearing and I don't know why my computer would freeze
