- Windows XP Support >> Problem with Play Videos in Web PagesUnable to play videos in web pages. When I go to Tools, Internet Options,
Multimedia there is not a check box to tick (or the actual heading) to Play
Videos in Web Pages. I have contacted HP Help by email, and have done all
they suggested to resolve the problem. They now recommend System restore.
Instead of doing System restore, If I UPGRADED from Windows XP to Vista would
it be likely that I would still have the same problem?

- Windows XP Network >> svchost error at logon and no network connections availableHi,
My laptop (Tosh Sat Pro 6100 1.8GHz/1Gb) has been running
perfectly until this morning. The machine has both a
firewall (Kerio) and is running up-to-date anti-virus
software (Norton 2002).
Prior to the "Welcome to Windows" display, a "svchost.exe
Application Error (instruction 0x57d43c16 referenced
memory at 0x00000001. The memory could not be written"
message is displayed.
I am unable to see any Network Connection icons anwhere.
The devices appear in the Device Manager and can be
configured but are unable to connect to a network.
I've checked that all services are configured properly
and have tried loading the latest drivers available
(which are the ones being used previously anyway ...)
I've also followed all relevant threads in the Microsoft
KB
I can't access any of my System Restore either ...
It seems weird to be accesing an address of 0x00000001.
Any advice would be GREATLY apppreciated.
Kind regards,
Cam

P.S. Got help from Brian, (Thanks B), and queried through the cmd prompt
whether WZC was active. I was returned the error 1060 and the message that
the specified service was not installed. Since I have re-installed the device
already and that has not solved the problem I am wondering where I might get
the softare to perform this function.
I have been on to Microsoft through their product support line and they are
willing to throw their opinion in at a cost of â?¬75 + VAT.
Is this the wall? or can I get over, under or around it?

When you boot into Safe Mode, you do not use your systems video adapter in
other than SVGA mode (basic Windows Video Driver).
I believe the same with your monitor. Do you have the old monitor still and
have you tried to hook it back up?
Have you tried to uninstall the Monitor under Control Panel | System |
Hardware | Device Manager (in Safe Mode), reboot and see if Windows tries to
detect the new hardware?
Did you get any software for your monitor that you needed to load ... and
if, so did you check if there where any updates on the Manufacturers
web-site (not Windows ... a lot of times there driver updates for hardware
manufacturers is out-of-date)?

customize >> Error loading my user profile (desktop setting)
I just noticed that each time I try to log on to my ,the
system throws up an error message saying that my
personalised settings (user profile) is either corrupt or
bad and can not be loaded. it then boots up with a fresh

When I logged in as an administrator and went to control
panel-system-advanced-user porfiles. I noticed that the
profiles attached to my sign on was having status as
backup while all other had local status. what can I do to
restore my desktop setting as I cherish it so much and
have personalised software running with it.
I run a window xp professional in a domian environment.
Please your help is needed urgently

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Synching musicI've got two live lip-sych performances that I'm making into a movie. To
enhance the sound quality, I'm overlaying the original music tracks on top of
the video. The first one worked extremely well, and I was able to synch up
the music track with the video. The second track however will not stay
aligned. I position the music track so that it is synched perfectly, but
upon playback, it's just a hair off every time. I already noticed that the
second track was not in the same format as the first (.wav), so I resaved it
in .wav format and that didn't help. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

This is the second time it has happened to me within a week of being on XP2.
I re-installed the first time. Before I re-install again I want to see if
anyone can help. Ran on XP1 for a year, no problems other than the normal
adware and spyware issues. I always was able to get my set of Accounts on the
Splash Screen.
Sceanario: Logged in fine, no issues worked all day, log out and turn
machine off properly. Next time I boot. I JUST GET THE SPLASHSCREEN. No
accts to login as.
Why does this happen?????
I tried Ctrl-Alt-Delete multiple times. No Help!
I tried restoring to last know "Good" configuration No Help!
I tried Safe Mode, same thing, just Splash Screen!!!!
I initially setup 4 accounts. Normally after a successful Login Spybot
always runs. Always fines the DSO Exploit only and is corrected. Ad-Ware
Personal SE doesn't run, nor any other adware / spyware software Norton 2003
is running auto protect enabled.

- Windows XP Security >> Where is the 2k/XP certificate store in the registry? To all-
PGP and other programs allow the app to be pointed to different locations
for the private key store, including a floppy/CD/USB token. Thus keeping
the private key off machine for added protection. If you want to decrypt a
PGP message, slip that USB token into the slot and startup the program.
It occurs to me that the very same thing could be done with EFS, *if*
a) the local machine/personal account store can be found
b) the registry can be changed to point to a different location.
Doing this would really enhance data protection on 2k/XP.
The weakness of EFS is , (2k) using a data recovery agent and unlocking the
private keys by a simple account log on; easy enough to hijack if physical
access can be gained.
If that can be changed by moving the certs off machine, then to access a
file, just slip that CD or USB token in to place, attempt to open, the
Registry says- "Look on E:\", it goes to E: and uses the private key there.
Does anyone know where in the Registry the local machine and personal
account certificates are stored and can it redirect cert location?
Thanks
Yours-
Ridge Cook
