- Windows XP >> HELP!!!! Can't get previosly removed NTFS drives recognised by XP again! Please somebody help...
I'm stillrunning Win XP Pro Corp w/SP1 on most of my machines but have
about 15 or so IDE Hard Drives ranging in size from 80Gig thru to 300Gb
that I removed for one reason or another, either when a system crashed
or to connect up directly to another XP Pro machine... and I now can't
get them to be recognised in Wndows Explorer on any XP or W2K system
and in device manager it just states that the drives are there but are
'unformatted' and offer to format the drives!
These are all Data drives with no operating system on them but have an
enormous amount of recorded digital tv data and photo's etc. on them
which I don't want to lose... like several Terrabytes worth... plus
numerous other downloaded programs etc. that were being stored on the
drives!
PLEASE!!!!!!! How can I get the NTFS partition to again be recognised
by Windows XP/SP1? I can't afford to lose that much data , and can't
afford to buy new hard drives to replace them all in order to use
recovery type software to transfer the data across to as I have
CFS/Fibro Mylagia which leaves me housebound in alot of constant pain
and only on a meager $11,000 (Australian Dollars - or approx. $7.500 US
Dollars) to cover everything including all my medical costs, which
includes paying for a carer 12 hours each day.
Is there any cheap way for me to get Windows XP Pro to again recognise
these drives that have a single NTFS partition on each of them and be
able tp use them again without reformatting and losing all my data?
Hoping for an answer...
Linton. (Downunder in Sydney, Australia)

- Windows XP Network >> XP PC can't read share on DOS PCHi
I have a fairly straightforward TCP/IP peer-to-peer network consisting of 6
x MS DOS 6.2 PCs, various Win9x, and a Win XP Pro machine.
Everything was running well until the introduction of the XP machine. The
XP machine simply cannot see shares on the DOS machines, even though they
are alive, well, and being read from / written to by other PCs on the same
network.
If I type NET VIEW from a DOS prompt in XP I am shown a list of the hosts
that it can see on the network, including those running DOS (they're called
CNC1 through CNC6 as it happens). I can't see them in My Network Places.
Drive C on CNC1 through CNC6 is shared without a username or password.
If I try to browse directly to 'c' on, say, CNC6, I get the following
errors:
If I use IP address: \\10.0.11.9\c --> "The network path cannot be found"
If I use host name: \\cnc6\c --> "The network resource type is not correct"
I can ping any of the DOS PCs from the XP machine - no problem there, so it
can't be a TCP/IP related issue.
Any ideas for help gratefully received, especially from those who have come
across this problem before and found a solution to it! MS support site is
no use to me today, I can't find anything relating to this on there.
Cheers

About a week ago, the program became erratic, so I removed it, and then
tried to reinstall a few days later.
I've been blocked from trying to download the program .. in essence, it says
it cannot run the NEW program because it is already functioning.
I have done numerous searches trying to locate another site, and I've

What am I missing in order to correct this program.
Can anyone offer any assistance with this?

- Windows XP Network >> Windows Explorer slow when not on office LANMy laptop PC is a member of my office domain, with some drive mappings
pointing to the office server shares. When I work at home, any activity
involving the file system (using Explorer or OpenFile and SaveAs dialogues)

because if I disable the home network connection, the problem is gone.
However, I need to be connected to the network at home. Is there a solution?

Have installed iTunes. When installing, gets to where it needs to start the
iPodServices.exe, but it always fails. This is not an Apple thing, cause the
exact same program installs perfectly on my laptop with same OS. On Install,
get a message "Cannot start service." (iPod). Have tried to manually start
it, but only runs for maybe a minute, then get the windows error message,
"iPodServices.exe encountered a problem and needs to shut down...." ..."do
you wish to send to MS???"
Have tried completely uninstalling, reinstalling, log in as Administrator,
etc. No luck.
Any ideas???
P.S. The iPodservices.exe is not even listed in Services.

I've tried rolling back the firmware and still can't connect. Now I've heard

you update the firmware. however I can still make changes to other programs
through my router. do you think this is a router problem. I am using xp pro

- Windows XP Network >> XP and Domain issueHere's my issue. I have some XP Pro boxes on my domain and
when I go to install the printer I can't browse the
server/directory for the printer. I can install the
printer via IP address but that's not how I initially had
it set up. The other issue is, if I want to make someone a
local admin to the machine I am unable to browse the
directory to add the person. Under location it will only
show the local machine and not my server. All the XP boxes
are doing this but the 2kPro boxes work just fine.
I've checked the knowledge base and it said that file and
print sharing needed to be installed. Uhhhhh.. yeah of
course :) Any other ideas? Oh yeah.. it also takes the XP
boxes forever to log on to the domain.
Much thanks in advance

Windows XP Setup >> Desktop Settings change at reboot
I've spent way too much time trying to figure this one out. No success with
seven Dell technicians, so maybe somebody here in the community has an idea.
My preference is to set my desktop settings thusly:
Themes: Windows Classic
Desktop: None
Screen Saver: None
Appearance: Windows Classic Style; Windows Standard (color scheme)
I apply these and every thing looks as I want...until I reboot the system.
When the system reloads, I've been able to pin down that the one thing that
changes is the "Windows and Buttons" drop down on the Appearance tab, which
now reads Windows XP Style. And it offers the default (blue) color scheme.
I've done some non-destructive testing in the system registry, but truly
don't know where to go from here. As I said above, 4.5 hours on the phone
with DellTechs bought me little more than cauliflower ear. Anybody have any
thoughts on how to resolve this? I'm truly appreciative of your support.

- Windows XP >> Windows XP Pro and High screen resolutionI have a new notebook with OEM Windows XP Pro. It is a
fantastic computer and XP works beautifully. The display
resolution defaults to 1920 X 1200 and the image is
great. Setting it at lower resolutions tends to make the
image fuzzy which is inherent in LCD screens, I
understand. I have set the DPI to 170% (173 DPI) and the
font is set to normal.
I understand that with higher resolutions, the pop ups
are smaller. Is there no way that XP can be tweaked to
give similar sized pop-ups as with 800X600 resolution?
For instance, the balloons with the animated "paperclip"
are very small with WORD and other Office programs. When
I type in a question in the help, it is very difficult to
read - very small.
I want to continue using the higher resolution - the
images are great and the print is very sharp. However, I
would think that XP would have a way to resolve the
variations in resolutions available now-a-days??
Any help and guidance will be most appreciated.
Norm.

- Windows XP Security >> Critical UpdatesI just noticed 9 Critical Updates for Win XP. If I am not mistaken, the total
is about 8MB. Why does MS 'lump' all their downloads for download at one
time? For those of us with 'dial-up,' it really is time consuming and a chore
to download these Critical Updates. Isn't there the slightest possibility
that MS could spread these downloads out, so they are not all 'lumped'
together for one download? Or doesn't MS consider that there are those of us
who are using 'dial-up' services?
Just my thoughts.

- Windows XP Network >> How set permissions for ONE other PC?I'm using WinXP-pro, and need to share my entire folder (George Jones) on
PC"George" to allow PC"Family" to fully access it.
It's a small network, behind a firewall DSL router. (I don't think security
is a big issue, but would like to know if it is.) Could someone help with
setting permissions. I'm almost there, here's what was done so far:
1) Control Panel > Folder Options > View > [Disabled] simple file sharing.
(This causes a security tab to appear in next step...)
2) Windows Explorer > rt clicked on folder c:\George Jones > Properites >
Security > Add...
Here's where problem comes in... I try to add the PC named "Family" but it
says "object not found". I can add "Everyone" and this DOES WORK, but I
don't want...it's way too opened up.
I tried Advanced > Find Now > (it lists lots of "George" things but nothing
else...no FAMILY in the list.
What am I doing wrong?
3) To complete the sharing, do I need to ALSO do...
Windows Explorer > rt click on folder c:\George Jones > Properites >
SHARING > (o) Share this folder?
Thanks,
George

- Windows XP >> Variation on the Picture and Fax Viewer problemsHello,
I have a user who has software that uses Companion Software's Metafile
Companion (MC) as a bridge to Office apps. So, he needs to associate
.emf files with MC. However, he does not want to disable the Picture
and Fax Viewer (PFV) as he uses it for many other formats. We have
right clicked, gone to "open with", changed it to MC, and selected the
"always use" option. Voila, the program opens in MC. The icon is MC,
and subsequent double clicks or Opens use MC. However, if you right
click, and go to Open With, it is back to the PFV with "Always use"
checked. And, his software app still tries to use PFV.
I have not done the Start/Run "regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll" as he still
wants PFV for other types. I have tried solution 1 from here:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-201
But no luck.
Is the a specific sequence of associations/registry tweaks/reboots
that will keep PFV but associate .emfs to MC?
Thanks in advance.
