- Windows XP >> XP Home Licensing QuestionI bought a Compaq system preloaded with Windows XP Home. The system is out
of warranty, and has a bad motherboard. It's easier to buy a new board and
processor than have Compaq replace the old board.
Here's my question. I have a non-useable system I am gutting to make a new
one. I purchased an XP Home license with the Compaq device but all's I got
is a restore CD. I believe I have legally purchased a license and should be
able to transfer to another pc.
How have people handled this?

- Windows XP >> Info on troubleshooting a driver problemHi folks
I have a problem with running the Sims 1 game on a Windows XP Pro SP2
machine. I do not play this game often so I don't know when the
problem first appeared. From the looks of it, it seems as if it could
be a conflict between a display driver and the Sims game.
The game is fine until I go to the mode where I can build something on
a property (when switching to this mode the display normally changes
from showing a map to showing a property close up, with a menu on the
bottom). Instead of showing a coherent picture the screen displays
pieces of the whole, with some blank or blank squares randomly placed
on the screen.
No other applications are running on the computer when this happens.
A couple of questions I would like to ask troubleshooting this type of
issues:
1. Is there a utility that can help me to find out if a dll or a
driver has been loaded into a memory address used by another dll or
driver?
2. Does anyone know of any good books that would give more info about
troubleshooting driver/dll conflicts?
thanks,
JJ

- Windows XP >> Windows Explorer and Send To problemsI have 3 problems that I just cannot seem to find any info
on how to fix them. I have had them for quite some time.
The first 2 are a real pain in the rear!! Please help!!
(1) A few seconds to a minute or two after I open My
Computer or Windows Explorer, my desktop icons and system
tray icons disappear for a few seconds. The desktop icons
re-appear ok but only 2 or 3 of the system tray icons
re-appear. The only way I know to fix this is either reboot
or log off and back on.
(2) If I am in Windows Explorer (not My Computer) and I
double-click on a drive in the right pane it opens it in a
new window even though I have it set to open in 1 window.
This isn't a problem in My Computer.
(3) My Send To menu is not sorted by name in the context
menu.
Thanks!

- Windows XP >> Quick Launch toolbar won't stayOn a home edition XP2 system with current updates, my quick launch toolbar
setting disappears with each reboot.
I have reset it through the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties function.
I have set it by right clicking on the quick launch space and selecting
'quick launch'.
I have gone into 'Documents and Settings\ \Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch' to make sure that the 'quick
launch' folder exists.
But it still reverts to not being selected each time I reboot.
Would appreciate some help on this one. Thank you.

- Windows XP Support >> Help with STOP Error: 0x0000008EXP SP2 on a Toshiba Tablet. Nothing added in 4+ yrs (just all software
updates) but have increasing blue screen issue.
After quite a bit of researching, I have gone through all the possible - and
known - causes of this stop error, which now occurs within 8-10 minutes of
every bootup unless in safe mode. I have determined that the memory address
where the errors always occur is: 0x805A1F33. Now how do I find out what
driver is located at that address so I can fix the problem?
Thank you for your assistance!

- Windows XP >> New XP Security UpdatesI recently installed the 823559 & 817606 Security updates
realeased by M$ and immediately after installation noticed
that my hard drive or something began clicking every few
seconds. I restarted the machine several times to no
avail and eventually decided to rollback the machine to
before the updates. NOTE - before installing any M$
updates I always make a restore point now. After I rolled
back the machine the problem stopped.
My question>? Does anybody have any idea exactly what
these updates are SUPPOSED to do and why they might affect
my hard drive?

Windows XP Support >> Internet Explorer can't find any pages?
I've just installed XP and SP2 and all the updates. I have a Broadband
connection and downloaded the latest drivers. I can connect to my ISP and
log on to my home page but only once when I open IE but it can't find any
pages nor will it open the search page after the initial page. I've emptied
the cache and refresh doesn't work. My ISP has checked all my settings and
they are OK. The firewall did ask me about a few files ootuqq.exe,
pingppac.exe and winmgr but it still wont find pages whether or not I block
these. Funny thing is if I ping from the command screen I get replies so it
seems I am connected to my ISP server OK. Anyone any ideas or should I stick
with W2K Pro.? I'm sending this on a different computer if anyone wonders
how I can post messages and yet IE doesn't work.
Thanks
Tony

the netsh command in SP2 can rebuild your Winsock. Open the command prompt and type: netsh winsock reset , then press ENTER.

- Windows XP Network >> Can't access shared foldersHi there,
I've had an ongoing problem with sharing files on my laptop for some time
now.
Essentially what happens is when I connect my laptop to a network but
computer is can be seen on the network workgroup but when I click on it (on
someone else's computer) I get asked for an ID and PASSWORD.
This is not normal. When I click on other people's computers I get immediate
access to their shared resources. No one, however, can access my shared
resources.
Even if I type in my username and password it doesn't accept that when
trying to access my shared resources from another computer.
I am not sure what I can change or remove in order to permit others to
access my computer on a LAN.
FYI - I am proficient and experienced on windows and networking etc. Just
can't seem to figure this one issue out though.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jonathan

- Windows XP Hardware >> Success recovering corrupted HD hard drive (NTFS)FWIW I managed to destroy the file structure on an NTFS 300GB drive -
perhaps by accidentally unplugging the USB cable to the external box.
The drive was nearly full, including a video project that was in work.
I bought FinalDataPlus 2.0 after messing with the demo. In its most
aggressive mode it took something like 24 hours to scan the disk, and
while it reported finding a bunch of files and "recovered" some of
them, only the smallest ended up being valid files. I then started a
different scan mode and it went faster and found more files (including
the important many-GB files I needed) but again the recovered files
were corrupt.
My second try was Restorer2000. The free demo scanned the drive in an
hour or so and listed most of the files. Like FinalData the demo only
allows recovery of tiny files and thus isn't much of a test, but I
sprang for a paid copy. Nice to report, 100% success so far. All the
recovered files actually are correct.
Another plus was that after downloading the paid version (more than
just a key I could plug into the demo) and thinking I'd have to start
over with the drive scan, when I opened it, it had inhierited all the
information about the drive that the demo had extracted, so I was
ready to recover. Fingers crossed, of course. Unless I don't know
where the button is, when you exit FinalData after having scanned a
drive for 24 hours, whatever you learned disappears.

- Windows XP Hardware >> How do I know which disk drive it is based on Windows' event logs?Example: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk3\D during a

Is this labelling based on the order in My Computer's Manage -> Disk

Windows label disk drives. I do have three physical HDDs with seven
total drives/partitions (C: to I:) + two CD/DVD drives (M: and N:).
Thank you in advance. :)

- Windows XP Support >> Double Toolbars on TaskbarSome of the computers at the lab I'm employed at have a double application
toolbar on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. (If I have Internet
Explorer open then there are two instances of that single window on the
taskbar) Out of around 200 computers about 50 of them have this problem. It
would appear to be done at random too because there will be a group of
identical computers with the same 'image' of windows on each, but within a
few days some of them have it and some do not. I have done some searching
and have found that other people have the same problem, but have found no
solution to it. Most of the computers are on 'Power users' group, but the
computer I took the screenshot from is an administrator account. I can solve
the problem temporarily by using task manager to shutdown explorer.exe and
then again to enable explorer.exe. I suspect the language bar may have
something to do with it, but I'm not sure how. (If at all) I would greatly
appreciate some help in fining the source of the problem and devising a
solution. Thank you.
