- Windows XP >> cleanmgr doesn't do anythingWhenever I run windows disk cleanup it starts up and then says that it is
working and very well appears to be working, but never does anything.
I've tried stopping other programs first and there's plenty of memory or at
least I've never had a problem before.
When I look at task manager the program is responding and it says that
"cleanmgr.exe" is running 96% of the CPU and varying +/- 3 points.
I've let it go overnight but it never finishes.
If anyone could help me out w/ hints or suggestions it would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

It was currently on a domain vil-aid1 so i changed it to the workgroup
by click just below on workgroup and typed in the workgroup name
WORKGROUP. It asked me for my username and password so i entered these

After the restart when windows loads up I cannot log on it says my
username and password are incorrect or bad. Any help? Please?

- Windows XP >> wireless printingI have a "lexmark x75 all in one" on a wired/wireless home network, XP pro on
all computers. The printer is connected by USB to a dell desktop and it
prints fine on the dell, I have it shared as a network printer. I have a
wireless notebook, and I did a search for network printers and installed the
printer on the notebook. When I print from the notebook the printer engages,
"printer heads/cartriges slide across to get ready", but the documents never
actually print they just get stuck in the que. When I delete the docs they
say deleting but never actually delete, and this hangs the printer and the
Dell so I
can't print from the dell. When I reboot the dell, the document that I
deleted from the notebook prints. I have 1 gig on mem on the dell. Anyone
got an idea. I tried changing channels on the wireless router in case it
might be interference, and I tried downloading the latest drivers. Wish I
had another printer to try. It used to print before.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> windows updated error code.I have tried everything I can think of. I got some
virus's and removed them. I can't update with windows
update. The program starts and when you click scan it
gives an error message. It is 0x800c0005. I looked at
m/s tech support and found 3 problems with this code but
none of them have to do with or fix the error code. I
know how important keeping window xp up to date. I don't
want to reformat if I don't have to. Also aol does not
connect. I think it has to do with the same problem and
as usual aol has out sourced the t/s to India and they
for over an hr went through their script with no
answers...
as with everyone, the faster the better.. I sent e-mail
to M/S and as usual have not heard from them

- Windows XP >> HELP. URGENT! Atten. Bruce ChambersMy Problem was:
My computer will boot up, will show the desktop and all programmes but will
not respond AT ALL to any clicks on the desktop icons. It will show option
to shut down and will do so.
I booted up three times and shut it down three times, but the fault
persists.
Which way do I correct this fault?
The suggestion from Jim Macklin was:
EXE and LNK Fix for Windows XP - Line 12
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
I downloaded the fix, saved it on the Hard Disk, found the file (exefix) and
opened it, but where do I go from here?
I posted this question for the attention of Jim, but he did not reply
(probably did not see it), so could you help?
How do I get the computer to respond, so that I could implement Jim's and
yours suggestions. I am using my very old standby PC to post this.

- Windows XP Network >> IPSec Components locked in XP Home Edition?Hi all,
I'm having problems connecting to Sonicwall VPNs using Sonicwall's VPN
Client from a XP HOME ED PC. Btw, I have NO problems from my XP Pro PC.
I have the latest VPN client software (ver 3.1.556 and even tried the beta 4
which I rolled back from) so that is not the issue. Both PCs are at the
same location where the XP Pro is successful and the XP Home is not.
I called Sonicwall and after 1+ hour they said that I should contact MS to
find out how to unlock IPSec Components that are locked in XP Home Edition.
Please help!
Thanks,

- Windows XP Security >> Files Having No Owner, Access DeniedI have several files stuck (i.e. "Access denied") on my
machine after restoring to an older state.
Apparently the MS Knowledge Base article # 810881 is
describing the issue correctly, but its solution does not
work for me, because I have No "Use Simple File Sharing"
field in the Folder Options and "No Security Tab" under
right-clicking on file -> Properties either.
CACLS, from command-window, does not work on these files,
while it is working on other system files.
?= What other way could I assign or change the owner for
files having no owner?
?= Or how can I delete them without adding owner?

Windows XP Support >> Constant memory usage during shut down.
While shutting down program not responding cause of memory usage. I look at
the event log and find 3 errorsand warnings.
1)Dhcp not able to renew address network address.
2)Attempt to power off Brew failed.
3)Service Control Manager system - start drivers failed to load Cdr_xp.
What is going on? I tried to go step by step according to discussion group
problem solutions. While doing so deleting cookies, history and such, deleting
history computor ran for many hours, after which I tried overnight still
running this morning.
Does this system need to be reinstalled?

Windows XP Support >> Constant memory usage during shut down.
There's a better way to post Event Viewer Error reports!
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.
Is this the Brew you are referring to?
http://brew.qualcomm.com/brew/en/
How much RAM memory does your computer have?
Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?
You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Hope this helps.

Windows XP Support >> Constant memory usage during shut down.
What is your version of Ad-Aware? Do you have all the latest programme
updates as distinguished from Definition Updates?
What version of Norton do you have. When does your subscription expire.
Both these programmes are extremely heavy on memory usage. Your peak
from Task Manager is more than your installed memory so the system has
been using the pagefile. You need to check to see how frequently this is
occurring.
Did you check the system log in Event Viewer for Errors and Warnings?
The Error Report you posted is the result of the system being stressed
and does not identify a cause.

Windows XP Support >> Constant memory usage during shut down.
I wrote yesterday but it looks as if it didn't make the posting.
What I said was I have the lastest free Adaware 2007 def ver 0071.0000 and
the last scan was 4/18/08.
Also I have ATT online protection Norton ver 2.5.1 2007.11.19.01
I was for a time without virus protection. What is pagefile? I will try to
find info about it.
The memory usage is greater than it was yesterday. I see the red light on my
desktop flash every second and it is timed with the refresh rate in memory
usage.

Windows XP Support >> Constant memory usage during shut down.
Ron
I feel that a significant part of your problem may be coming from your
ATT online protection Norton.
http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=1409
As I understand it this is an ATT branded version of Norton. In these
newsgroups Norton has the reputation for being a resource hog. Those who
have removed Norton and replaced it with other freeware alternatives
have noticed a significant increase in performance with no loss of
protection.
Ad-Aware 2007 had a memory usage problem when first released but
Lavasoft have subsequently issued an update, which they claim has fixed
the problem. I have the same version on my computer and have not noticed
any problem. However, I only use Ad-Aware for periodic scans to back up
scans by Spybot S & D, which also runs and provides real time
protection.
The difference with Norton is that it is running all the time with a
constant heavy demand on resources. My anti-virus is only noticeable at
boot time when it updates definitions and does a full scan. The
protection at other times is not noticeable except when it has to
intercept an attempt by malware to gain access to the computer.
I am a little puzzled by reference to shutdown. This suggestion may
help. Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

I would not bother over much about the red light flashing. I enclose a

Windows XP Support >> Constant memory usage during shut down.
Thanks Gerry
I uninstalled Adaware 2007. Will try in a few days to reinstall it if system
runs better. I think your right about Norton because I see the system scaning
or searching at startup and things run slowly for a while and it's irrating
due to delays. I will check out your links and get back with you in a few
days if you don't mind?
I will also check out the price of memory this weekend!
Just a side bar. Really good show tonight on PBS called STRANGE DAYS on
Planet Earth done by National Geographic. The second show also by NG I
believe it was called Dirty Secrets. I hope this isn't against protical to
mention this? For these two shows I would risk getting banned!
Thanks again for the help

- Windows XP Security >> installing latest Critical update on Windows XPI just went to the update section and was told to
download the update to add a registry key to I believe
disable the adodb.stream so my computer would be safe
from a possible outside control of my computer. Here is
the introductory research that Im pasting here to
describe why this download is deemed necesary. Im quite
sure other users of XP have also received this and prob
is ok or else the update would not have been recommended
but here it is for someone to give me some much needed
help before I download it!!!
An ADO stream object represents a file in memory. The
stream object contains several methods for reading and
writing binary files and text files. When this by-design
functionality is combined with known security
vulnerabilities in Microsoft Internet Explorer, an
Internet Web site could execute script from the Local
Machine zone. This behavior occurs because the
ADODB.Stream object permits access to the hard disk when
the ADODB.Stream object is hosted in Internet Explorer.
Here is more information:
MORE INFORMATION
Any line-of-business Web application that requires a file
to be loaded or to be saved to the hard disk may use the
ADODB.Stream object in Internet Explorer. For example, if
an intranet server hosts a form that an employee must
download and fill out, the ADODB.Stream object is used to
obtain the file and to save the file locally. After the
user edits the file locally and submits the file back to
the server, the ADODB.Stream object is used to read the
file from the local hard disk and to send the file back
to the server. We strongly recommend that you use
different methods to provide this functionality. For
example, you may use an application or a control that
requires the user to deliberately access the hard disk.
Now I dont know if the above paragraph applies to me
since Im not a business but the last thing the article
said was this:
After you apply the update, you will receive the
following error message when you try to use an ADO stream
object from an HTML page in Internet Explorer:
ActiveX component can't create object: 'ADODB.Stream'
If you are running an application in a corporate intranet
environment, and the corporate intranet environment
currently uses the ADODB.Stream object with Internet
Explorer, applying this update may cause the application
to break. To restore application functionality, Microsoft
recommends that you first set your Internet Explorer
browser security level to High, and then you must clear
the compatibility flag of the ADODB.Stream object. Now Im
not running an app in a corporate environment but my
question is if I do the download will I have trouble
using an ADO Stream object from certain HTML pages or
will I not have to worry about this. In other words will
I have any aggravation from any disabling features not
being able to use my computer to its full extent because
I certainly do not want any error messages to come up!!!
I dont pretend to understand most of this so I hope
someone can explain it to me and let me know if I can
download the update without fear of losing any
functionality on the computer especially when viewing
certain web pages. I trust someone understands all of
this and can help me as soon as possible. Thank you very
much!!!!

- Windows XP Network >> Internet connectivity with two adapters...Here is a copy of the problem I'm having quoted from another forum:
"Weirder FTP problems...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, I'm using the latest version of Bulletproof FTP Server to host a small
FTP site for clients to upload things to us, but I cannot seem to get it to
work. I have installed BPFTP Server on a computer on my network with the

to the computer hosting the FTP...the router is then connected to our cable
modem which has a static IP address. Whenever someone tries to connect(or
even if I try to connect locally) the server gives me the following messages:

On the client side it's just saying that the connection is timing out.
Anyone have a clue?
Thanks,

This reply I made is the important one for you folks here:
"Okay, well I figured out what was causing the problem. I have two ethernet
adapters installed, both have internet access, but one cannot have the
necessary ports forwarded to it due to the way the network is constructed. I
disabled that network, and all of my ftp problems have gone away, but now I
can't connect to my other network...which is just as important. Is there any
way to disable internet access from going through that adapter, while leaving
the rest of my network connectivity intact?"
Do you guys here have any ideas as far as how I should configure this
computer to gain internet access only through the adapter I choose?

- Windows XP Setup >> MSN groupsHi all! I need help with my animations in my msn groups. I have been
having problems with posting an animated image. When I insert one into a
message box at any of my msn groups.....my image on my screen is not moving.
My group can see it moving, but on my computer it is just still. For
example, a dancing frog.
My group can see the frog dancing, but in my window...it is just standing
there? I do not have this problem in Outlook Express, or Yahoo, my
animations work perfectly in those accounts. I have asked MSN tech support
for help on this, and they have instructed me to "Empty temp internet
files" enable cookies, clean my disc hard drive. I have done all of that
and still have the issue. I also defrag on a regular baisis. I am
getting no where with msn tech support, they keep telling me the same thing
over and over. Any help would be appreciated. I am running Windows XP
prof.
Sincerely,
Donna

- Windows XP Network >> I'm Depressed - Linksys Router | Cable Modem | Power CutUp until yesterday morning I was happy. My broadband host machine was
feeding my win98se machine downstairs for internet & files.
Then we had a powercut and it messed up the network for some reason and I'm
not clever enough to set it back up again (and the tech support at Linksys
are CERTAINLY not clever enough - they can barely speak English never mind
fix my network).
When I connect the modem direct to the computer I can connect to the
internet fine. But I cannot connect to the internet when I use my router.
All wires are plugged in correctly, everything on the hardware side of
things is fine but it just won't let me online and it won't connect to the
other computer.
The problem seems to be centred around the "network connections" page in
Control Panel. Currently, when I right-click/properties the LAN item,
everything seems fine and TCP/IP properties is set to "obtain IP
automatically"
However, that is without the router connected. When I connect the route and
run the network wizard a "network bridge" item is placed in the "network
connections" page and then when I right-click/properties on the LAN, I don't
see the menu which includes the TCP/IP option, I just see some text telling
me that "this adapter is connected to the network bridge" or something like
that.
I am seriously depressed now. I've spent maybe 3 hours on the phone to
linksys tech support IN THE PHILLIPINES and I have no idea how much that is
gonna cost me on the phone bill!! They don't know what they are doing. All
they do is tell me turn the computer off, turn modem off, turn back on check
IP address then do the same again standing on 1 leg.
Any help would be great. Why would the power cut interrupt my network
settings? It was fine yesterday before the powercut. grrrrr.
thanks
Mark
